I love the idea of leaving a hand written note. “We are so sorry for your loss. Please know your loved one will receive the utmost respect in our care.”

Went on first house call at age 13 with my dad. Family said “I see you’re starting them young Gil” was up on second floor, way before days of flexible/portable stretchers, when funeral directors used station wagons and hearses. My dad told me to not say a word and and just stay close to him at all times. Some tips: always ask for permission on everything even if it seem obvious the answer will be yes...ask to move furniture, and for permission to see where deceased is, if not obvious, if any family member asks to help, never turn them down...always tell the family ahead of time on how you are going to do the removal, what path you are going to take, etc. so family can sort of visualize it in their mind before you do it. Once deceased is on cot, I bring cot cover up to chest-chin area like a blanket with face uncovered and ask family if they want to say goodbye or have a few more moments before we leave. I offer family the opportunity if they want to accompany me out to minivan or coach, sometimes help is needed if deep snow, uneven sloping yard, or crushed stone drive...and if there is an able grandson or family member and they seem to want to help I either coach them on how to load cot or allow them to assist in placing cot into van/coach much like a pallbearer...sometimes it is a direct cremation and the removal in a sense is that family’s funeral.

You bring such a good heart and good energy to our profession. Your ideas for leaving a flower, or something else that might be fitting, and tidying up the room / making the bed are fine examples of doing something small and tender. Might I suggest, coming from a place of a funeral director for more decades than I'm going to admit here and from being present when my mother and younger sister died, that, instead of making the bed, you tidy the bed and turn the blankets/sheets down. I think it's a little less sterile, and I also think that you might have a child, or a spouse, who wants to crawl into those blankets and pillows and weep after we leave.

"Transfer" is also known as "first call" in some places. Making the bed and leaving the flower is a wonderful and lovey touch that brings comfort to an awful time.

I see this is an older video,but making the bed,and putting a flower on it,is such a warm and touching thing to do.I,personally,would find alot of comfort in that.Thank you.

Home removals are the worst. I did a home removal where the deceased room was so cluttered with shit, it was hard just getting to the body, and the family didnt want us to move any of it. They said oh this was her favorite item please leave it there and it went on and on. I really wanted to tell the family..well you bring her down to the van then since we cant move shit.

As a mortuary science student, working with a funeral home, I am just starting the basics. But it's nice to have advice from people who have done the work before. Sadly there aren't much of home calls out here anymore as most people usually will be in an LTC facility or a hospice when they die. But it will come in handy when those calls come.

In my day, we ran an ambulance out of our Funeral Home. Transferred many from third and fourth floor rooms. You have presented this subject well.

Great video! Loved the personal touches like making the bed and leaving a flower. My sister passed away in a home hospice situation- hospital bed in the living room. This was my first and only experience w a home death I observed. And the emptiness was enormous! The bed, empty and rumpled. Oxygen machine silent after listening to it for more than a week. It’s so different from a hospital death where we said our good-byes then left. Yes to return to a home which now felt empty but in a different way. In another home death, 911 had been called but Mom was declared deceased on site. When I arrived, she was gone but the bed and floor was littered with remnants of resuscitation attempt. It was unnerving as well. Thanks for all you do! While this is obviously great for 5hose in training I feel you and Kari are helping break the taboos of our culture around death. Sadly, but fortunately too, my kids lost great- and grandparents early in their lives. I don’t know how but I embraced the process, asking funeral directors to show them around behind the scenes as appropriate - mostly casket sales room where they got to look, feel, choose what they’d like, etc. when my sister died (mentioned above) two were there. Before removal, my youngest painted my sister’s fingernails. Previously, when her step%0-mom died at home, she helped her nurse daughter bathe her, put fresh clothes on before removal. Maybe we will see somewhat a return to family caring through videos like yours. Thank you!

Very helpful! I definitely didn't think of making the bed or leaving a flower, I love that idea. Only one removal from a house so far, it's not common in Florida or in this day and age.

Once again, an excellent video. Every word true. Reminds me of all the removals that I've been involved with, some easy some difficult, but it's something that has to be done and the required skills are not learned overnight. Look forward to hearing more.

Thank you for talking about making the deceased person's bed, and leaving a flower or handwritten note. I remember as a child entering my grandmother's bedroom after she died and finding everything tossed around---it was so upsetting. I knew she was very ill and didn't have long to live but it just seemed so wrong. A tidy bed with a flower or a note with a Bible verse would have been comforting.

All of this is now addressed in funeral service college now, Jan 2021, you hit on very real points, and my program is teaching me these exact point, in Tennessee

I work as a removal tech for a local funeral home and I can relate to what you're saying. Our house gives its transport staff uniforms with the fh logo. And yes, upstairs removals can be a nightmare. Sounds to me like you had a good director, and a good attitude. You live and you learn the do's and do not as you go

I do not work in the funeral industry. I have been present for the in home removal of several of my relatives. This service has to be the most difficult part of your job.

HAHA a gym membership would have been great to know about prior to me getting my job at the Corners office. When I started, I was barely able to lift the decedents head off the autopsy table. When I quit, 3 years later, I was able to move a 375 pound body alone. Its definitely a hard job!!!

When my Dad died,the funeral home sent two women who picked him up-they had to carry him out because the hallway was too narrow -we think that JT(MY DAD )would have gotten a kick out of it.

I'm glad you prefaced how patient your director was, because as soon as you said black skinny jeans, I was scared for you lol. I'm surprised they didn't bring that up during school, one of the first classes of my first semester our professor told us we had to wear basically a full suit and I just remembering thinking how crazy that sounded!

So I work for a funeral home as removal personnel and a driver. I definitely agree on the fact that the best removals are the ones that are on the first level of the home. Although lately most of my removals are from hospitals or the ME. As far as what you wore tho it’s similar to what I wear for a call. I make sure to wear khakis and a black polo. I’ve had some doozies of removals tho. A lot of the homes in my area have a lot of narrow hallways so it’s definitely a good idea to do a fast walk through so you and your partner can come up with a game plan of what to do and how you’ll be able to respectfully remove the deceased from the residence. Will definitely check back in for more videos.

Man the paper work should at best be done always before you enter to your best ability. Then add the rest upon receiving the hospice notes. In hospitals u need a face sheet and body release or no moving period. Always follow your first mind and be courteous cause it may just garner u a tip!

Hello! I am finishing up funeral school and I have a question about bulking up; everyone in my family is skinny, and due to our high metabolism-- growing muscle is very difficult. Would just lifting weights be sufficient enough on training myself for transfers?

Hi! I am only 4'10"... I am so nervous about doing removals on my own. How am I going to remove a decedent on the 2nd or 3rd floor alone? What is the best advice for short-armed people like myself?

I recommend not returning the sheet you wrapped the deceased in back to the family especially at the funeral. The funeral home that took my dad did that. Walked uo to me with it in a ball and handed it to me. I wanted to crawl in the casket with my dad at that moment. Especially when i looked at it and saw bloodstains. I walked out back and put it in their dumpster before my mom saw it,i couldn't even believe they did it! It still haunts me to this day.

great video, and the flower on the decease bed, it really bring comfort to the family left behind to deal with the absent of their love one now gone, it is a touchy move; what would you do when the body is so advance discompose and leaking, would you place this body in a plastic bag and zip up and transfer, when i get bodies usually Jewish decease, they come with everything from cathere, iv, you name it, and they are transfer in black bags, I after checking the cause of dead, name the whole data and enter my name, i proceed to unzip the bag and sometimes the body can be a little bit smelly, but usually this preparations, inspections, removal of iv's etc, and apply any tape to secure the opening, eliminating any excess bleeding, and the whole nine yard, the body is transfer to the coffin, all ready bath dress and neatly cover, i just going through some steps, but in reality it is more than this, but the body is bury in 24 hours. How do you do when the body is not embalmed and need to be bury in longer, but family don't want embalming?

Our current pastor was telling about when the funeral director arrived to pick up his mother after she passed... First, he put a sheet on the floor then slid her to the edge of the bed then half slid/half dropped her onto it, yes DROPPED, because, yes, old house & the stretcher wouldn't fit in the doorway of the bedroom, luckily it was the ground floor. He then preceded to tell him that 'she's already gone, this is just a shell'... He followed that with 'do we want to drag her or carry her to the stretcher?'... :O Yes, they carried her :/ I never did ask but all I could think was I hope you reported this guy to the state, there is no excuse for this level of disrespect!

When my uncle passed away I do not know what to do

If it's a residence, ask if they have a pet & if so, have them let that pet in to sniff the person while they wait for you because you emit a scent when you die & pets can pick up on it, letting them sniff the decedent actually gives them closure that the person is gone. To see a pet constantly waiting/watching for their human can also be upsetting to the family. If the death was someplace else, ask the funeral director if you can set up a time to bring in the pet if possible (yes, this is primarily with cats/dogs) so they can see/sniff the person to get that closure.

I recently started doing removals part time. I'm always at a loss of what to say. My boss says I don't need to say anything. But I feel the need in certain settings. My grandad passed away at home , the funeral directors attending damaged our property, broke lamps and expensive ornaments and denied it was them .We only noticed after they had left , grieving families don't expect to have to check these things .
