When I saw him in high school at the Oakland Coluseum, what I liked was he didn't have that hard edge of a star. He seemed like a normal guy who suddenly found himself famous and was having fun with it and inviting us to share it. His facial expressions are so honest and unguarded. Love that guy.

Young Lady, I know this was recorded a year ago but, I had to comment and tell you that you heard the Most Underrated Guitar Player in the World! Peter Frampton is in a class all by himself! Unfortunately, Peter is no longer touring because he’s developed a neuromuscular disease that makes it very hard to hold a guitar and to move his fingers! IT’S VERY, VERY SAD! I will always remember him for the Pure Joy on his face while playing his guitar! He’s also a Tremendous Human Being! I have never heard of ANYONE who doesn’t like Peter Frampton!

Frampton Comes Alive was his first Solo album and is still top 10 all time album sales wise.. this was after a stellar career with HUMBLE PIE! considered top ten guitarist of all time. Midnight Special was the late night music show this was recorded from. Burt Sugarman was the brains behind the show. considered the best music show of its time. right up there with American Bandstand and Soul Train.

@@thomasdorsey6197 Good question. I seem to recall Frampton did have a band called Frampton's Camel at some point after he left Humble Pie, but all his solo albums were released under his own name, not the Frampton's Camel name. To the best of my recollection, his albums in the record stores were always under Frampton, not Frampton's Camel. Hope this helps.

I saw him play this live at least 3 times. He was traveling with Ringo Starr, former Beatles' drummer in what he dubbed, "Ringo Starr and His All-Star Band". He had a star-studded band which sometimes varied a little but all three times I saw him, Peter Frampton was his guitarist. What was cool about Ringo's band was that they would perform Ringo's hits but also the hits of the other players as well so it was an amazing concert.

I saw Peter Frampton the summer of 1975. He's not just a fantastic musician, he's a showman. The next year the Frampton Live Album dropped and catapulted him to superstardom. Everyone I knew owned that album and it was all you heard on the radio, except of course Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin. That's considered the best and most listened to classic rock song of all time.

Yah, so, as I'm enjoying watching you enjoying listening to and watching this for the first time, it occurs to me that I was actually watching this live in the moment the first time it was broadcast on the television show The Midnight Special. It was a show that came on Friday nights at midnight, and would feature a handful of the popular bands and singer/songwriters doing live performances such as this. Each band would usually play their most recent song receiving radio airplay, and then would normally do a second song, later in the show. It was a great way for someone such as myself, a teenager living in a village in north central Minnesota with only two and a half television stations available, to actually see live performances of the popular performers.

That thing is called a "talk box" kinda comparable to today's "auto-tune". I think Frampton was the first one I heard with it. But Roger Troutman & Zapp perfected it in the 80s. Check out "Computer Love", "I Wanna Be Your Man" are 2 good slow jams. But he had several club bangers like More Bounce to the Ounce, Heartbreaker, So Ruff So Tuff.

One anecdote, for those of you who don't know the story, is about this paticular Gibson Les Paul he's playing... it was lost in the jungle when the plane with their gear crashed after takeoff. Just do a quick search online, and for me it says a lot for people who love his music. IIRC, when Frampton started with the talk box, he was literally using the same one that Joe Walsh had used. You need to check out some old Joe Walsh. "Rocky Mountain Way" is one where he uses the talk box. I love the era of singing guitars ... where the music coming from the guitars was so melodic it was like a human voice. Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Santana, Peter Frampton, Joe Walsh, and so many others. For me ... what a great time for music! FWIW, "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty is a beautiful song with the same singing quality on both guitar and sax.

You were talking about the voice box. In simple terms this is how it works. There's a box on the floor at the bottom of the mic stand. in that box is a small speaker. When a foot switch is pressed it diverts the sound of the guitar to that speaker. The sound then travels up a plastic hose attached to the mic stand and into the mouth where it can be shaped and change by the guitarist. That sound is picked up by the vocal mic and amplified in the usual way. A simple device, but it takes someone to think of the idea in the first place.

Until recently, Peter Frampton retired from touring because he suffering muscle disease that affects his hands and feet. Peter came out of retirement for iconic pioneering rocker's, Buddy Holly's 85th birthday for Holly's celebration in Lubbock, Texas. Peter's father, Owen Frampton, teacher taught another music icon, David Jones aka David Bowie. There are other musicians uses talk box: David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and Joe Walsh (solo and Eagles).

Peter Frampton concerts had lots of pretty ladies. And he was the prettiest boy. It made things awkward but man was he popular. And great. Still. I hear he's still at it. Great Peter!

I was 20 when Frampton Comes Alive was released. 48 years later and I still go out of my way to listen to the album.

You should check out the other live outdoor performance out this song on KZfaq. It's longer and is from those concerts used for his album. It's even more jawdropping!
