I'm so mad on her behalf on how the fiance even thought about doing a prank on their wedding day. That in itself shows such a lack of respect for the whole thing.

I wouldn’t have married my fiancé at that point. I would take my best friend on the honeymoon and tell everyone to eff off.

There is nothing funny about pranks like this. There are just some things you don't do.

If I was her family, that traveled, I wouldn't think she was the problem. I would be PISSED at him, and run to comfort her. He's the one that ruined everything, not her. She was all in her feels. You feel jitter, in love, excited, overwhelmed and some people start crying. And to be in this little moment, full of love, for your partner, and someone embarrasses you and rejects you like that. It would be heartbreaking. I would be FURIOUS.

What I really hate the most is not the prank and the mess but how people have the audacity to tell her that she's overreacting. Imagine how hard it ia to accept the fact that you got your entire family gathering to see their child, cousin, relative get married, planned for months, to end up ruined bc of a stupid prank. it's not just about the money but come on, why do they have to do that? This 1000% happens. The Catholic Church most likely. They can stop the wedding at any time if they don’t like something. We had to move my wedding because I became pregnant before the wedding and the priest refused to marry us. It’s a legit thing guys. She is not the asshole. I would leave him that night. If it is that she still wants to get married to that guy, the people involved in the prank better be the ones who pay for everything. She has every right to be upset.

My only issue with the “I would’ve said screw the priest and done the ceremony anyway maybe at the courthouse ” is that it ruin your plans, and what you paid for. She didn’t plan or pay for a court house wedding and she shouldn’t have to settle for one, because her fiancé decided to make the day a joke. That could’ve been her childhood church or preacher/priest that she paid for their service so she’d have a day that was full of meaning and love in different ways and her fiancé and his best man ruined that. The magic of the day is gone, she’s been humiliated for a dumb joke. They should’ve checked with the officiant to make sure it wouldn’t cause problems if they were so dead set on the prank.

The truth is, wedding is not a joke. It's a serious matter and a turning point of life. So guys out there don't make this stupid prank just because you like the idea. It can actually give damage to some people and even the bride or groom.

Yeah, I know that people view marriage as a "sacred" etc etc for religious reasons. But like if you haven't taken a look at a marriage license. It's a literally business merger contract where two parties join and share assets. An objection isn't just for social or moral reasons it's for legal reasons also, like any other business that merges they do so in good faith and when there's bad faith it has to be investigated. Personally if I was the bride to be and didn't go through the wedding I'd sue the best man and fiancé for monetary loss and emotional damages.

See when my mom who helped pay for the wedding decided to prank my older sister at the her wedding. The only thing she did was give my sister flowers boys (which where my older brothers). In the end she loved it and really enjoyed seeing my brother covered in Harry Potter stuff and throwing flowers.

My husband and I are both Catholics. Prior to wedding we had to attend pre-cana. Also weeks before the wedding, as Catholics, we had to comply this so-called announcements... that this couple are going to get married and anyone who has the knowledge that for any reason the wedding must not happen must inform the office right away. It is announced for 4 consecutive sundays during mass. So on the wedding day, the officiating priest doesn't ask such question anymore. Weddings must be celebrated solemnly and also seriously. Prank on your wedding day is such a bad idea. I feel so bad for the bride.

The moment for objections historically is because once upon a time men would marry multiple women in different places, so they would give a moment for objections in case any guests knew they were already married/could not give themselves in vows. I mean, if the officiant asked and found out it was a prank okayed by the groom, that's a pretty clear sign the groom isn't taking this seriously. If it's a seriously "til death do us part" believing church, you're entering into a lifelong contract and that's not a joke. Imagine two businesses signing a merger and one decided to pull a stupid prank disrespecting the other at the contract signing before a court official or something. The other business would be right to pull back and evaluate, and the court official would be right to stop and evaluate if they can use their authority to sign off on a serious contract that is not being taken seriously by one of the parties.

I can totaly understand how she feels when it comes to having family out of state come to your wedding. I have family and friends in Japan, Louisiana, and California, for me to imagine inviting them to my wedding just to not get married and having to be told to go home then come back soon later to actually get married is terrible. I did look into this type of thing out of curiosity and they would need something that's classified as a valid legal reason to stop the wedding. Some stories had that they figured it out if it was simple, but if it was more complex the wedding would stop (one was the bride was married already, but ignored her 1st husband cause she walked out on him). So I wonder what reason they gave for the objection or if the pastor was very very traditional about objections cause this doesn't seem used much now or completely stops the wedding? But, in actuality, I probably would have started crying my eyes out, ran off, called my best friend and went on the honeymoon with her. I dont know about other churches, but officially in a catholic church, an investigation (kinda, but strongly look into the person) has to be done, regardless. Look into the groom, look into the reasoning for this objection, look into the bride, and the validity of the objection. i dont know if its still done today, but it used to happen. If you think youre gonna do a prank like this in that kind of place where that kind of thing can and will happen, pass it by the officiant FIRST AND BEFORE the entire ceremony.

In the US the officiant has take the objector asside to find out the reason, but they could continue the ceremony if they find the reason to be invalid. However some won't continue if they feel the couple isn't ready to get married, like when the groom pulls a prank like this

He should’ve known… my husband and I were told to not joke around because there are no jokes to that. The wedding would be stopped than with no chance of going on with it at the same day. So he probably knew it and still kept going on with the prank.

My sister in laws sister had a catholic wedding, and during the ceremony there's a point where the bride and groom kneel. The groom had written 'help' and 'me' on the bottom of his shoes, which was revieled when he knelt. This was about 20 years ago, and the pictures are great! But the bride was pissed

There’s a time and a place for a prank. Your own WEDDING is not it.

I believe it's usually only Catholic weddings that stop the wedding without moving it foward after the objection. In church weddings from other religions it's pretty much up to the officiant to decide how to deal with it. Most officants pull the person aside to discuss the situation away from the audience. They may wait for someone to remove the cause of the disruption before going foward with the wedding. Unless it’s a legal matter, the ceremony would likely continue as planned.

Professional Wedding Planner here: stopping the wedding is a myth and not REQUIRED. It is up to the church’s discretion, however, most churches are flexible and wouldn’t actually stop over a prank. Especially when most people are willing to continue… we don’t have a lot of information, but it sounds like they did the prank and she got embarrassed and left. It may all have happened really fast. Also, as for the SIL, it is very common for people to plan afterparties in advance as many wedding venues are scheduled for 4-5hrs. After photos and formalities (I.e. cocktail hr, reception, dinner, cake cutting and activities) most couples are only left with 2-2.5hrs of dancing. Instead of paying hundreds-thousands of extra dollars to keep the party going AT the venue, many keep the party going elsewhere. Also many venues have a curfew depending on location. TAKEAWAY: I don’t think the SIL knew this would happen lol I think she was just trying to turn the situation around. Still super shitty and I would demand that the best man creates a payment plan to return my $16k investment ASAP. The audacity in people…

I used to work at a wedding venue with a chapel. A couple once decided they weren’t going to get married but the bride had her family stay and celebrate her. That’s what she should have done.
