About 560 Spaghetti westerns were made during their heyday of the 60s-70s mostly in Spain and Italy (and a few in Germany and the former Yugoslavia). And Shree picked up, indeed Tarantino ripped off sooo much from Spaghetti Westerns.

The man with no name trilogy turned Clint Eastwood into an international superstar. Previous to these movies Clint had been a tv actor mist notably on the show RAWHIDE. SW's were basically the low budget redbox mov8es of their day. They weren't supposed to make much money but SWs exploded in massive popularity around the world

Sergio Leone filmed with European actors and released in countries with various languages. He had everyone speak their native language and then for each country dubbed over actors who spoke a different language. Many people in this movie spoke Italian originally. This is based, vaguely, very vaguely, on a Confederate invasion of Arizona. They were defeated by Union forces and chased back to Texas. There was no river battle.

The post-production dub is important to remember as most people are reacting to the extended edition with the additional scenes (18:11 example) where Eli and Clint sound much older - this is because the extra scenes were never dubbed before being cut, and when found the studio had to ask for fresh dubs 30+ years later. Eli and Clint did so, but a fresh actor had to voice Angel Eyes as Lee van Cleef died in the 80s.

Oh.. now thats a classy classic one this time ! Me, not a true western fan, but there are some great movies out there.. you have to watch it. And this is one of them, specially from a modern perspective. here are so many reasons why The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is considered a masterpiece. TGTBATU is Leone's most experimental film. It was an incredibly interesting decision to combine the classic american western genre with an almost European Avant Garde sensibility that grows more pronounced as the film becomes more epic. Neither Fistful of Dollars nor For a Few Dollars more had this element. Another aspect is the incredible use of Morricone's music which perfectly matches the cinematography/imagery of the film.

It is the final chapter (though chronologically a prequel) of 3 lossely based films centered around the man with no name (Eastwood) and has many of the same actors returning in different roles. The first two films are: For a fistfull of Dollars (inspired by Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo) and For a few Dollars more. While the Good the Bad and the Ugly is the best of the three, they worth a watch. The cultural impact of this film is simply off the charts. When anyone thinks of westerns, that's usually the movie they think about.

Ennio Morricone (composer of the music) and Sergio Leone (director) had a very close work relationship. Morricone sometimes had the music ready even before filming. I heard from actors playing in Leone's last movie (Once Upon a Time in America) that Leone played the movie soundtrack on set from hidden speakers while they acted out the scenes. Possible because faithful to classic Italian movie making all his sound was added in edit. This also made it possible for actors from all over Europe (and further away) who didn't even speak the same languages act in his movies. This may be his most popular western. But I have to recommend his next movie - Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). In my opinion the best western ever. Of course also with music from Ennio Morricone. He composed different themes for all the lead characters that makes you as a viewer know who it's about even when they are not on the screen. A fantastic start of Leone's trilogy. His three last movies.

If you do start watching more Westerns, I'd recommend some of John Ford's films. Personally, I'm not the biggest John Ford fan, but there's no denying his profound influence on the Western genre. And he influenced many of the filmmakers I love from Kurosawa to Satyajit Ray to Peckinpah and Scorsese. Of the many Westerns he made, I'd recommend: Stagecoach (1939), My Darling Clementine (1946), Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), The Searchers (1956) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962).

5:07 Yes, most italian movies back then were dubbed post-sync. That's why you often saw many international actors in a single movies, from different countries (many french and americans, alongside italian actors): the language didn't matter. Good anecdote about that: In 1972 François Truffaut's "La nuit Américaine" ( "Day for Night" in english), that depicts the filming of a movie (best movie of a movie ever, imo) an Italian actress who couldn't remember her parts because she's drunk ask Truffaut if she can "use the numbers, as she do with Federico (Fellini, probably)", - saying random numbers instead of words - to which Truffaut answer that they can't do that in France, they have direct sound... You should react to that movie, it's hilarious and no youtubers did a reaction on it, plus it's rather easy to find a version with english subtitles.

This western is so badass that nobody cares that it's anachronistic. The "Old Wild West" was properly considered to be mostly in the 1870s to the 1880s, while the American Civil War was in the 1st half of the 1860s. Many of the most famous gunslingers were either born out west or moved west after the Civil War. However, there were military actions of the Civil War in the Great Plains down into Texas. This movie though is definitely mixing time periods.

Oh, quick primer on the American Civil War. Lincoln's election in 1860 triggered most of the Southern states i to seceding from the US, from the Union, breaking away to try to form their own country, because they believed Lincoln would end slavery, which was the foundation of the South's economy. Actual war breaks out in 1861, and for the next four years the country see brutal and vicious fighting. I love that the tagline for the movie was "For three men, the Civil War wasn't hell. It was practice."

@@ShreeNation You're very welcome. Oh, and believe it or not, the movie isn't exaggerating very much about the carnage. We still don't have a precise accurate count, but deaths from the war over those four years among soldiers, slaves, and civilians was probably right around one million people. The war got about as many people killed in 4 years as COVID did in three. The difference is the country was a lot smaller then, so the war killed a much larger percentage.

The sparseness of dialouge is purposeful so they could sell the movie to international markets. As well in a lot of the spaghetti westerns the actors were from all over the world so Leone would just have them deliver thier lines in their native lounges and dub them in later according to market.

Hi Shree, Spaghetti Western was a deprecatory term invented by American critics, an allusion to the chiefly Italian creative production (directors, writers, producers) source of the films though in fact the majority were international coproductions between Italian, Spanish, German and sometimes French financiers. One of my favorite movies ever! What’s kinda funny is that despite this nowadays probably being known as the most famous classic western, at the time it came out it was kinda considered a subversive take on the genre. Prior to the popularization of the morally grey protagonists of the spaghetti westerns of the 60s and 70s, most American western heros and bad guys were portrayed as fairly black and white in terms or morality, with very clear cut, righteous good guys who were in stark contrast with the mustache twirling bad guys. Whereas in this film, and other Italian made Spaghetti westerns of the 60s and 70s, even the good guys weren’t necessarily totally righteous, law abiding citizens, like in this movie, blondie, aka “the good” definitely isn’t above using people for his own personal gain and working well outside the law. In fact the title was kinda meant to be ironic considering they’re all (with maybe the exception of angel eyes who’s a pretty clear cut bad guy) fairly morally grey characters. Edit: also yeah half the actors are dubbed because in old Italian movies they would just hire tons of actors who spoke different languages for cheap and just dub them over.

I tried to figure out how much the gold was worth but it's dollar value would be roughly between 3 and 6 million dollars. The gold's value however would definitely be worth more. About in the neighborhood hood of 17 and 21 million dollars. But the real money would be the rarity of a Confederate gold dollar. In which case, the value could even exceed 17 BILLION. But you'd have to sell them in small quantities (5 pieces max) at auction. Otherwise, the mass quantity would depreciate the value for the whole lot.

You can work your way up to it with fistful of dollars , young guns, death train to yuma (russel crow version ), the magnificent 7 ( yul brunner version ) and then after all that. u can watch MY name is Nobody which is a much more light hearted western . but not a real comedy so to speak..

Clint Eastwood's (alright, Sergio Leone's) spaghetti westerns are to Hollywood westerns what Deadpool is to Superhero Movies. John Wayne, the king of westerns, hated Eastwood and his amoral anti-hero.

@@ShreeNation You might like rewatching The Seven Samurai to compare and contrast the films themes and characters. Another pairing is Leone's A Fist Full of Dollars with Kurasawa's Yojimbo. Kurasawa's samurai films had a great impact on the revival of Westerns in the 60s. The genre was largely dead in Hollywood unless someone like John Wayne was starring in it. The Europeans brought anti-heroes like Eastwood's and remarkable villains like Lee Van Cleef's. His performances are terrific in any of his films. The perfect villain, an aura of evil without stereotypical theatrics in his performance.

You asked if severe sunburns can leave lasting damage. It can. Over 30 years ago I worked on a roof for many hours under an angry sun. Even though I wore a T-shirt, my whole back was like a big blister and the skin came away just from touching it, but that healed OK. Back skin is thick, so I guess the damage was only superficial. My ears was another story. The edges of my ears are still weird and wrinkly. Blond people should just stay out of the sun I guess.

You're not counting Back To The Future 3 as your first Western? I know how you feel about the music; before seeing "The Good The Bad and The Ugly", I've heard the theme song being parodied in everything from the Pokemon animated series to Eddie Murphy's standup comedy: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nJyDapyX28mUn30.html Another film starring "the Bad" is "Escape From New York". The shooting under the table scene made an appearance in the viral hit "Star Wars Minus Star Wars" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y82Ffrxz2Jy4aJc.html

The Ugly (Eli Wallach) is impossible to genuinely dislike despite all the terrible things he's done because he's like a little child stealing sweets from a jar, blaming others and being rubbish at lying. And following the important scene at the monastery with his brother you do feel more sympathetic towards him - it's not that he improves as a person (that's never going to happen!) - but afterwards you do sort of care about what happens to him..
