Driving up Glendora Mountain Road with less than 100 miles on the odometer! On this drive, while I learn the car, I'm also allowing the car to break in :)

Love how the other drivers know and being considerate about you wanting to go fast by pulling over!

You kinda have trouble gripping the steering wheel I mean your thumb is switching above and bellow the wheel all the time I mean its not really struggling quick suggestion of mine is to do a thumbs up while holding the wheel :D instead of grabbing it like a pole. It's my preference everyone elses is different but who knows you might like it.

@@Ducky-kg8lv Interesting observation 🤔 This was my 2nd time driving it, including the day I drove it at the dealership and brought it home. I was taking it all in still, between all the aspects of a new car, getting re-acquainted to GMR, I guess my focus was on many things. Now that I think about it, normally my hand placement changes by turn, depending on the degree of turn in. I don’t like my hands crossing over so move them. Sort of like drifting but without letting the wheel slide between my fingers in between transitions. On the track, your point is valid with the thumbs. Nobody should allow their thumbs to be in the way of a wheel incase is snaps on you 👍🏽

@shift__robinson Yep yep I respect your point and I get what you're saying. Looking to get myself a gr86 aswell by next year as my first fully owned car that aint my parent's cvt sedan 😆. Is there anything to look out for? Do you have any tips servicing the car, etc.?

@@Ducky-kg8lv That’s awesome to hear! I think you’d really enjoy the car. If I can ask, what are your plans for it? I’d say for anyone that will strictly daily it, nothing needed really. Spirited driving of any kind, at least upgrade your engine oil to a 30w, and overfill it about 1/2 a quart. If you plan to track it occasionally, then try anywhere between a 30 or 40w engine oil, and overfill 1/2 - 1 full quart. There are some other mods for track dedication but that rest serves most of the owners out there. Otherwise, enjoy it! When do you plan on getting one?

i usually do the canyon roads around Malibu (closer to me) but have been meaning to hit this one - did you take east fork or just go back down gmr?
@shift__robinsonАй бұрын
Malibu is fun. There are plenty of connecting roads to keep you going on a loop. I think you’d like GMR if you’re into technical turns and elevation changes. I came back down this time around but next time I’ll continue onwards and connect to Azusa.

great video, GMR is so fun ! Just watch out for them cyclists in those tight turns. On your way down, did you notice any brake fades with the stock pads and fluid ? If not, do you think it’s because of the brembos ?
@shift__robinsonАй бұрын
Thank you 🙏🏽 Its a fun road. The notorious cyclist are my least favorite part of driving there, however during the mid day you see a lot less. Great question! No fade what so ever. I also didn’t ride the brakes too hard but the Brembo’s slow it down real quick which in turn keeps me from using them as much. I’m curious to see how well it does on track.

Nice video! Im waiting for my 24’ BRZ TS. Just ordered last week with my dealer. I like the front end on the 86 a little better but i got a good deal from my Subi dealer cause i bought a 22 WRX for my son about 2 years ago! Hopefully mine comes in by July! Any mods so far? Im planning to supercharge mine! Gonna do coilovers and wheels with full bolts on and E85 first!
@shift__robinsonАй бұрын
Thank you 🙏🏽 Great choice! My buddy is considering the same and of course I’m nudging him in that direction over the new Miata. I like what makes the TS different, it’s a cool twin sister kind of vibe. Hopefully you got close to msrp as well! Great question! I honestly have felt the more I’ve driven it, the longer I wish to keep it oem. I do plan to compete in 86cup’s time attack within the stock class. I can do track supporting mods/safety mods (pads, fluids, camber bolts, seats, etc) but I like all that it comes with. Its so dialed in from factory, compared to my track 07 Z and previous Nb Miata I also tracked. Your build sounds wild! I hope to see it! Are you in the SoCal area?

I just got one of these. So track mode = sport mode?
@shift__robinsonАй бұрын
Congratulations! 🎉 I learned recently that automatics have an additional mode called “Sport” mode which keeps the rpms up for spirited driving. They also have a “Snow” mode for helping with slip. Manuals don’t have those. However, it does have “Track” mode. That disables traction control. Then the image of the car with the tires marks can disable stability control.
@kronos-7628Ай бұрын
@@shift__robinson damn. Ok, so mine is manual. Im on day 2. I have yet to enable track mode, cuz reasons. I was tripping out watching your rpm’s!! I was worried about 3500… lol
@shift__robinsonАй бұрын
Totally understandable. There’s a lot of skepticism on how to drive a car brand new before 1k miles. With many hours spent researching what manufacturers do, how performance teams build engines, etc. I realized a few things. 1. Metal does not like to expand and contract rapidly. 2. The rpms need to sweep up and down, especially very early on (first few hundred miles) for the piston rings to seat against the cylinder walls properly. If you do those two things, you shouldn’t see any tragedy lol I always warm up my cars, but specifically within break in, I waited until its damn near operating temperatures. That day, I didn’t move the car until all temps were up (coolant 210, oil temps above 180). Then I cruised over to the mountain (~30 miles). Didn’t turn it off while I was setting up the camera. Then you saw the rest 😁

On a side note, and responding to everyone in this comment section. Track mode does NOT turn off traction control completely... it is still there to help stop you from spinning out... it's just really dumbed down.. in my 2020 GT86, there is something called a pedal dance that turns the traction control off completely, letting you drift properly, or just do donuts in a parking lot. 😋 when breaking in a motor, i have found you should rev it a bit, like how you will be driving the car in the future... like OPer said, it will seat the valves and rings better, and it will get the motor ready for the hard driving later... basically just drive it like you would, but not quite too the 7500rpm redline... unfortunately, i got mine at 18k km and the guy who custom ordered the car, and broke it in, either didn't know how to drive a standard, or thought it would be a burnout machine, and didn't know about the pedal dance... either way, he definitely burned the clutch a bit... but thanks to that bad driving, the engine seems to of been broken in properly. 😆
@chriss2841Ай бұрын
Bro, you are supposed to keep the rpm below 4k during the break in
@shift__robinsonАй бұрын
Not necessarily true.
@chriss2841Ай бұрын
@@shift__robinson Doesn't the owners manual say keep it below 4k for the first 1k miles?
@shift__robinsonАй бұрын
Indeed it does. It would most likely be a legal mess if it didn’t. They put that in there to cover their 🍑
@CrisheightАй бұрын
That's what is recommended tbh, but some people do their own thing. I think a big part is varying the revs which is even stated for standard under 4k break-in, so maybe that's why driving like this works too. For instance, if I'm mid turn I don't care if I go over 4k RPM (no redline though), I'll go to like 6k just for the larger variance, but most of the time under 4k. Only other thing is to do an early oil change at 1000 miles to remove any metal from break in period. edit: luckily if you get the manual the gearing naturally has you shift and vary revving - sitting on the highway is what you don't want to do because it forces constant rpm, but over worrying about these kills the fun too.
@shift__robinsonАй бұрын
@@Crisheight You brought up really good points. The most important aspect to break in before driving is engine warm up. Metal doesn't like to expand nor contract rapidly. It should reach full operating temps (180 + deg F for oil, 210 deg F for coolant) before hand. The only true break-in required happens during the rpm sweep, the piston rings need to seat against the cylinder walls like you mentioned. The most crucial time frame for this in within the first couple hundred miles. Then of course, any extra shavings that need to come out happen at the 1st oil change at the 1k mile mark. Toyota makes dependable engines. I usually say to drive it like you normally would during ownership. For most people this applies.
