These notebooks make wonderful handmade gifts for journalers, writers, and artists. Whether you are new or experienced, I hope this tutorial is helpful and leaves you more curious about bookbinding. Leave a comment if you have a simple bookbinding technique to share!
If you already know pamphlet stitch, skip ahead to see the variations.
Tools used
✦ curved needles, AKA upholstery needles, mattress needles (get the right size for your thread, straight needles work too)
✦ cutting mat
✦ awl (alternatives: pin or thumbtack)
✦ bone folder (alternatives: back of spoon, popsicle stick)
✦ scissors
✦ box cutter
✦ metal ruler
✦ corner rounder (model: Akiles Diamond-1)
Materials used
✦ waxed linen thread (alternatives: embroidery floss, beading thread, cotton twine, ribbon. these work for 1 to 2 signature binding, but waxed thread is ideal for multi-signature binding. sewing thread is too fine.)
✦ 24 lb 90 gsm smooth writing paper (dot grid is printed on my laser printer)
✦ 80 lb cardstock
✦ papyrus paper
✦ mulberry/kozo paper
Sorry, I can't recommend suppliers for tools and materials.

I have taught myself the 3- and 5-hole pamphlet stitches which I use all the time. However, the stitches that look like like a chain intrigue me and I’m going to try that style tomorrow! I’m glad I found your series; I’ve only watched four videos and have already learned so much, thank you!

Oh Chanel I always flub up my stitching no matter which one i try. I have never seen the chain stitch before today. Now I know I can stitch a book together. I'm so excited. I always use the elastic band type of binding. Using clear stretchy jewelry elastic is how I did it. Well sometimes I used my sewing machine and put a few stitches on top middle and bottom of the signatures. So thank you for this tutorial. It has helped me immensely.

I love your work, your channel, and I eagerly look forward to your book! Thank you for being so transparent through your process. It's wonderful that you have tutorial videos now. I've been amateur bookbinding for ten years, and I really need some stitching instruction. My skill needs a definite upgrade. I think I've gotten into bad habits that affect my finished product, and it's very frustrating. I make a lot of mistakes, and my books are always wonky in some respect. I kinda just decided to quit because I get so upset at the end of a project. BUT I watched your video and revisited this stitch. Thanks again for sharing your process with us.

If you would do more signatures do you do them as a block or cut the signatures individually? Big hug love your mediatie bind with me in the background! Learn so much! I love that cover that looks like tree bark. 😁😁 I have so many pads of 12x12 scrapbooking paper, and I know I got some basic supplies for making simple "junk journals" using an awl, etc, but due to life happening (my father passing, and inspections for low-income housing, for example), things have gotten separated in a not-so-mindful way. 😖🙄 Let's just say I've put it out there to the Universe that I need a house -- not apartment -- for my creative needs and desires to be met.😂 😅
