Here are some things I learned during my first month writing full-time. I finished a draft of my fantasy book, produced an audiobook for my last short story collection, and got ready to make a review video for you guys about a new novel drafting platform. The month started rough, but I got the hang of it and now have new strategies moving forward with my next novel!

You brought up something really interesting. Pushing through a day of writing, even when you're having a tough time at it. How do you do that? Amazing video! 😀 I've had the opposite problem, where I get so zoned in on one project that I fail to work on anything else (it wouldn't be an issue if it hasn't been so on-going, to the point where my author platform has been steadily collecting dust) 😂😅 I really like the idea you have, where you dedicate a week to other work, and then one day a week after that! Trying to write a wet navy science fiction book, 142 manuscript pages done still a fair way to go, events are speeding up and i got three action pieces to go through. but i already know a lot of changes will happen when i do second draft. Despite being science fiction, i need to do a lot of research just to make things 'right'. Even when not writing or researching, I am still thinking about it. I did write a book before, but even before I finished it, I knew I would not publish as it was the wrong way to approach the story, but I finished it to develop my writing 'skills'. It finished at 125 manuscript pages. This new one is a different approach to that story and very different, but it is already better than my old story.

What's your process to expand your under-writing. I have the same problem a lot of the time.
@HannahLeeKidder
@HannahLeeKidder 3 жыл бұрын
Multiple drafts! It's harder, for sure--I wanna be brief and done with it. So I usually do the first draft of what I naturally want to write, then I'll go back and really expand the scenery and the character's tactile interaction with the environment, THEN I go back and beef up the inner monologue, like having the character reflect on what's already happened or anticipate what will happen. I find I lean very heavily on subtlety because of my experience with flash fiction, which definitely isn't a bad thing, but in a longer piece I just have the room to do more, so it's definitely a conscious effort. :) Apart from that, I ask my readers and critique partners to note any parts they want to see more of or feel can be expanded.
