Over the years I have made prints in the darkroom from all format sizes other than large format, this video shows how I convert my 4x5 field camera into a large format enlarger, plus the resultant print is for sale on eBay to help support my channel.

Martin, you are an absolute treasure. I watch every new video with my kids. In a time where every youtube video is cut like a fast-paced 5min action movie, your slow, long, and calm videos full of interesting facts, stories, and ideas are SO refreshing!

Probably the coolest grandpa alive, it doesn’t get better than watching an old folk doing darkroom prints and being excited about it. I think this must come from my absolute love for Josef Sudek and his work. I suspect there might be some sort of fetish underlying to it but in the end I just wish I could end up doing the same thing in my old age, you’re really awesome Martin, much love from the other side of the channel

This is a very old idea. After Graflex Inc invented the Graflok back, they invented the Graflarger to go with it. The graflarger mounts on the back of a Camera with a Graflok back and has an Aristo cold-light source. If you had a steady tripod, that and your graflarger equipped Press Camera could double as a portable enlarger, or you could buy a cheap baseboard with column like the old "watermellon on a stick" enlargers. As long as Aristo was in business they were still selling those fluorescent tubes, so there must have been a market. Linhof took up this idea when they began using Graflok (International) backs, and they added a condenser light source for color work. So this gadget from Intrepid has a lineage back to the earliest 1950s.

In a few months I'm going to end up buying an intrepid 4x5 pretty much just to use as an enlarger. I use a tripod for enlarging, a pretty solid one, but my current 4x5 camera is a MPP Technical that weighs > 3kg. My tripod is good an solid, but I tried mounting the MPP in the position for enlarging but had genuine worries that something was going to give out.

Thank you for sharing! Thank you, especially, for teaching those of us with less experience how to use multiple filters on a single enlargement. And thanks to you, I will also try using a wetting agent on the final rinse of my prints. I have done so on my negatives for years, but not for my prints. I have used the Intrepid 35mm/120 enlarger for the past year for black and white enlargements and love it. Besides being able quickly change filter settings, a handy feature I use frequently use is the ability to precisely control light intensity to give you more control over enlarger lens aperture and exposure time. I currently have on order the Intrepid 4x5 enlarger. I am just now getting started in large format 4x5 and do not have a scanner that can accommodate 4x5 negatives. I plan to use the Intrepid 4x5 enlarger for both darkroom prints and for digitizing the negatives with a Nikon D850 and a 60mm macro lens. Cheers!

Very inspiring video, and very helpful too! I have been thinking for a while about using my 5x7 Mentor Studio camera as an enlarger as well. I bought an LED panel at Aliexpress and a fitting frame. I have had an idea how to mount it on the camera but no idea how to connect everything with a filmholder. Your video shows me the perfect solution for my problem! Thank you so, so much Martin! Martin as you know I have used my 5x4 with my Intrepid, after some trial and error, its a great setup and the controller just makes it so much easier to do a print, I found I get better results with a dedicated 150mm enlarger lens, as it saves having to remember the shutter opening on the camera lens. I also used to let my kids see me developing prints when they was young, they enjoyed it, great informational video as usual.

Martin, VERY, very nice and helpful video! I've been looking for a decent explanation on how to go about using the Intrepid enlarger and yours is definitely the best. A few short questions if you don't mind: what stand is this one that you're using, do you have any suggestions on which one to get? I plan to try 4x5 photography, zero experience so far so I don't know which one would work. Also, do you know if the 120 film holder could be used instead of the 4x5 one? (I'd love to use the enlarging setup both for my large format as well as for medium format work). Cheers from Croatia! :)
@martinhensonphotography

You can use any type of copy stand that allows you to connect a 4x5 camera, the camera has to have what’s called Grafloc back, you remove that back from the 4x5 camera and fit the Intrepid light source , with the set of negative holders you can fit under the light source covers from 35mm and all other popular formats up your 4x5 size , hope that helps

You may want to try a 135mm lens, to give you a shorter working distance and more magnification.

As mentioned many times over in the comment section, what a great video, thank you for sharing! There is no proper videos on the Intrepid 4x5 which are made by experienced photographers so I was hoping to get a point of view regarding the enlarger head. Do you like the intrepid kit, compared to other enlargers in the past? I considering the Heiland kit, it seems really good but it is a lot more expensive. I am printing B&W as well as Colour up to 20x24''. I would love to hear your or anyones thoughts on this or perhaps someone knows if there is anywhere I can compare them online?

I have a darkroom set up for 4x5 also scan and print 4x5 ,but with an inkjet printer I can't get decent results I always have a colour cast in the white areas, I would love to see how you get the results you get on an inkjet printer and the equipment that you use
@martinhensonphotography
@martinhensonphotography Жыл бұрын
Its the inkset that gives the clour cast, I print through a software called imageprint, that gives me neutral tones with no colour shift, the downside, it will cost you as much as the printer.
