The second song I discover from the late Kenny Rogers. Loved this live version, and I understood better thanks to the lyrics. As you can see, I got my cowboy hat, and I'm extremely happy to show it to you :) I need to watch the 5 movies now.

Hi Marie! You're right about the double meaning; he's using gambling as a metaphor for life. ♠️❤️♣️♦️

as someone who has english as a second language you caught the meaning of the song quickly..life is a gamble ..you got to know what to get rid of and what to keep..and the part of the song where he said the best thing you can hope for is to die in your sleep..means you can hope to die peacefully when your time comes..and the cowboy hat looks good on you...Kenny Rogers was such a great artist back in the 80's..he recently passed away...in the last few months

You're right. It's a two-level meaning. On the surface, the Gambler is telling the Narrator how to play Draw Poker. Particularly in an Old West setting, where another player might gun you down if he thought you were cheating or were insulting him. But underneath that, it's advice on living life in general. The first clue is that he says "I can see you're out of aces," which is obviously metaphorical. The Narrator is discouraged, and the Gambler is trying to help him.

Correct its a metaphor for life/and how to play the game. God deals you cards both good and bad, and How you play them effects your life. In poker you can with any kind of hand but you can also lose with any hand. "And somewhere in the darkness The gambler he broke even" he passed away he won /he did not win it was even he felt he did enough good to out way the bad. It is a great song one that I live by. Love your videos keep it up till the next one. Much good vibes from Texas.

You are 100% correct with the life lessons. Life is a gamble, and you need to know what to keep and know what to let go of. Its all up to YOU as to how your life will go, by keeping or letting go of THINGS/People in your life. This song was not just about playing cards. You picked up on that quicker than most. Good for you.

Hey Frenchie!!!! English lesson... LOL So the word Poker, we pronounce with a "Long O"... like when you say OK... so it's pOOOker As to the song... you were absolutely correct in your thinking.. the song is using Poker to teach about life or give advice on how people should live their lives.. so the chorus which is repeated many times can be used as a motto on how to live your life. 1) "You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em" - In life you have to be able to decide when you have a good hand or a bad hand and based on that knowledge, when to keep going forward and working on things, or when to just put those cards down and move onto a different hand, where your odds of success are better. There's an old saying, "it never makes sense to throw good money after bad". This saying has the same connotation. Just because you are vested in something, it doesn't make sense to keep putting more into it, if you know, or are pretty certain, that in the end you're going to lose. Cut your losses and move onto something else. 2) "Know when to walk away and know when to run" - This line has similar implications as the previous but with one major difference, walking away and running away. So here the song is not only saying you have to know what things are good and what are bad, but when things are bad, you can just walk away, but when things are dangerous, to you, your loved ones, your life... sometimes you need to run away as quickly as you can. 3) "You never count your money, when you're sitting at the table, they'll be time enough for counting, when the dealings done" - This line is a pretty simple concept. I don't now if you've ever heard the phrase, "Don't count your chickens before they are hatched" , same principle. While the game is going on, Don't be counting your money, keep your mind in the game. How much money you may or may not have at any given point doesn't really matter, as long as you are still playing. How much you have or expect to get can change from one hand to the next. You never really know how much money you have until the game is over and once the game is over, then you can count all your money. So in life, if you are into something, don't get all excited about whether you are doing good or doing bad, because it really doesn't matter until your out of whatever the game is. Anyway, that's my take on the chorus, I am sure other people might have slightly different interpretations.

Recently on NPR there was a story about a real Texas cowboy who got hired for a job in Russia to teach cattle management, since they were new at it. When he arrived on his first day on the “ ranch “ no one was around, but he could hear a weird ringing noise getting closer. His jaw must have really dropped when the Russian “cowboys” came on bicycles ringing those little handlebar bells to herd the cows !

Great reaction, Marie! Your command of English is growing steadily. You don't miss many words, but have graduated far beyond literal word-for-word translations. You see (or hear) a string of English words, but comprehend the underlying (or hidden) meaning. That means you must be thinking in English -- not simply: hearing English, translating into French, thinking (in French) about the meaning, formulating your response, and then translating the response from French to English. Immediately, you understood that the gambler's words of wisdom are lessons in life, and not just for a card game. I think you once mentioned that you experienced a bad relationship. Using the gambler's advice and thinking back to that unpleasant time, did you "hold 'em" too long? Should you have "fold(ed) 'em" sooner? Did you "walk away" (maybe looking back and hoping he would change and the relationship would spring back to life), or did you know it was time "to run" (clean break)?
@matthewireland1125

"You've got to know when to hold 'me, know when to fold 'em" - learn to pick your battles, which to pursue and which to let go. "Know when to walk away" - learn when to just stop what you are doing. "Know when to run" - recognize when you are in deep trouble and need to get out as fast as you can. This some great life advice whether you are gambling or doing something else completely. Nice observation on the extra meanings in the lyrics.

I saw you do a wonderful "confused puppy face" (tilting your head to the side and looking up to try and understand better) right after Kenny sang this line..... 3:55..... "But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep" a gambler's way of saying he got good advice, an ace being the best card, you wouldn't want to get a little 2 or 3 of hearts for advice, right? the song is another way of saying the old cliche,..... don't count your chickens until they hatch.

It's commendable that you're brave enough to put yourself out there and not afraid to use the language. I used to teach ESL and one of the most difficult things to get across to my students was to not be afraid to speak the language that they are learning. Don't be embarrassed if you make mistakes. It is DEFINATELY a message of Life Lessons in the poker advice in this song. So many of Kenny Rogers songs (as well as country songs in general) have "hidden" messages in them. This is an old man telling a young man that life is about keeping true to what is important while getting rid of anything that keeps you down. So many people complicate life needlessly. The message is "keep it simple".

Dear Marie, like I said before you can call it a Cowgirl hat. The same goes for if you get a pair of boots. They can be called Cowgirl boots instead of Cowboy hat or boots. The message of the song is to watch what the other players do to help know what they have. For example, if a player looks up every time he has a very good poker hand and looks down every time he has a bad hand or just folds before the hand is finished then he will probably always do the same so if you see him look up he probably has a strong hand but if he looks down it is probably a weak poker hand.

The best songs tend to have meaning that is open to interpretation. Life can be thought of as one big gamble and the choices we make will, ultimately, determine the path we take. Knowing when to change the direction we are going in or wether to stay on that path is not easy. You changed the path you were on and, as I understand, you are far more happy 😊. Side note - poker - the 'o' sounds like the 'o' in no. Like your hat, stay safe ☺

One Kenny Rogers song you might want to check out is "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)". It's an older song from when he was with a group called The First Edition. Just an example of how iconic this song was for Kenny Rogers: In the 1990s and 2000s, there was a Major League Baseball pitcher named Kenny Rogers, who was no relation to the singer. He had a good career -- 20 years in the major leagues with 6 different teams -- but because his name was Kenny Rogers, everybody in baseball always called him The Gambler.

So in Poker, you 'ante" to participate in a "hand" of the game. You get cards, and you have a chance to Keep cards "hold em" or discard cards - based on the values of the card. the players bet on their hands, and before the betting you can "fold" - which is to leave the hand I (and forfeiting any money you had in) there are many versions of the game poker.

The hat looks good; the other shirt you wore with it (the black/gray/white plaid shirt) was absolutely *perfect* with it! If you watch lots of Country music videos, and watch to see what shirts are worn by those wearing a cowboy hat ... that'll help you figure out the best kinds. Good reactions to *both* 'Gambler' music videos! You definitely picked-up on the 'extra meaning' of the song ... life (and the various parts of it) is one big gamble, so it's good to learn lessons from The Gambler. Almost every American learns some form of poker at some point in life - there are *so* many different poker games! I learned "Five Card Draw", the basic game. Right now, "Texas Hold 'Em" is one of the most popular versions. Amongst my relatives, the game almost *everybody* learns is "Cribbage". Are you familiar with Cribbage? I *really* like it, although I'm just so-so at playing it! What card game is the most popular/common in France?

The gambler saw he was in a low point in his life, so he used card playing as a metaphor, for advice. Know when to hold or fold them. He was pretty much telling him it was time to walk away from what was troubling him.

I've heard a lot of people from Europe say they don't really get American country music, musically or lyrically. A lot of slang and southern accents. Yes, it's half about poker, and half about life.

It's so cute how you say cowboy. I've noticed that a lot of non americans have this fascination with country, western, and cowboy culture. America is type casted by many as a cowboy country but in reality the vast majority of americans live in metropolitan areas rather than rural/country areas and aren't cowboys or into the cowboy culture.

"The Gambler" is a song written by Don Schlitz and recorded by several artists, most famously by American country music singer Kenny Rogers. Don Schlitz wrote this song in August 1976 when he was 23 years old. The story goes that Kenny had the song but wasn't sure that he wanted to record it. He took it to his friend Willie Nelson and asked him if he would like to record it. Willie told Kenny that he should record it, so Kenny decided that he would release it himself. Kenny was already a big star, but this song made him a household name (5 movies as The Gamble). To this day he is probably the most successful crossover (country to pop) artist ever (maybe Garth would be in that mix). Concerning the message you spoke of, the lyrics can definitely be seen as transcending the game of poker (it's pO-ker with a long "o")---especially "you got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away, know when to run". This same advise also works in the "game" of life. I always love your reactions, Frenchie. And I love the adventure you are on as you embrace this music performed in English. Your skill at interpreting the meaning has grown exponentially since you started your channel. And you are a delightful person, which is why your subscriber numbers continue to grow. Also, you look great in your "cowgirl" hat. 😊💕 P. S.: The "cowboy" era in the U. S. was basically post Civil War(1865) to around 1900, and it was west of the Mississippi river, not just Texas.

Wait, when I was a kid, Kenny was the lead singer of the rock band, “The First Edition”. In the mid 70s, he became a solo country singer. Kenny was a pop singer first, then a country singer (who recorded some pop hits, like Lionel Richie’s “Lady”).

@@jeffstumpf9129 ...and "The First Edition" was founded by Kenny and other former members of the folk singing group The New Christy Minstrels. He was very versatile.

@@jeffstumpf9129 Mike Settle, one of the members of "The First Edition" and "The New Christy Minstrels" was a friend of mine from my home town, Muskogee, OK (yes the same as Merle Haggard's "Okie from Muskogee"). Mike was two grades ahead of me, but his sister was in my class, so I new him well. The band was first called "The First Edition". When Kenny became the force behind their success, they changed the name to "Kenny Rogers and The First Edition. Then Kenny just became too big and left the group to become a solo artist. The rest is history. Kenny recorded 65 albums and sold over 165 million records. He was friends with many pop and country artists, including the Gatlin Brothers. In recognition of his enormous success, in their performances they changed the line in their hit song to, "All the Gold in California" is in a bank in the middle of Beverly Hills in Kenny Rogers name. Also, Kenny and Lionel Richie were very good friends, and Lionel credits Kenny with much of his success because Kenny recorded Lionel's song "Lady". Kind of like what Linda Ronstadt did for The Eagles by recording "Desperado". 😊
