You are such an excellent teacher. For me, the pace of this tutorial was exactly right - not too fast, but also not tediously slow. Would you please consider doing a separate tutorial on some alternative heels? I am especially interested in the fish lips kiss and the afterthought. I like the way they look. I have purchased the fish lips kiss pattern, but I'm such a visual learner, I'd love to see you demonstrate step by step. The written pattern is intimidating to me. When I can see it done, I usually have that aha moment and think oh yes, now I get it. Thank you for sharing your knitting expertise and your teaching talent with us. So glad I found your channel.

Marly, big 'thank you' for the tip on using an extra needle to pick up the heel flap stitches. Picking up stitches is my least favorite part of making socks and I don't know why I never thought to use a spare needle to help with that part. Love this!!!! Thank you!!!!

Since Marly said best to do all in one sitting, I got only one sock done. But then I had to put it away for a few days due to other appointments and commitments. Got up first thing this A.M. then got to work! All done, both socks look amazing and no holes! Thank you Marly for your step by step instructions. So addictive that I went ahead and knitted some of the foot, (oops, sorry.) Can’t wait to finish the foot and toe. #marlybird, any chance of making a video on how to work toe-up socks? (Gosh, we enjoy your teaching so much we just can’t get enough and keep asking for more!)

Do we end our homework on row 1 or row 2 of the gusset repeat? Thank you so much Marly for these videos. I have been wanting to knit socks for at least 2 years now and I have watched hours of KZfaq videos trying to figure out how to do it. These videos are the first that I have found that take you from point a to b and c and so forth where as other tutorials have left me stumped at some point from lack of instruction. You are my new favorite person. I'm so excited about knitting socks. One request, could you maybe do a part 7 where you explore how your sock recipe can be altered to add say, a fish lips kiss or afterthought heel. I hate to even ask but the way you explain things - its like no one else. ❤❤❤❤

Hi again, Marly Bird. I revisited this segment just to confirm my notes from our first socks a while back. I recently started a new pair of Christmas socks but started them toe up, apparently forgetting that your pattern was cuff down. Then I revisited Part 4 on the heel flap and heel turn, which I’ve done. 😳 So my question is should I rip these sections out or can I adjust my mistake somehow so that it can work out? What do you think? The heel flap fits under my heel and the turn also cups my heel perfectly. Sigh. Next time I’d better take better notes! Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃😊

Hello Marly, what a joy to listen and follow your instructions, I got to do my cute little triangle on the ladies size and only had to undo the first two rows but then it all worked out when I started again. Here is my question: then doing the men size sock do you go in and start your triangle with 17 stitches or something less? i have not done any knitting for 46 years, and now that I retired am eager to learn new tricks. Cheers, and thanks.

On the written instructions under gusset set up round I it says to pick up and knit 2 sts at the top of the gusset. In the video you just place them. On set up round 2 it says knit to last 2 sts and then ssk. ( those are the sts on the marker) are the written directions different than the video? Thanks for any clarification you can give.

Marly, If I am doing a heel turn with different stitch count than what was in the pattern, what is the math to determine what point to knit to before turning? Is it half of the stitches you have on your needles plus one?

Hi Marly, I have a question. Because I am using 4.25mm dbns I cast in 40 stitches in total. When it came to making the Heel Flap I divided it in 2 and used 20 stitches, 20 rows as per your instructions. So far all went well. When it came to knitting the Heel Turn I knitted 13 stitches on the first row before starting the pattern, again as per your instructions. But once I got to the end of the Heel Turn I ended up with 4 stitches at one end to knit and none on the other. Also my neat little triangle looks off centered and I only have 12 stitches left and not 14 as per your instructions. What did I do wrong? Should I have divided the 20 stitches in half and only knitted 10 stitches at the start of row 1 of the Heel Turn? Please help!!! Thanks

I love your look here, and your hair is looking good girl! Question, when starting the heel turn, how do you figure out how many stitches to work before the shirt rows? You say to Purl 13, then decrease then purl, how do you get that number? I like to make socks, and I am working on a design for my toddler daughter, and would like to know how to figure this out please.

Okay, I figured out how to do the math! I went to www.fyberduck.wordpress.com or you can google: how to figure out the math to turn a heel with 20 stitches, and it pops up as the 2nd or 3rd one down.

Great question. Essentially, you purl 1 past center, then do the p2tog, p1... Then turn and work the Instructions from there until all gaps are closed :)!
@patportran4683
@patportran4683 6 жыл бұрын
This all depends on the type of heel you are makiing. There are about 40 or more different heels you can do, and each has a slightly different look. All work, but depends on shape o YOUR heel. One way is to work to centre of the flap (as Marlybird does) and turn. It doesn't matter. To avoid all kinds of confusion for you, just do what she does and don't think about it!! You will learn all the other methods another time.

Um, help! First time sock knitter here. The printed pattern on heel turn says to repeat rows 3 and 4 only, 3 more times for the women’s sock BUT the video says slip 1 as if to purl with yarn in back for beginning of row 4 (8:15) while row 4 on the pattern says to slip 1 knitwise. I have no idea which is correct. I guess I’ll just follow the pattern directions and slip 1 knitwise on every row 4 repeat. Whew, made it through the first sock’s heel turn slipping every row 4’s 1st stitch knitwise with yarn in back and it looks fine to me. Checked a book I have on sock knitting and it says to slip that 1st stitch purlwise whether yarn is in front or back as Marly does in this video. Is there an error in the printed instructions or is it just another way of doing it?

@MarlyBird
@MarlyBird 5 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure if you’re picking up the right stitches but I will say tighter is better than loose. Also, it isn’t mandatory that you pick up two stitches then decrease, you can only pick up one. I was just taught that picking up two leaves less of a hole. Can’t wait to see your finished socks!!! You’re almost done!!!

Hii I am a beginer in knitting , can I use circular knitting needles instead of double point needles?
@Emy-Emz
@Emy-Emz 6 жыл бұрын
Saibu Nisha there are multiple methods out there to make socks! You can use 1 short/small circular needles such as a 8" or 9"; 1 long circular needle, it needs to have a 32" or 40" cord; you can use 2 circular needles; addi flex tips; dpns (and there are all different kinds of dpns, in different sizes, materials and shapes). The technique for using 1 or 2 circular needles is different, and you need to be able to do magic loop. Go on a search on KZfaq and you are bound to find info on all of them. Each has their good points just like each has their down sides too. Take the time to research, play around with, and decide what is good for you. Such as, I like to use the small 9" circular needles and I also love dpns. Also, check out Craftsy.com they do classes where they teach sock techniques, magic loop, 2 at a time socks, toe up socks, cuff down socks, etc. They are a wealth of information! And you can always check in with your Local Yarn Shop to see when or if they offer classes on how to knit socks. This can be very very helpful! Good luck! And happy knitting!

What are the numbers for men’s sock?

14:15 totally wishing you would have been specific about the market and where I should be putting it. You say "right of center". I did my best to guess exactly where that is, per number of stitches and winged it. (Sorry for not updating or deleting this, it made sense as I progressed and should have referred to the pattern and watched the video through, rather than progressing along with it, at the same time.)

It is written specifically in the pattern. Have you gotten the pattern as suggested at the start of the video? The link is in the video description.

@@MarlyBird whoops. I should have gone back and deleted this. Or, at the least, waited until I progressed. Plus, I did finally go and look at the pattern as written. Sorry, your descriptions and tutorials are the best and most thorough that I've found and I really appreciate them. I really enjoyed this tutorial and only have the toe left.

I'm confused as to the decreases. How do I know when to do a "k2tog" "knit 1" and when to do an SSK????
@MarlyBird
@MarlyBird 6 жыл бұрын
It is all written in the pattern.
@MetalGrannie
@MetalGrannie 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for prompt response. I see that. Is there anything that determines decrease method, or is it always Needle 1: Knit to the last 2 sts, ssk and Needle 4: k2tog, knit to the end of the round.
@MarlyBird
@MarlyBird 6 жыл бұрын
That is only on the first round if you pick up the two extra stitches like I show in the video. Otherwise you usually work the decrease 1 stitch before the end.

Ok! I’ll ask. What is putting in a lifeline?
@MarlyBird
@MarlyBird 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there, a lifeline is when you thread a string through the live stitches and let it hang there in case you have to rip back to that point in the project. If you rip back, the stitches won't fall out of place as they are trapped on the lifeline. Here is a link to a video I did for a lifeline. I did show it on a hat but it is the same concept for the sock: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/opqJd5NynbOyc5c.html

I find it easier to pick up stitches with a crochet hook
@MarlyBird
@MarlyBird 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is another way to do it. But there are many knitters who are not comfortable with a crochet hook for anything so I wanted to show how to use the tools they already had available to them :-)

What does it mean...to add a life line?I have had to completely start all over 3 times because I messed up the heel flap. If I mess up again I will cry like a baby! PLEASE help. #MarlyBird
@MarlyBird
@MarlyBird 6 жыл бұрын
even though this is shown on a hat the process is the same for the socks. You want to thread a string through the live stitches so that you have something to rip back to if you mess up: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/opqJd5NynbOyc5c.html

It is somewhat confusing because it looks like your knitting left handed. I carry the yarn on my finger on my right hand.

I’m still knitting the same way you are. I just hold my yarn in my left hand. But everything else is the same.

Help, please I’m following the video series on “my first knit socks, I know the KAL is over but I thought I might still be able to complete at least one pair of socks, having said that, I’m not at the heel turn I have 32 stitches on my heel flap needle and 16 of the other two, I don’t know how many stitches I’m suppose to purl for the heel turn, please refer to Heel Turn Instructions. Be gentle it’s my first attempt. Wink wink

Marly Bird Yes, and I’m so new and learning this by watching, so for the heel turn am I to p 17, p2tog + p1
@MarlyBird
@MarlyBird 6 жыл бұрын
Great, I was just making sure we were on the same page :) Yes, if you have 32 sts you will purl 17 p2tog, p1. The heel turn is usually started by working 1 past center, then work the decrease, then work 2 more and turn.

I am so proud of you for tackling this. Once you get your first pair out of the way the others come so much easier. Honestly, I think that after you've learned how to do a general construction of a sock you will totally understand most other sock patterns. Good luck and be sure to show me your finished pair! xoxo
