My First Thru Hike, Alone in Canada - International Appalachian Trail p1

In 2016 I set off on my first thru hike, what began on the International Appalachian Trail turned into a 4,800 mile hike across the country linking up many trails for one continuous footpath. The International AT followed into the Appalachian Trail, to the Benton MacKaye Trail, Pinhoti Trail, Coosa Trail, Alabama Hiking Trail, Florida Trail, South Dade Greenway, and finishing with the Overseas Heritage Trail. One long hike from Quebec Canada to Key West Florida. But this isn't exactly about that, this is the story of that first trail, my first long distance hike, and how things went on the International Appalachian Trail.
Also known as the Sentier International Des Appalachias, or the SIA, because the majority of this trail goes through Quebec a Canadian Province that speaks French as their primary language. All of the trail markers read, IAT/SIA. The town folk will often not know any english, and for a stupid US citizen such as myself this definitely made things significantly more difficult in every regard. Being in such a foreign place, hiking through the wilderness, and anyone I did meet I couldn't even talk to.
On this hike I had close moose encounters, saw wild seals while hiking along the Gulf of St Lawrence coastline, beavers in the ponds, and of course many many deer. The trail is wild and rugged, the wildlife owns the land and I was just there for the ride. All while of course, learning how to thru hike.
Though I had done hundreds and hundreds of miles of section hikes prior to this trip, a thru hike is a different beast. Looking back I was very naive, but I was extremely determined to achieve my goal. I had prepared for this hike in everyway anyone possible could or would. I was in the best physical shape of my life, I was mentally strong. I had a super ultralight backpacking gear list, weighing in at less than 6lbs. I was dialed in, in every way. Just without the experience to go along with.
It is something very special to me, to be able to share this trail with all of you. I hope if you go out and do the IAT SIA yourself, you are respectful of the locals, learn some french before you go, and don't trash the place. Quebec is wonderful, the Gaspesie peninsula is wild, and this trail deserves only the best.

I hope you enjoy this lost footage video series from the not so well known IAT / SIA! My first thru hike in 2016. I was the only person to hike the 725 miles that year, and even today I still don't think it's all that popular, but definitely worth sharing! If I were to offer any advice to someone looking to hike this trail... learn some french, and respect the locals!

Wow! So glad I stumbled upon this...my wife and I when first married spent our yearly summer vacations exploring maritime Canada - Newfoundland, NewBrunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, ...starting out along the Gaspe Peninsula brought back a lot of memories for us...we found the scenery outstanding and often breathtaking...it often felt like we were in a National Geographic special as we traveled and explored the back roads. Looking forward to your next installments.

Hey Man! This is what I’m talking about!!! I love the message to future Jupiter, how awesome to have that. That refuge was legit! It reminded me of some of the shelters Chica and Sunset saw on the Ice Age age trail. So nice of the trail designers to build and maintain it. Your footage looks amazing for being 5 years old but to be totally honest I would watch anything you create. What you share with us is so amazingly beautiful and humble and real and always wickedly inspirational. Thank you for part 1. I can’t wait to see more! 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. -Grateful

I hiked the Quebec section of the IAT this summer (2021). Many more people this year than when you hiked it, I probably met 100 hikers while I was doing the trail. Compared to some US trails that's not a lot of people but in Quebec that's a busy trail. It hasn't changed that much, except there is now a map available in Farout (Guthook) so that make navigation much easier. The trail quality is very unequal, going from horrendous to super well maintained. I'm not a super fast hiker but I struggled to maintain 10 miles / 15 km per day in the rough sections. One of the thing that is different about this trail is how you go through so many ecosystems in a short distance: from the Gulf of St-Lawrence to the rugged mountains of the Parc de la Gaspésie and the Réserve de Matane and back to the farming country of the Avignon section.

This was so much fun to watch. How was it for you looking back into this time capsule of yourself? Oh wow it was weird in some ways but really cool in others. I am 30 now, while at the time I was 23 i think. Young and lacking in respect in minor ways, or experience in other ways. Nothing ever big, just with how I spoke was interesting to hear. It was cool though to see how much blind ambition and resolve I had when it came to completing this trail. The more adversity the better, injury, lack of money, not knowing what I was doing. I had known quite a bit and was prepared but at the same time was learning everything as I went and just kind of squeaking my way through.

That kind of solitude is rarely possible on the AT in the US these days. People everywhere in most places. I like the idea of experiencing wildness without too many people. Don't get me wrong, I am not a misanthrope; however, I am choosy about the company I keep. "In wildness is the preservation of the world." Henry D. Thoreau

I think many would be surprised by how much solitude can be found on the AT during a late season SOBO thru hike. I personally barely saw anyone south of new hampshire, and a friend who just completed the trail this year said in 120 days she didn't see a single other southbounder!

It's been quite a bit more popular since the pandemic actually. Many Canadians that normally go to the US for thru hikes decided to stay and hike local trails. I hiked it in September, and judging by the logbooks and what I heard there were about 30-50 thru hikers of the gaspésie section. Most hike it in July, so when I went in September I only encountered 3 thru hikers, all going the opposite direction.

You likely learned this en route...when in areas where English is not the primary language, just attempting the language will get you a long way. Especially w/the French. Many French speaking folks don't mind speaking English (rarely poor, typically excellent English) if you are willing to 'embarrass' yourself by displaying your poor French skills, first. Also, the more you hear it and attempt it, the easier it is to understand w/out even really trying. Should be an interesting journey. I've always wanted to visit the starting point up there.
