"Who designed this!?" Well, it's designed for diesel, they just reused the port. But yes, they should move it to the front, definitely.

To everyone wondering why so low range why not bigger battery, the reason is simple: Most people who drive these vans do so with an EEA B class driving license. This allows a maximum vehicle weight of 3.5 tonnes. So with a bigger battery, the payload will become tiny or people will need the C1 class license, but people would not want that. We should start a petition anyway to raise the weight limit for Evs
@eDriver
@eDriver 5 жыл бұрын
Oh so it's good that I have my old license and I am allowed to drive up to 7,5 metric tons and truck trains up to 12 metric tons.
@cjeam9199
@cjeam9199 5 жыл бұрын
Nah. Stick with the weight limit. 3.5 tonnes is far more than enough vehicle for most people. People driving vehicles of this size loaded with several tonnes should arguably have a higher licence training anyway. Even currently multi-drop delivery drivers are a goddamn menace.

For a fleet operator, the placement of the chargeport probably won't be much of an issue as they would likely have wall/fence mounted charge units that would allow the vehicles to parallel park - and most will charge overnight/after-hours.

Thanks for reviewing this. One of my long term goals is to make a solar sprinter van conversion into tiny house on wheels. It will be exactly like this design with 2kW solar when driving and expanding to 4-6 kW with awnings at rest. It won't be a highway/freeway van but something on scenic side roads for travelers. Also, I am safe I will put in like a 2-4kW gas generator for emergencies and topping off situations. But, mainly an eco travelers vehicle. Sprinter vans for housing and traveling is ideal and real; tons of videos and KZfaqrs do this. Also, a channel called "Route de Sol" made a DYI bigger truck full solar and batteries. Look them up; they are going from Alaska to the tip of South America on only solar.

That E-Van is so huge it looks like you can put that Nissan Leaf parked beside it inside the van. The features are really very good and I have an idea how to increase the range of that vehicle, by installing Tesla Power Wall 2 battery packs inside the huge cargo compartment. It fits flat to the wall so it will only affect the cargo space minimally, by a few inches. Each of those power wall has up to 14 kWh. energy storage, so you can add more battery packs if you want to increase the range even further.

This is an excellent video, you've considered everything, very carefully and in the real world testing it out on a journey. Well done! Yes, the charge port is too far back for sure, but should not be in front as the vehicle is long and would be too long to park in a bay, but the charge point, I think, should be placed at front of door, not behind it. But you still managed it all OK, using the other door for entry etc., and most times it'll be charged at home anyway. I think it's a brilliant van, really desirable, I'd love to own one. Thanks for this great video, best wishes from Alan, in UK.

An e-Golf drivetrain in an e-Crafter... Well now we know that the drivetrain can handle the weight of a trailer (and I assume, so can most other EVs). So I guess the only reason that VW, and other manufacturers, won’t offer a tow hitch on their electric vehicles, is that they’re just lazy. I mean you can get a hitch on a fossil Golf, so it’s not like they have to invent something new.

Don’t forget where the battery pack resides. Just like the golf R, chance is high that they can’t put a tow hitch because the underside of the car is filled. The golf R has problems because of the exhaust routing. Probably the battery pack of the e-golf stuffs the rear underside full.

Don't complain about the charging port. This car isn't intended for private use. It's for companies with vehicle fleets that will install their own charging stations at their depots. And your testing procedure is just totally wrong for this kind of car. The usage of vehicles like this is: Drive 10 - 15 km then stop the car (from depot to delivery area). Repeat the following procedure for about 8 hours: Start the car, drive 50-100 meters, stop the car, wait for 2-3 minutes (working in the delivery area). After that you drive about 10 - 15 km (back to the depot). Because that's what postmen do.

For last mile use, the potential range isn’t bad. But that’s empty. Get it loaded up to its 970kg to 1720kg net load weight, (depending on spec.). And I can see that range drop by a 1/3 or 1/2. So I can’t see it being used outside a single big town or city. And how many small businesses will be willing to spend perhaps €63,000 ex. taxes. Maybe company delivery fleets.

Great video with that transporter. They should build more cars like that to bring the industries to electric transportation end not using dirty and noisy Diesel .

@@daviddrake7003 Well, that's basic rule in the car industries. And my uncle, who is a master and car technology teacher in school is saying: Only as good as necessary, never as good as possible. And another industrial ruile is: It's all about making money and not to do the humanity a charitable service.

Drive this to Tromso with a ton of Nimber tasks, lol the hardest challenge season 1 episode 2! I love this van, though the interior is so nice for a van and I'd love to drive this everyday at work

Oh no Bjorn is turning into a white van man ! I found myself surprisingly liking this monster - other than the charge port position and range it is a very functional vehicle and this always appeals to me. Fortunately I only need something a great deal smaller :-) .

Regarding the charging port locations the Fastned stations are really well designed with chargers placed next to the car.

Just adapted the diesel van chassis into electric. The van sure deserved more autonomy. 300kms would be fair enough for a daily city drive delivery.

Lika many people already said, the chargingport is at this place because the fuel filling port would be in the same place. This isn't about dumb design, it is all about price. The same reason why they have the same shifting stick and key as the diesel. All about the costs.

Nissan e-NV200 (EV) is based on NV200 (fossil). But Nissan were smart enough to put the charge port in the front. Why didn't VW think about that too?
@barthsimpson3
@barthsimpson3 5 жыл бұрын
@@bjornnyland Maybe they did think about it. But it would have meant more changes to the existing car, which results in higher costs. In the end it may would have been worth it to put in the charger in VW logo like the GTE has. Or on other theory. They expect this car to be mainly used by delivery services. This would mean that it primarily charges in the depot. The charging station there can be placed how ever they want it to. So the placement isn't such a big factor.

Would be good as a camper van conversion, but needs a 70kw battery minimum. That will be one heavy van!

In the U.K Plumbers, joiners, window installers etc use vans this size but we don’t have the infrastructure to support Electric vehicles. Great videos by the way 👍🤓👍

Our infrastructure is getting pretty good, unless you're in the middle of nowhere the always some place to charge, maybe not at the best charging speed but better than being stranded. I live in a village and there's 3 different charging stations within a couple of miles radius. Have a look at zapmap.

haha Helga, nice one. To the size of the transporter its normal for any 3.49t transporter. Driving the ICE things for a long time now. But there are even longer and extra extra high roof at least for the Sprinter types available. But with those you cant get into some "roads" here in germany^^ Sometimes you cant make a left or right turn bc of parking cars. Thats where the fun begins. THX for the vid. PS: DHL has an electric transporter but over 3.49t close to 5t i read somewhere. Would be nice if you have connections there ;)
