Well, here we are. My first night car camping with the original setup in my 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan. I've made a few changes as a result of this experiment, which was the purpose, of course. So, there will be a 2nd video sometime in the future. And hopefully a better video. LOL
Find me everywhere I am on the Internet here: timchilders.bi....
I started this channel in order to document life as it gets lived. It's about where I live, how I live, where I travel, why I travel, and so much more. Eclectic is a good word for the content to be found here. I hope you will come along for the ride!
Affiliate and other monetization links:
Want to buy me a cup of coffee to keep the creative juices flowing? You can on my Ko-Fi account here: ko-fi.com/timc...
Looking to buy camera gear and accessories for photography or video? Search Adorama, one of the largest in the world, with this affiliate link. If you buy something, I get a few pennies here and there: adorama.rfvk.n...
Wanting to get money back every time you buy gas (along with other purchases are online stores and restaurants)? Upside might be something you'd like to explore. Take a look around at their website at upside.com. Then, when you download the app, use code TIM22542 when you sign up.
Want to get money back when you go grocery shopping? Probably my biggest money saver. That's an app called iBotta. Use my referral code to sign up and start getting money back today! ibotta.onelink...
Last, would you like to earn money back on nearly everything you purchase? You can probably find what your looking for at one of the stores represented by Rakuten. Choose from getting money back or getting American Express Reward Points. My link is www.rakuten.com/r/TCHILD175?eeid=28187

I, too, am retired and am enjoying car camping out of my Toyota Highlander. Started last fall and have been out four times, 3 nights each trip. I focus on staying at National Forests, not park, campgrounds. Got a senior lifetime pass so it's usually $10/night. Just the right amount of privacy, nature and security for me. Like you, each time I camp I come up with more improvements and that's part of the fun! Here are my camping tips garnered from KZfaq videos: 1. I bring an old, flat bed sheet and use it on the picnic table. Gives me a clean surface and nothing falls through the tabletop cracks. Simple to wash when I get home. 2. Upgraded to a 4" trifold memory foam mattress, twin extra long. Easy enough to level out with additional blankets. 3. Bought a pop-up shower tent. Good place to pee at night and I can get dressed standing up. 4. Screens are a must in warm weather. I have a magnetic one for the sunroof, a pair of slipover ones for the middle passenger windows, and a large screen for the rear. Also use a usb fan.

I joyously gave up camping in 1987, and it is always interesting to watch videos of campers struggling with heat, cold, insects, refrigeration, cooking, sleeping, and of them experiencing the rewards of the ever-present enjoyment of coffee. For me, the food preparation is always the most fun to watch, maybe because eating is fun, and even watching someone else cook and eat is fun. Sort of like watching someone else de-clutter. I always enjoy your videos.

I always freeze a gallon jug of water then place it in my cooler the night before. It cools the cooler before I put my stuff/ice in the day of. I have an Engel cooler. Then when camping I keep a damp towel over my cooler because I keep it in my car, due to its weight. Its too heavy for me to lift in and out, and I car camp for a week or two. Battery operated fan and a thick foam pad. Nice set-up!

We love camping. Now we have a small camper. When my mom retired, she took a long trip across country. She slept in her Subaru wagon. But she also took a small pup tent to both free up room for sleeping and to keep a “presence” at her site if staying more than one night. I dream of doing same one day. Love the awning.

You mentioned a driving trip that would go to Rochelle IL, and you weren't sure what was there if interest. IF you drive 54 miles south on Illinois 39, that will bring you to Ottawa ( IL and the destination of STARVE ROCK ILLINOIS STATE PARK. If you've never been, it's magnificent and history. The caverns, the waterfalls, the overlooks to scenery. Illinois River, the Mississippi River and the Eagles that nest at the park. So whether you choose Starve Rock or Matthiason Park, neither will disappoint your photography session. It's basically my backyard and the stretches of kettles and forest can't be beat.

Camping looks like a lot of work, but there are ways around much of it. Keep a master list of what is needed so that you don't have to reinvent the wheel. Bring USB charged fans, and a small charging block that you can plug into your ciggarette lighter. Bring a rechargeable flashlight as well. Bring frozen food, which will allow your ice to last longer. This video excited me fot my camping trip this summer with my two dogs. Its call of the wild for them, they go back to their wolf selfs.😊

Good for you. My husband and I camped for 26 years and loved it. The problem was that with camping and traveling with 3 kids we were more tired when we got home than when we left. That experience did give me wonderful memories. In the 1990s we decided to hang it up on the camping and enjoy staying in one place in a nice condo or Airbnb. I still have the first tent that we purchased in 1968 which was a 2 man pup tent. We camped all over the west with it and even took it to Hawaii. That tent and 2 sleeping bags was our accommodation for 1 week on 3 of the islands. Sometimes we just threw the bags on the beach and slept there. Other times there were beautiful camp grounds. The one had flush toilets, hot showers, green lawn, lagoon and waterfall and we were the only 2 people there. I still have a 2016 large high roof Transit van that I purchased for the business. It has very few miles on it and I have thought many times of converting that into a travel RV.

Thank you for another great video. I have camped all my life and backpacked from the 1970s. I sleep my best when camping. I would rather camp than stay in a hotel. My rig now is a minivan but have used the same bed in a Jeep Patriot too and it is really great. I have a self inflating matrices that is 3 and 1/2" thick and has a foam core. Mine is made and sold by REI, and mine is short because I am verticality challenged. If you go up in elevation more than 2,000' you need to open the inflating valves and it is a good ideal to do the same if the day's are going to be hot. Battery or usb fans are really nice too. I love camping in the fall winter and spring the best because, no bugs, the stars, and it is less crowded. Living and camping out of a vehicle has allowed me to escape winter and see many parks, wilderness areas and preserves as well as historic sites. It is shocking how inexpensive you can travel in a car or minivan. My late husband taught me that when conditions are bad or you just want to watch a football game, a Motel can be a nice treat. Traveling in a vehicle and camping is a great platform for exploring this continent. Don't make it too comfortable or you may not want to go home...❤😊

I just returned from my three week solo overlanding trip number three since retiring last year. I always learn new skills and strengthen my confidence. I’m so glad you’re seeking this outlet! I have reworked my pack out each time to fine tune. I drive a Toyota FJ Cruiser with a Rooftop Tent and 270 awning. I also quickly realized the 12V fridge was the way to go. I also have two Jackery’s for power.

Try a gutter guard for your windows for airflow. Cut it down to size of your window. It has grooves on the top and bottom that should fit right around the glass and into the top of the window.

One thing I learned not to do while camping is to have anything open in the car while there is a wood fire nearby. Otherwise, the car will smell like it was in a forest fire. It’s even worse when it’s a car someone else usually drives, and they didn’t come camping. The cause of doing this was group camping in the rain. Those awnings are great for diverting smoke into a rear hatch.

I just retired May 31, and my teardrop camper (essentially a bed on wheels with AC and an outdoor kitchen) is almost done being repaired from the mid-April massive hailstorm we had here in CenTex. Once my car repair (same storm!) is done in about 3-4 weeks, I look forward to getting on the road with the dogs and getting OUT of Texas and the heat and finding places north until mid-September. Thanks for the view and for the motivation to get this trip planned.

Great video. I had to cancel my week long cabin camping dues to the heat dome. From one old timer to another, just some suggestions you might find useful: * Replace the black tie-downs with something either very bright or glow in the dark. * Instead of using foam pads as padding, get an inflatable pad, the kind hikers use, not an air mattress but the thinner rugged type. These will roll up nicely for easy stowage. * Look up a YouTubber who calls herself, "Shoestring Martha"; she's a frequent boondocker out of her 4Runner.

One of the newer DIY TENDS is using Gutter Guard covers on the top portions of your car/truck/van windows. Easy to cut them to fit. They allow for fresh air without bugs. Good for ventilation when cooking inside on rainy days if you install Rain Guards. 1 or 2 small USB fans and your good 😉. Enjoy your retirement👍. Nice calm camp!

A solar generator would power your camera equipment, run a fan and also a plug in cooler. They don't produce any fumes or noise and can be charges from home before you leave if you don't want to use the solar panels. The cooler I've used is from Aldi. It is available for $50, starting tomorrow. We checked ours with a medical lab thermometer and it runs around 37 degrees. For netting, I've seen mesh tarps that could be thrown over the car, allowing the sunroof to be open and heat to escape. Check out Mile High Campground in Cherokee, NC on the Blue Ridge Pkwy. 5000 ft elevation and EVERY site has either a stunning sunrise or sunset view. Primitive campsites but there are showers and bathrooms. Unbelievable place. The high, in August when we were there, was 65-68.

I’m glad that you enjoyed this adventure. The 1st time we camped w/kids (toddlers), they got so dirty that if they laid down on the ground, we couldn’t find them! It led to a family life of camping that our two sons carry on with their families. We really "graduated" when we purchased a 1994 tent trailer that we still own and that one son still uses. I’m sorry that you didn’t have a campfire. To me, that's a highlight in the evening AND in the morning. There’s just something totally mesmerizing about a campfire. Add in a sweet dessert in the evening and you're in heaven. S’mores, anyone!? I’m sure there are KZfaq videos about starting and ending a campfire. I’m sorry that this is so long but I’m stunned to read the comments of many women in this community who seem to camp on their own. I’m 75, reasonably healthy and would like to get back in to camping. But heading out on my own seems so challenging. As always, thanks for sharing…

Some time ago, I built out a small trailer for camping. A video showing the build out is on my channel. It was very comfortable. But now I like my luxuries - like a bathroom. You might enjoy a channel called Hike Camp Climb. He also does some no speaking ASMR videos and his camera work is so good. I love his winter videos when we can hear the snow or sleet hitting the tent. The sounds of him chopping wood to put in his small tent stove is very relaxing. I think you’d enjoy.

Go solar! The solar charging power banks are amazing. They are more than capable of keeping your phone charged. You can also charge them via usb while driving. I have several now and they are used mostly for phone, fairy lights, usb fans, bug zapper, and lights. I use the solar powered garden lights for outside my vehicle. And I agree with others about the window nets, game changer for air flow and keeping the bugs out. I just got a no plug hybrid small SUV and I think I’m putting the SUV tent extension on my Christmas list, lol. I prefer to sleep in the vehicle as a solo camper but it’s nice to spread out during the day. I also have a portable hammock stand and hammock with bug screen for lazy days when I just want to chill and read a book. Happy car camping, it’s the best imho.

We have tent camped along with an oversized van in the 70’s when money was tight and kids were young. Took a trip from midwest to west coast and was on the road for 4 weeks. Four of us and my brother, stayed a few days with relatives in Washington State and Phoenix, Arizona. Kept a journal and tracked every penny which I still have - spent less than $1,000 including gas!! Later when my husband had a contracting business we had a two person fifth wheel , then an all season pull behind. We have zigzagged across the US multiple times and seen the most magnificent country. Now my husband is in early 80’s and we do just hotels.. Love your videos and realistic info ! Enjoy your travels while you can.

I just got back into canopy camping last year. Took my first trip car (small SUV) camping a couple weeks ago. You go into that first trip thinking you know what you will need and thinking you know what will work, and finding you got some of it wrong. My experience with truck canopy camping last year was you go into the 2nd and 3rd etc. nights armed with experience and a better idea of what you really need and what you can do without. Those mosquito nets for windows are a must. A foam pad for sleeping is a must for me. You can get a 3" or 4" tri-fold mattress (couple layers of hard foam and an inch or so of gel foam on top) fairly cheaply off Ebay or Amazon. I, of course, didn't go that route and bought some (expensive) hard foam through a local upholstery guy and added a couple inches of (not too expensive) gel foam from Walmart to go on top of it. I bought a thin but warm king-sized blanket that I fold over and don't even need a sleeping bag unless it drops into mid 30's. I sleep on top of the sleeping bag for more padding but have the sleeping bag handy in case I need it. Fro cooling your vehicle at night I suggest a rechargeable fan with a clip mount or some way you can put it where you need it. Handy for pulling air in from one of the windows or just to blow on you on hot nights to help keep you cool. My thoughts on a couple of subjects, take them or leave them as you see fit.

By the way, and like you mentioned, to me the best part of camping is having breakfast and a cup of coffee next to a river or a mountain lake. For me that, and getting some nice pictures, is the highlight of camping, that hour or so in the morning that makes all the preparation and driving worth it.

As a kid, we did the tent camping thing for a minute -- but after a rainy night - sleeping bags on the ground, waking up wet was not my thing. Your adventure looked well thought out, loved the breakfast; missing a biscuit, home fries and a table cloth. The shot where your back is to the camera, looking at the lake drinking coffee--priceless, frame-worthy. 😊🚙

I love watching from the beginning. I am biding my time as I take care of my aging parent. I feel blessed that I have a ton of camping experience, but I am honestly looking at car camping and eventually van dwelling as the next chapters and I feel like learning how to make that happen is a life skill I'm learning. Currently have my '24 Subaru Outback set up to car camp and it's SUCH an improvement over tent camping! Especially as I am growing older. Subbed, and looking forward to watching you grow.

USB rechargeable fans that you can clip to the grab bars (we call them "oh my gosh!" bars 😂) over the back doors are great for beating the heat. I have 4 of them. No-see-um netting so you can vent the windows is also a plus, allows a little air in/heat out and helps reduce condensation. You are spot on with the WeatherTech window covers! Those are awesome!
