“Frampton Comes Alive!” was the must-have album in 1976. Everyone owned it, it seemed like. Oh, this brings back some sweet, sweet memories of my teenage years! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎤❤️❤️❤️

He was always awesome live. He loved performing and audiences could feel that. They were fun shows to be at. This one has everyone subdued as part of their agreement to be part of the broadcast, where they want participation, but nothing disruptive to hearing the music. Also, a talk box, for a skilled person, isn't that difficult. They just play the notes they'd sing, and then 'sing' as normal with their mouth, *without* pushing air over their vocal chords. That way the guitar sound comes up the tube and replaces our breath and vocal chord vibrations, and then the mouth shapes the sound waves as normal. That said, some people are really good at it, and Frampton, Slash, Joe Walsh and a few others are particularly creative with a talk box. (If you notice, Peter always mouths his solos even when not using the talk box because, like a lot of people when they solo, he plays what he sings in his head.)

Damn, I miss those days. I was so lucky to be a teenager in the 70’s, which, imo, was the best decade of music ever. Peter Frampton was huge… HUGE, when his Frampton Comes Alive album came out. You just don’t hear solos like this anymore.

It's funny how great music and movies can come out the worst economic times. The 70's had a creative explosion in music (yes, even disco), and the movies were incredible. The economy....inflation and stagnation.... Just look at vids of Times Square in the 70's.

The “Talk Box” was similar to a Wha Wha pedal. The plastics tube was inserted in your mouth and the difference in air pressure as you spoke or moved your mouth around would cause a difference in the tone of the guitar sounds. Not too many players really learned to handle it that well, except for Peter Frampton.

Close... it's actually is just a small speaker in the switch unit on the floor that plays the guitar and the sound goes up through the tube and into your mouth. You simply talk or sing while playing and get all of the unique sound of mixing your voice and mouth with the sound of the guitar.

The guitar he’s playing in the video has an interesting story… it’s a custom 1954 Les Paul “Black Beauty” (with three pickups). He absolutely loved that guitar and it’s also on the cover of his “Frampton Comes Alive!” album. He called it “Phenix”. In 1980, a plane carrying the bands equipment crashed and burned in Venezuela, and Peter Frampton thought it was lost forever. But he got an email in 2011, where the guitar showed up in Holland at a guitar repair shop, where the owner recognized it and contacted Mr. Frampton. So 31 years after the guitar went missing- like it’s namesake- the Phenix ‘rose from the ashes’ and was eventually returned to him later. Turns out, some first responders on the scene of the original crash found several guitars and stole them. But he has it back now, and continues to play it today. ❤️👏🏻🎸

We were totally spoiled in the 70s with extremely talented and creative musicians. Midnight Special, In-Concert, and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert brought us so many great concerts right in our living rooms. Even my mom watched with me when I was a teenager and she was 40 years my senior.

WE used to run home on Friday nights to watch "The Midnight Special every week. They would have the top Rock, Blues, Motown R&B artists on every Friday Night at Midnight to 1:30 am. They would even sprinkle in the hot stand-up comics of the day like George Carlin. Steve Martin, and many others from the 70s. It was a great time to be a teen or young adult.

Peter Frampton is an English rock musician, singer, songwriter & producer. He was previously associated with the bands Humble Pie & The Herd. I had his famous 1976 album "Frampton Comes Alive". His biggest hits are "Show Me The Way," "Baby, I Love Your Way," "Do You Feel Like We Do" & "I'm In You". He was famous for using a talk box in live performances.

Voted "The UK Face of 1968" Peter spent his whole career demonstrating he was NOT just a " Pretty Face" and he grew up and went to Art College with David Bowie and Peter's Father taught David Bowie, Art !....They were both born and grew up within 10 miles of me in South East London.....

When Mick Taylor announced he was leaving the Rolling Stones in 1974, the calls went out and the auditions began. Jeff Beck got one, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman pushed Peter Frampton's name. So Peter got one too. The job ended up going to Ronnie Wood. All involved agreed with the decision. The 'rejection' didn't stop Peter's assault on the radio and the charts over the next couple years. So it worked out just fine for Peter too. Loved both your reactions. Bravo!! RNB

Peter Framptom was a fine musician and a "fine!" musician! I was listening to an interview with Peter Frampton after I had lost my sight and my husband stopped and said "who is that?". When I said it was Frampton he said oh wow - I hate to tell you but he is completely bald!". I replied "well, I still love you even though you've lost your hair!". He took me out to dinner...

The talk box is an amazing and simple invention by a country steel guitar player. Frampton saw him using it at Abbey Road in the UK and was so interested that the guy gave him the original prototype. For those who don't know, the guitar sound is routed to a small box with a speaker in it and the guitar is piped up to the users mouth through that tube, allowing them to "voice" the guitar. Simple and ingenious.

Frampton comes alive is on the best live albums ever recorded. That is no joke. This song is one of my all-time classic tunes. Its just that good!! And seeing you guys smile and enjoy this as much as I am right now makes me so happy. Music in the 70s blows away anything nowadays. And look how animated and happy Frampton he’s on stage playing the guitar and just shredding it. And if you didn’t catch it with that voice modulator in his mouth, he says ”I want to f*** you”. Then he has that shit eating grin on his face after he says it. Go back and check it out you’ll see it

This is truly "classic" rock... Peter Frampton was (and still is) an expert in making the guitar sing for itself either with a pick or using the voice box or any other way you cut it. I saw him in 2019 along with Paul Rodgers and Ann Wilson, It was billed as his final tour because he suffers from a rare disease that will hinder his ability to play guitar. He put on a great show and seems like a great guy. He was diagnosed with inclusion body myositis -- incurable inflammatory condition that causes muscles to weaken slowly.

It's basically the sound of a speaker is sent up the hose, so when you put it in your mouth, your mouth becomes a speaker cabinet, which makes it louder, and the mic picks up the echo of the guitar coming out of your mouth. Then you shape your mouth like you would when you speak, but instead of your voice, it's the guitar sound coming out of your mouth. It's using the microphone to amplify the guitar, via a pit stop in your mouth.

I graduated from HS in '76. This song, from Frampton Comes Alive, was the ish, for real. Whether you react to it or not, you have to give a listen. I got to see Frampton on his acoustic tour, a few years back, in Albany, NY. His son opened for him, and I was able to have a conversation with him about his father and his music back then. And what it meant to my generation. Very cool and memorable experience. Nice reaction. Lines on my Face is also a nice song. Peace

Great show, you hit an underrated talent in Peter Frampton, I saw him at least 10 times, he was always around and on huge, multi-band bills. This is a signature song that he did often as an encore or just before. Great guitar player, too, he came from another classic Hard Rock band, Humble Pie. Their Live at the Filmore has Peter on it and is one of the best live albums, ever. Try Don't Need No Doctor, it is a tremendous banger. Enjoy! 🎸

I saw Frampton twice, in '75 and in '76 the two years when his Frampton Comes Alive album ruled the world. His opening act was Gary Wright who had the huge hit 'Dreamweaver.'

Somebody may have already answered your question regarding how the talk box works, but just in case: The “talk box” is a unique effect that allows you to modify an audio signal - most commonly a guitar sound - using the player's mouth as a filter to shape the sound. The talk box itself consists of a box, in which a speaker (often a compression driver) feeds into a plastic tube.

Yes, Joe walsh is also know for using the talk box before Frampton. The early talk boxes were sometimes dangerous and had shattered the teeth of some that used it until in was refined.

The album Frampton Comes Alive was required listening in the late 1970's. It was everywhere for about two and a half years. This performance is slightly different than the album, but carries it's essence. The voice box effect he used is the same type that Joe Perry uses at the beginning of Sweet Emotion for Aerosmith.

I saw Peter Frampton on his farewell tour in 2019 at Madison Square Garden in NYC. He was smiling, great interaction with the crowd, some cool stories, but his singing and guitar playing at 69 yrs of age was nearly flawless. Great, great show.

I was in college in California when this song was released. It was a smoker. It got constant radio air play on all the FM stations in the San Francisco Bay area. Peter used to be with the group Humble Pie before he went solo. They had regional success but when he went solo his career took off especially after this album was released. He is still touring and going strong.

Guys , you can’t imagine how huge this album was. I saw him at Arrowhead Stadium in the summer of 77 with Steve Miller Band and Styx. I was so in love. Saw him four more times between 77 and 2019. Still amazing!

My hubby’s favorite song and singer! He got to see him live and never looked back. We had the most awesome music growing up. This is less than 20yrs after Elvis turned all of the tables upside down. Lots of “Dirty Dianna’s” out there. Cool and composed while he’s on stage.

My sister went to see him when this album came out and I wanted to go so bad. It was an outdoor concert that wasn't far from our house so I sat outside on a blanket, listened and sang along till it ended. Good ol'days with the best music with the most versatile genres of any decade

Frampton is using a guitar effects pedal called a talk box. A talk box is an effects unit that allows musicians to modify the sound of a musical instrument by shaping the frequency content of the sound by applying speech sounds onto the sounds of the instrument. Typically, a talk box directs sound from the instrument into the musician's mouth by means of a plastic tube adjacent to a vocal microphone. The musician controls the modification of the instrument's sound by changing the shape of his/her mouth and "vocalizing" the instrument's output from his/her mouth into a microphone.

Frampton played with Humble Pie for awhile. You would love their tunes, "I Don't Need No Doctor", "30 Days in the Hole", and "Black Coffee". Great band.

He is on tour now!!! 2023 Frampton comes alive , the biggest selling live album of all time. Had 3 number one songs on it, that they played forever on the radio.

The device is called a talk box. What he plays on the guitar is sent through the tube in his mouth and he can shape the sounds with his mouth (make it talk)!

Perfect reaction!!!!! Now from now on you need to listen and see this over and over. This was history forsure! I'm 66 and need to get Framptonized often. Must have watched this video on you tube over 60 times before you reacted to it. Loved how you got so into this. I am also huge Journey, Steve Perry fan also. My favorite music. It touches your soul. You will never be the same. Awesome! The 50's through the 90's were an incredible time to be alive

Midnight Special had ALL the TOP rock stars of all time on the show. Literally, EVERY famous group was on the show and I believe this Frampton performance might be the best one of all. Impossible to say, but I always felt this is the topper. (And, I love seeing these two younger people appreciate the classic rock guitar skill.)

EVERYBODY had this album in 1976. His music and guitar licks hit the radio waves like nothing we had heard before. Still a rocking song. Great reaction watching you two try and figure out what the heck hes doing with his mouth.

If you have never heard the story before, that Gibson Les Paul he's playing was lost in a plane crash. Go see what happened to it. I was 10 when Frampton Comes Alive was released. This song was with me through every trial and tribulation, success and failure. Through the United States, the Pacific, and the Middle East while I served. This song is to be played at my Wake, as it's been that incredible to me. I am so glad you listened....!!!!!!!

My sister had Frampton Comes Alive. It was the pinnacle of Peter Frampton’s career one of the all time greatest albums. I’m 71 and I can still groove to this song. I used to watch The Midnight Special.

I saw Frampton live in concert in 1976 and it's without a doubt one of the very best concerts I ever attended...and I've seen them all, trust me. The whole experience was electrifying. Crowd was so responsive and lots of fun!!

Peter is 1 month older than me! We both turned 72 in March and April! I just play for personal enjoyment, but he plays for everyones enjoyment with his great chops!! on his own level! 👍🎶A master craftsman!!!

I got a chance to see Peter Frampton live in 1994 and it was amazing. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.

Peter Frampton is one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar ! The lady that announced Peter is the great Helen Reddy, who had many hits in the 70’s. He was an early pioneer of the Talk Box, right before Rodger Troutman of Zapp also made it famous a few years later.

In '75 I worked 2 jobs..my night job was cocktail waitress at an Italian restaurant located near the "spaghetti bowl" ( the interstate highway tangle) in Miami... As I came out from my shift..this very song was floating through the air from the stadium just blocks away...I sat my happy butt on the hood of my car as I enjoyed the rest of the concert...great memories...🌿🌿🌿
