Sara, I'm a former Trucker. 44 years of trucking is a lot of hands on real world "street smart" experiences. Anyone out traveling & sleeping in their vehicles is a potential target for a cacophony of unsavory characters. You must always be aware of your surroundings. A good dog such as a Boxer, a Pit or a German Shepherd is always an excellent early warning asset. Your safest bet is to never communicate with any intruders and leave the area immediately.

I'm sure you've taken more precautions now, and I don't know your situation, but I never EVER let people know I'm a solo female when I'm traveling, especially in parking lots or free campgrounds. I keep my windows covered, and I eat and take care of business other places and pull into where I'm staying after dark with a hood on, no lights, and go straight to bed. I recommend this for all solo female travelers.

@@milotorres6894 I think you greatly misunderstand the nature of addiction. Guys like this are not the norm, but the longer we keep proper treatment for it out of the reach of most Americans, then expect to see more and more. A lot of this has to do with Regan closing all the asylums in the 80's too, and the remnant's of the CIA's crack epidemic; not to mention their and other alphabet agencies complicit behavior with starting a war directly related to (among other things, obviously) acquiring and VERY violently guarding (not burning or anything ;))the world's largest collection of poppy fields. Wonder where all that goes - how it gets all the way up to Mexico so easily? Guess we'll never know! But yes, sure. This is the addicts' fault entirely. Let's just forget about all the countries that have adequate social programs and decriminalized drugs & have had their meth and heroin abuse drop to almost nothing for the first time in a long, long time. So stop it, that is not very love and light to be so cruelly judgmental. Very "low vibration" of you, Milo. Most addicts are suffering immensely, lost, and broken inside. A lot of this is a MENTAL HEALTH epidemic. Many have lived through childhoods of extreme abuse, rape, watching people die, being tortured by partners or caretakers who seemed trustworthy.. some were trafficked and forced into addiction by pimps or "boyfriends"/"girlfriends" etc. So please rethink your heartless stance before responding, if you do so at all. I don't wanna hear any bullshit where you try to justify such awful words. You're the selfish and ignorant one if you cannot, at the very least, sympathize with them. They are human beings worthy of healing and respect.

In my first week of mobile dwelling I've had this happen to me 3 times... In the middle of the night. All 3 times, my dog (shepard mix) was on point ready, willing and trying to destroy the "visitors".... Meanwhile my other dog (pitmix) kept me all snuggly and and warm in bed.. Of coarse she too would "go to work" if need be but so far she just gives a lil grawl... First time was scarry waking up to fierce attack barking, snarling and digging at window to get em... For the record, I'm a 51yr old male and this is not my first "mobile dwelling" adventure... But it is my first time with dogs :) So far, I highly recommend k9 road companions...

@@Royalsprincess1 Excellent point! I know, late to the party, but, you make a VERY good point. Once I arrived at a friends place in rural Oregon to late at night to wake them. So I jumped in the back of my trucks camper shell with raised bed and storage underneath to sleep. Just before dawn, I heard a screaming mountain lion, then sat up and watched it pull a full sized deer up the tree next to me. A short time later it marked everything around the tree. I tried to wait him(?) out, but it was not gong anywhere. Fortunately I had purchased the optional 3 panel slider window to the cab, and was able to wiggle through and leave. I also carry a super powerful 12v spot light for finding campsites after dark, but never thought of putting it in some ones face before, great idea! Another tip is to know your route away from your chosen night park-up, towards assistance (township, police, fire station, hospital etc). Park with clear sight of the exit and know which way to turn from the exit. At night, you may be disoriented and drive away from assistance without this pre-planning. Also, always park so you can drive away without reversing, and leave enough space behind you so that if someone tries to block your exit, you can reverse a little to gain a better angle to get round them. Pre-planning is the key.

No one with any sense and common decency approaches another's tent, camp ground, camper, etc. unless invited. He had bad intentions. He deserves to have a life changing experience very soon. Why do people ever question whether they should speak or show the truth? Whether it involves morons, meth heads, abusive law enforcement. Not exposing such things encourages them to continue. Learning from others, experience, is always helpful. This video will make others take safety and security seriously.

It's all about how you carry yourself and what you look like. I'm a man who is also a weight lifter. I was raised in the hood so I have street smarts. Nobody even dares to try to mess with me in all my years of car life. I've even slept in the worst areas of big cities with zero problems at all People who do these things look for easy licks. Meaning someone who looks small, weak, has no street smarts, aren't from the area, etc. This man probably saw her way before he did this. He made the choice that she would be the person because she would be the easiest target. I know it's way more dangerous being a woman but there are still more precautions she can do to minimize this happening. Never ever tell people you're alone, any conversation she has with any man anywhere she should mention she's there with her boyfriend. She shouldn't be overly nice to strangers because that would be a sign of weakness to them. If she goes to a place and gets a shady feeling she should go somewhere else. Van life isn't dangerous nor scary. You have a larger chance of someone trying to break into your home than what happened to her. Most people in this country are nice and don't want any trouble, don't let the internet and TV make you think the world is full of bad people. It's not like that out here

Yeah, this guy wasn't harmless. He scoped out the situation and then aggressively knocked like he was the police and had every right to do so. Wanted to get a look at you and then got angry when he saw that you were recording or taking a picture of him. He even acted all innocent and friendly as you drove away, like, nothing to see here. So glad you keep all your doors locked and didn't fall for the fake police knock or the fake story to try to get you to open a door. I live in a sticks and bricks and you best believe my doors are locked at all times. If someone knocks, I never open it unless I know them. Otherwise talking through the door is as far as they get and telling them to leave, not interested, don't have any or I'm calling the police, whatever to get them to leave. At least in a van you can drive away. Very good call on your part.

I saw a video where a lady used a ratchet strap thru her driver and passenger door handles so the doors couldn't be opened from the outside - a similar arrangement could be devised for side and rear doors as well. Still disturbing and frightening - but you'd have felt more secure knowing the doors can't be opened from the outside - well, unless they wanted to make a huge scene of busting out glass - nothings foolproof

On top of the knives and pepper spray, you might consider installing a very loud alarm and strobing lights that you can trigger to scare people like that away. That person can be as drunk or as high as they want, but once the sound pierces their ears and the lights threatens to draw even further attention, they're going to leave.

How about honking your horn and keep honking until the jerk leaves.... I had a similar experience in AZ. I was parked off a road that was not well travelled but meant for RVs, vans, etc. it was pitch black outside and the wind was blowing so I could barely hear the knocking on my van. A man yelled that he wanted to use my cell phone. I didn’t look out I just jumped in the drivers seat and tore out of there! I couldn’t see him as I drove away but I assumed he wasn’t going to follow me. I was more annoyed than angry that someone had been watching me (I am not young like you) and thought I was dumb enough to open my home to a stranger! Thanks for letting me vent! I haven’t talked about this except to my friends. They were afraid for me but I’m thankful I can drive away from a bad situation. Unfortunately women have to be vigilant at all times when they are traveling alone. Take care of you! 💕

@@nancydaley3701 Sure, that could work, but I'm thinking of something much louder and persistent that doesn't require manually pushing. If you're constantly hitting the horn that's only so loud and may give the intruder reason to think you're panicking b/c your vulnerable. An immediate, piercing sound and lights that can go on for 10, 20, 30 minutes while you otherwise prepare yourself sounds better to me. She just has to do her research and find the absolute loudest thing on the market. Maybe even tie it to an affordable laser triggered security system.

@@christiericci6209 She has something like that. I'm mostly thinking about things she can do to avoid physical engagement, period, which should be a last resort. Besides, pepper or bear spray fired from the inside of a vehicle may be more of a danger for her than someone trying to get in. If it comes down to using that then she's probably in a bad position. Just get them away from the vehicle and buy time to call the cops. That should be the focus before relying on the notion that she can physically defend herself against one or more intruders.

Please put you some extra inside locks on your doors. We also have cow bells on our doors so if anyone messes with them at all the bells ring really loud. Get you some solar motion detector lights for the outside of your van. They just stick on or you can permanently attach. You can also get a night motion sirens. Put 1 of them on each side inside of your windshield. Even behind your curtains facing outside on each side. And traveling by yourself....Please get yourself your CWL (Consealed Weapons License...Permit in some areas) and a small pistol. You will most likely never use it but it is there. Our Camper Van is like a fortress when we go to bed at night and we are much older adults. We recently went to a local State Park near our home for a couple of nights....first night there we had a wondering man. I could hardly dose off when through the blinds came a bright light like a spotlight. He must have been shinning it as he was walking up. About that time the solar lights came on and our night camera with alarm went off. It woke up the people on each side of us and the gentleman next door ran out and tackled the guy. We found out he had been snooping around camp sights for a couple of nights. We had no cell service but I had a 2 way radio...called my daughter...she called the Park Ranger and the Police. His parents said they didn't know he had been going out after they went to bed. The guy on the other side called BS as he had seen them outside when he walked away from their camp sight and went to bed before the 20 yr old male could return. They did arrest him and threw his parents out of the Park. After the Ranger and Police left the people around us wanted to look at our alarm setup...solar motion lights especially. The 2nd night was a dream.

Newly Updated Safety Suggestions; I just happened to see your channel, and others similar channels recently, and I think that you, and others sharing their actual reality, and some have expressed some of the up, and down sides to van, RV, or vehicle living. I believe that it is very helpful, and beneficial to others who may be thinking about this type of living without actually thinking through, about the some of the realistic problems that could occur with vehicle or van living etc... People need to know what up sides there are, as well as some of the down sides of vehicle living. I believe this channel, and other channels have been informative to others, including myself. Although, I am NOT living in a vehicle or anything like this. I feel that you , and others KZfaqrs sharing this with your viewers will be very helpful. I wish you ALL the Best with your traveling endeavors. I shared this with another traveler as I watched their KZfaq channel for the first time, as yours, and I shared with them this information that may be helpful to you as well to others. Therefore, I would also like to suggest a few Safety tips, and items that may help you, or others in your viewing audience. Although, you may have knowledge of this already, I am not sure, so I hope this will be helpful to you, others or someone. *Keep a Extra working cellphone with you or in your vehicle. You can purchase inexpensive phone with a very low monthly price between 25, 35, 45, dollars a month with unlimited data and text, and some have Nationwide coverage Do your research for the best fit for you Carry Several Extra portable phone chargers, and cables. Consider theses items: *Placing Mounted Dashboard camera (Front) and (rear) possibly. (Dashcameras) With (interior view options) Adjustable view angles for privacy if needed. *Mini portable power charging station. I have also seen outdoor portable solar powered power stations, that can be recharged from sunlight this may be very useful to have, to power your devices. *Invest in a Cellular signal booster for outdoor use, and camping situations to boost or amplify your cell signal and reception. Research to see what you prefer. *Very Inportant: Invest in a SOS distress electronic signal device, this a kind of device can send out a distress signal with your exact location. There are various types of these devices, and including signal that can be used when boating or camping situations. There is also the Satellite communication devices, that can provide SOS emergency signal and GPS, and provide satellite text messaging capabilities anywhere. *Some have emergency Strobe lights SOS signaling with location alerts, and location updates that can be sent to your family, and emergency first responders. Some can be synchronized with your smart watch or phone. You can check online, and on Amazon, research what SOS emergency GPS devices will be a good fit for you. *Mini portable vehicle battery jumper charger *vehicle battery jumper cables *Vehicle Jumper cables *Keep a Fire extinguisher handy Smoke, and Carbon monoxide detectors can be helpful... *Mounted Dashboard camera front and rear possibly. Exterior vehicle cameras Interior vehicle cameras *Flashlights or pluggin spotlights *Portable spotlights, and lanterns Keep a few whistles around with you, and in your vehicle possibly in your vehicle’s center console *A set of long range 2 way radios, walkie talkies, to communicate with others during trips, some have 100 mile radius keep for emergencies. Use your own discretion regarding the use of any weapons. Don’t forget to bring Bear Spray Pepper spray Where is allowed If you own a drone you can use it to survey your area for animals etc. However, Please Be Safe and Beware of your Surroundings. Stay Alert, and Be Safe even when stopping at Rest stops, Truck Stops, and conducting your various tasks. Keep in often contact with your family, friends etc. Although, I just noticed your KZfaq channel, and other similar channels. You seem Very Aware of your surroundings and Alert, and you may be aware of many of these suggestions, however, I Don’t know, so I just posted this anyway to help anyone who may benefit from these suggestions. Keep up with the latest Weather Updates, beware and prepare for unexpected Weather events and conditions. Keep your vehicle gas filled Don’t chance your Safety by running your vehicle fuel or gas too close to Empty. Fill it up anyway, it will save you alot of time, and headache later on. Remember to keep up on routine maintenance, check your tires for wear, keep up with your fluids for your vehicle, like oil levels, washer fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze. Remember Because you are on the road riding for sometimes very long distances, and long periods of time, I would suggest investing in 2 sets of tires, and a spare, the extra set to rotate. Check the mileage ratings on your tires they all very. Conduct visual inspections of your tires often, check for damage, wearing, air pressure, etc Keep a pressure gauge to check your tires pressure and a tire pump. Keep towing insurance to Be Safe if you ever need it. It Doesn’t cost much try to get National coverage if available, or where you will be traveling. Keep Extra financing, and savings for any unexpected issues, vehicle repairs, and overnight stays, in a emergency or if you need to rest indoors. Keep Enjoying Yourself, Keep Enjoying the outdoors, and Nature Just..Please continue to Be Positive, Safe, and Alert.. Wishing Success, Well-being and Happiness You All. God Bless You, and everyone Traveling, or living in their vehicles, Vans, RVs, etc. Please Be Safe... Peace and Wellbeing... I have done the van life, first you parked in the absolute wrong place...if you cannot find a place (often the state parks off seasons and there is a ranger on duty still....allows homeless people who have no place else to go or van life people particularily women ... to park safely as long as they come in after dark (if they don't lock the gates on the one I stayed at for quite a while the ranger was so cool and compassionate to allow people to stay and build fires and even joined in on his rounds at our campfires ... he was a high school teacher during the day and the ranger at night...but thanks to him we are were safe...but the other places are at a hospital... just don't live in the parking lot....the police station is a good safe place...Walmart if there are no weirdos there usually a bunch of motorhomes and their are always people looking out for each other...but never park in a dark empty parking lot... for one your van look like it is easy target for breaking into...thus the knock to see if anyone is inside. I had some scary things happen...really bad things.... out in the Yukon at a remote spot on the side of the road luckily left my german shepard in the truck...drunk indians tried to break in and I had my two small children and on my way to Alaska to bring them up in clean enviorment and I knew there were plenty of jobs and it was as I thought the best experience to have made that choice to leave San Francisco bay area and drive the 4,000 miles with $300 dollars in my pocket to make it ...thought they'd stop me at the Canadian border but damn they didn't...so it must be meant to be and I asked the kids well what shall we do ...they were just little guys but both yelled out with smiles "Keep going mom"... aw damn ... so I did... never looked back and had a wonderful life there and found a good job, a mentor who helped me find a place to live as winter was approaching and how blessed this lady was for my small single parent family..a new apartment for $50 a month on housing where other states there was years waiting list.....and I started a good job....and life was good and my kids as they graduated from high school got a college grant...I was glad I had the strength to even consider leaving everything behind...I had nothing to lose, my family wasn't supportive nor helping me and I just thought I could do better in a place less crowded for the jobs and all I had to do was make it on the small amount of gas money and hope to find gas stations all the way up the Alcan higway....which is another whole story...but please if you ladies are going to do van life alone find safe places...take a weapons course and carry a pistol...but never stay in a dark empty parking lot...find an all night market store if you can. I did my trip in 1974....and everyone thought I was irresponsible or nuts....they didn't when I was eventually able to buy a new house being built and even visited ... and my kids got to grow up in a pristine atmosphere and no crowed class rooms. Always be mindful of your surroundings, especially when your sight seeing. Once my sister was followed home and woke up with a crow bar pulling out her window out. She grabbed the window handle and started screaming bloody murder. The dude fought for about a minute and got scared and jump back over the fence. I had her move in with me the next day. That was a thought that ran through my head watching this, what if that guy had a car and followed her. Not trying to alarm anyone but it's best to have your wits about you at all times. Maybe an idea to get a rear facing cam that you can keep an eye on whilst driving. Wild camping is getting more and more popular there are tons of videos out there that anyone can watch, where they recommend isolated camping spots to others, I'm not going to lie it often makes me nervous especially when it's a solo female. I follow an account who have recently had to change the way they blog their trips and change their routine because of a stalker. There are some sick, screwed up people out there.

You could have called 911 immediately since you were in a city and asked if cops were nearby. If you had a gun I believe it would have been legal to brandish it since it appears not all your windows are covered and he can see you. I’ve heard Asheville has gone downhill in recent years. It’s a good thing you have a van and not a trailer. He was probably just a drunk or druggie. You are right that fear is to be avoided but the important thing that a good effective defense plan helps more than all the meditation in the world.

This is why, as a motherly type, I really worry about girls traveling alone in vans and cars as well as hiking into the woods alone or with a poor beloved dog they’re exposing to a horrible fate along with themselves. There are too many psychos and violent criminals out there. They look for places where they can prey on victims and avoid detection. The drug addict in the city may not be as dangerous as the nice guy on the mountain. Always stay around good people who will stand with you if need be. And don’t even trust a cute young guy or couple if you don’t really know them. Park in the well lit up parking lots of quality hotels as close to the front door as you can get. And get tough with psychos, don’t be polite or converse with them, just tell him to back the fk up or you’ll open fire. And shout like a dude at him while you speed away. Never engage or allow them to get within striking range. I’ve had thousands of psychos (not an exaggeration but actual occasions) come after me in my long life, and I never felt afraid, they angered me and endangered themselves, and I was quick to let them know who the lion was, but in a very calm and subtle way. They got the message.
