This year I decided to finally expand my ink collection beyond black, blue and grey. What followed was a completely new appreciation for the variety of colours and characteristics in fountain pen inks! In this video I'll show you my favourite inks I've tried in 2023. The intro/backstory turned out rather long 😅 - skip to around 3:30 if you're just here for the swatching. Also, I forgot to mention, but the order is based on colours - I didn't rank the 7 inks I picked. Let me know your favourite ink of 2023 in the comments!

I like the "weird" colors - olive instead of grass green as an example... So that Moss park is more up my alley than the leaf green.

I get what you mean! There are so many unusual shades and hues to explore, fountain pen inks have really surprised me with that.

Hi Ru, I also love Early Grey Tea, I have not used it yet, so I probably can't say I love it hahah! But I do love how it looks on my swatch. Leaf Green is gorgeous in the swatch, but it's probably too dark for me if I used it in my pens -- but knowing that finer/drier nibs write on the lighter side of the ink anyways might help soften the saturation of Leaf Green. I always collect teals and turquoises...and Eau de Nil has been on my radar recently. I may need to add that to my collection of Teals/Turquoises!

Hi Lao! I think the Leaf Green might surprise you in a finer/drier nib. It does have some darker shading but the brighter/lighter tones come out really well. :)

My current fave is from Journal This in the Pinked colour. Second is Birmingham Pen Co Sandstone.

I really enjoy Diamine Ancient Copper too. I also like their Eau de Nil, but it’s a bit too light to be a favorite. I like two inks in the Monteverde Sweet Life series, Iced Cookie, and for a much darker shade of turquoise/teal, Blue Velvet Cake. There are also some lovely inks in this color range in Pilot’s Iroshizuku line. For greens, I tend to like dark ones that are not too blue. Diamine Green Black is a favorite, and for a more foresty color, Monteverde Green. I think you might like a lighter, more olive-leaning shade with some red sheen, Pilot Iroshizuku Tokiwa Matsu. I like Aurora Black too. Lately my two everyday blacks have been Sailor Black (not the pigmented one) if I don’t care about it being waterproof. It’s silky smooth and a rich black. If I do want a waterproof black, I use Platinum Carbon Black.

Thank you for sharing some of your favourites, Catherine! The Monteverde Iced Cookie looks very pretty, as does the Blue Velvet Cake. And you're right about me liking Tokiwa-matsu, that was actually the first green ink I ever purchased 😊

How wonderful that you were able to find a path back to fountain pens! I love your selection, and am partial to greens as well. I discovered fountain pens in 1995 when a coworker, who was also left handed, was using a deep blue Lamy Safari. I was hooked and 30 years later they still give me great pleasure. I hope you don’t mind some unsolicited advice. You seem to love colour and are sensitive to the shades of various inks. So don’t let the grade school experience limit you from trying broader nibs. They really bring out shading and other colour nuances that don’t show with finer nibs. I started with extra-fine nibs but now prefer broader nibs, because they showcase the ink so beautifully. I think you might enjoy those subtleties too.

Thank you for your comment! I loved reading how you got hooked on fountain pens by seeing your coworker writing with one. And I don't mind the unsolicited advice at all, I'm glad you took the time to write it 😊 I want to start writing with broader nibs more, as I'm often a little disappointed with the limited range of shades my extra fines showcase when compared to the big swatches. However, for my daily journaling and to-do lists I like to stick to the 3.7mm grid of my planners, so I'm still thinking about when I could use the broader nibs. Maybe they'd be nice for headers or quotes, sprinkled in amongst the smaller handwriting.

Hi! I'm one of the new subscribers. Glad to have found you =) I cleaned and put away all my fountain pens at the end of 2014 and have recently been thinking about getting back to it. But my favourite inks, back in the day, was Waterman Havana Brown (replaced by Absolute Brown), Edelstein Amber and a Sage/Moss/Olive green that I can't remember now. I am mostly into vintage pens, but have some new ones. My oldest pen is a silver floral Mabie Todd Swan from 1920 (or slightly before that) and a few from the 1940s and 50s.

Thank you for watching and subscribing! Those inks sound beautiful, and they make for a nice colour palette together as well. A bit like my living room colours, now that I think of it! I know very little about vintage pens, so I had to google the Mabie Todd Swan. Very cool! And that's over a 100 years old - such a crazy idea. It's really a treasure from the past. 😊

New here and fellow Europe-based pen-paper-ink obsessed neighbor! Really enjoyed your picks, and I totally identify with the difficulty in finding ink samples and certain brands. Fountainfeder is where I get my samples, maybe that’s the shop in Germany that you mentioned! Have you found any others?

So, i am lefthanded, i grew thinking we had to search for "special pens" BUT THATS NOT TRUE. Our hands are equal, right-handed turn the paper some degree in order to write, WE CAN DO IT TOO BUT SYMETRICAL. I am tired of hearing people saying left handed people need special things... what we need is someone who teach us how to write correctky from the begining. I worked in order to learn how to write as a left-handed, thinking that our hands are symetrical and fuck, i got it. No need to buy any special ink, pen, nib, or whatever. Just learn to write properly

I agree, I'm a little disappointed that almost every teacher in primary school told me that it's only natural for me to smudge my ink because "that's what left-handed people do". I'm glad to read that you found a way of writing that works for you, too!

@@ruonpaper Yes!! That's it, it takes so much effort now to change your handwriting after a whole life writing the way they told me, but trust me, it is worth the effort of changing it
