The speed of the music was slow so decided to open it up to change the belts.

WE did it!! Thanks for the info. We ordered a set of belts from Amazon and replaced the 2 really old ones- one that had snapped and the other was melted into the motor. It wasn't entirely clear where to put the 2nd belt but logic prevailed and we noticed that the motor belt was at the same level as the top row notch so we put the other one on the lower and the small disc. We had quite a time cleaning off the notch on the motor because of melted old belt. After all the putting back together we pressed play and Voila! we heard our 36 year old child speaking at age 18 months on an old cassette. Yeah. Thanks. It was a great project to try. (especially when it works)

Glad to have helped and I'm happy to hear of your success. It can take a bit of effort and good luck sometimes but it is a boost when things get fixed!

Does the microphone take its own battery? Our microphone isn’t working.

No it has a button which needs to be pressed when talking into it.

What did you use as belts pal ?

I think I just sourced some belts from a collection of assorted drive belts on Ebay.

@@AvidRetro ah right. I just used 2 rubber bands 😆 What were you cleaning at the end there? My sound sounds a little off

@@HRinc Hi it was the pinch roller (rubber wheel) pressing against the capstan spindle. It was not in a clean state and still not brillant due to its age. I still have some wow and flutter. I think a new pinch roller maybe necessary in the future. Good luck with the two rubber bands. They should help you see if it is working but may not last very long.
