This is all a metaphor for life. Trust your instincts more often. Know when to hold em and fold em. Walk away and run. Life decisions, you know? He was pure genius in his words! The hope is we all have the luck of dying in our sleep.

Should be noted that this was a cover and that Kenny did not write these lyrics.

@@kennet7837 yeah Don Schlitz wrote it, but his version isn't as good as Kenny Rogers who actually made this song famous
@robhollywood6474 жыл бұрын
Also worth noting is Don Schiltz wrote this with Kenny Rogers in mind... And submitted the song to Rogers people.. but it never made it up the good chain far enough for Rogers to hear it. Don released it himself. Rogers producer Larry Butler heard it on the radio and asked Rogers if he had heard the song. He had. After no one else charted with a major hit version, Rogers cut it! Don Schiltz himself considers Rogers version the definitive one!

Yep play the cards your born with, I know a guy who has cerebral palsy, he told me one of the ways how he plays the cards he was dealt. He carries a whole pocket of small change. When he goes to pay for something he counts it out SLOWLY, coin by coin, and he dials up the palsy to the max (his words) usually the cashier gets impatient and annoyed with him half way through and just takes what cash that's on the counter and tells him that's ok your close enough. Way to play your cards! Before you all comment that its wrong for him to use his disability to take advantage of people, well my response; enough people use his disability as a reason to treat him "less than" so use the cards you were dealt and play em the best way you can.

People not old enough to remember him, don’t know that in the 80’s everyone wanted to record & perform duos with him. Great artists from Dolly Parton to Sheena Easton. He successfully crossed over late in his career

It astonishes me how many of the "react to music" people had this go directly over their heads. It's always seemed so obvious to me (that it was a metaphor about life). "I can see you're out of aces." Hell, I think we've all felt like we were out of aces at one point.

Great song, always liked it. The meaning of the lyrics not only apply to gambling, but to life in general. Also, when Kenny sings, And somewhere in the darkness The gambler, he broke even Means the old gambler died in his sleep.
@kimberlinibambini19684 жыл бұрын
A euphemism about life- much deeper meaning the actual gambling of money- “you never count you money while sitting at the table.” Never show your hand- in life- pretty much like, “don’t count your chickens before the hatch.” Good gambling advice, however, applied to living life as a whole- He left KENNY with an Ace.. of wisdom- 💖🤘🏼✌️

This guy was a giant in 70s and 80s and big in 60s and 90s. Everything this guy did for 20 yrs was a gi-normous hit. This song (and Rogers) was so popular, two hugely popular "Gambler" TV movies were made, starring Rogers (yes, he was a good actor). He was the only guy I knew in my 57 yrs who was popular with people from 15 to 75, with massive hits in both country and pop charts - for decades. Try "Ruby, don't take your live to town," next.

Then there is Lucille, yet another sad but great song with a catchy chorus that gets the crowd singing along to it every time. A few of his other old school love songs (besides Lady) is She decorated my life, Through the years, She believes in me, We've got tonight (duet with Sheena Easton), & Don't fall in love with a dreamer (duet with Kim Carnes). Enjoy the journey down this rabbit hole. You won't be disappointed. :-)
