This is a bit if a long one guys, its a deep dive and how I fertilise all of my tanks and my specific approach to each, im going to talk about brands, all in ones, individual dosing, lean dosing, EI dosing and everything in between, im in no way claiming to known the answers this is purely my experience with planted tanks and how to effectively fertilise them to ensure more plant growth and less algae!

This was really helpful. I've kept my fertilizing really simple but have started wondering about a little addition to my usual. I love how you present so thoughtfully but not overly confident, allowing for the unknown :) Your scapes are beautiful, I especially loved the one that you say has not been trimmed at all. You are a treasure 🙏

Your tanks are excellent art. I have 2 planted tanks which I started with potting soil. Nature is about competition. I also have Saltwater tanks, the ultimate in competition. Algae is the basis of all life in the aquatic realms. Simplicity is best.

A good substrate and good maintenance is the key... I've used several brands of liquid fertilizers, and I didn't see much differences between them... for long term, I've finished using a bit of micros and iron (tropica for example, it's reasonably afordable), and DIY NPK, Ca and Mg fertilizer using salts... inyected by a syringe directly to several spots in the substrate once a week after the water change... no need of capsules and thanks to ion exchange capacity, enriching the substrate (lasting for many years) and restricting fertilizer in the water column in order to avoid algae... I've used this method for years and I think it's one of the easiest way to achieve a reasonably pertentage of success. Regards

Sounds like a solid method and 100% agree keeping the substrate rich and the water column lean seems to be a good approach 👍

Cheers from my fish room channel in Chicago, where I am a delighted subscriber to yours! For me the hierarchy is 1) light 2) Co2 3) water chemistry/filtration and then 4) fertilization. Fish waste is the primary fert for plants. I add an all-in-one once a week after water change and that's it.

Hello from Los Angeles! I've never considered how nitrate in the water column can be a deficiency too. I'm going to try and dose 2ppm of nitrate daily and see what happens. Thank you again for these long forum videos, I love listening to aquascaping video essays during tank maintenance. Green Aqua is another fav of mine

Thank you so much for listening and watching i really appreciate it! Id say only dose it if you think you need it, if the tank and plants look healthy i wouldnt change too much, but you can always try and if it looks like algae is appearing at least you know to stop as thats the cause, but i think a little, especially in a low stocked tank or heavily planted tank will probably have some positive effects on plant growth 😊 again thank you, and also i looove green aqua, such an informative and inspiring channel!

Super Solid Advice!!!! You're headed in the right direction. I just read Amano's book, "Nature Aquarium World, book 1". ALL of his set ups had akadama as a base substrate and a capping layer. Any ferts added were either used by plants or absorbed into the akadama. With it's high ion exchange capacity, akadama (or even dolomite clay {cat litter/oil dry} has the ability to hold and release nutrients to plants as needed. Thus reducing the amount of fertilizer needed to keep plants happy. But keep in mind, just like corals, some plants fight with each other using hormones. Regular filter cleaning, helps to reduce the spread of these hormones blowing around the tank. Thus reducing the need for water changes.

@@REscapes I have a new scape, only about a month old and I didn't dose anything yet. But gonna start soon and your video came at just the right time! I am thinking of dosing Tropica Premium or APT Zero, and adding K and N on the side if necessary. I'm using ADA Aquasoil Amazonia, the version 1 and the soil in itself is super powerful, so I hope it turns out ok with this kind of dosing. Again thanks a lot for sharing your aquascaping adventures! The good and the bad... 😉
@REscapes
@REscapes Ай бұрын
@SandraYT id say thats a good idea, thats what i would do, ada soil is very nutrient rich which is why their fertilisers and methods of dosing is more lean, the ada way i think is all about having less nutrients in the water column and more in the substrate, at least thats my understanding, so either usuing ada ferts or something like apt zero is probably the best idea 😊

@REscapes Ай бұрын
Ive never used UNS as thats hard to get in the UK but i can imagine its good, and likely similar to ADA,s. Its such a shame you dont have the options, can you get 2hr aquarist stuff as they are worldwide delivery, i believe? Although i think it might be expensive, another brand ive tried in the past which is more available across wider europe is JBL ferropol. I do like the ADA stuff and inthink its designed to work with their soil too, so you have added benefits of using a full ada substrate system along with their ferts, its just very expensive 😓

What would you recommend doing with Anubias that keeps melting? Every time I get new anubias the whole thing melts including the rhizome. Great videos btw - subscribed !
@REscapes
@REscapes 22 күн бұрын
There is a disease that anubias can suffer from and it can spread in the tank, if its that, its probably best to quarantine the plants before you put them in justbto prevent any more melt, ive read some people soak them in api melafix as its an antibacterial medication but i dont know if theres any proof to that working. Or, if youre putting them in a new set up, wait till you tank is mature, anubias are sensitive to ammonia and sudden changes in perameter swings, and lastly, ensure the rhizome isnt burried or smothered in glue if using glue to fix them 😊

Hey, What is the distance between your light and the water surface. I've got a new light recently, but is actually my first time using a hanging light. Because you know, most of the lighting is fixed with the stand they came with, but with the hanging kit, you can adjust to it.

Id say ots about 30cm above the water give or take a few cm, i too always wondered about this and i find having it higher up( than the usual height you get with lights with legs ) but being able to control the intensity with an app is easier so i think my light runs on about 50%, its too powerful for my tank tbh so its kindve wasted in that regard but the colours are great, and just hangs about 30cm above 😊

Nice video as a hobbyist I've found low tech is more enjoyable you just have to wait longer for results and you can't grow every plant but you also curve you mts (multiple tank syndrome) because once a tank is established for 6 months and all you're doing is maintaining you get bored of it.
