I am looking to pickup one of these DAS units. For me personally I'll be attaching this DAS to my Raspberry PI 5 with USB 3.1. This will allow me to run OpenMediaVault for a simple NAS unit. My Raspberry PI 5 already is a Plex media server which allows me to share all of my movies, tv shows and Pictures. It does music as well, but I pay for AppleMusic for my music needs. Using this as a NAS, I'll be able to confiure TimeMachine on Mac to backup to the DAS over my Wifi. Then my AppleTV devices are able to access all of my shareable media via Plex. It's not as fancy as Synology or other NAS units, but it will get the job done. At a much lower price point.

Sometimes that's what's best. For sure one of these is also WAY better built than a Synology type plasticy NAS. I recon it will do you well 😊🤙

Glad I could help. It's the video I wish I had to buy a DAS instead of a NAS. I am sure there are plenty of people like us who this is more suited to over a NAS. Thanks for watching 😁

@jamesandcamera so if you plugged this into the USB port in a router, it still can't become a NAS is that manner?
@jamesandcamera

@@SidneyJackson great question 🤔 I am not sure. I will give it a try with my limited computer/network knowledge. Is this a normal thing you can do with external hard drives and USB ports on routers?

@@jamesandcamera I would assume so. But then it just 1 main drive I suppose. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Thank you - just what I was looking for. I have a pile of 'not so new ssd`s' which I do not want to throw away and this enclosure should help to continue using them (although my friend said that there are no such enclosures and I only need to use NAS).

Whats the link between using old SSD and NAS? Does not exist? You still need a NAS enclosure to use the SSD and create a NAS drive. A NAS system with old SSD to not throw them away is not the way to build a proper NAS system. You need suitable and reliable storage drives. You do not even need such a big 3.5” enclosure … for SSD I have seen small snd compact ones. The disadvantage of the Yottamaster is that it tuns 24/7 … even after booting down your computer. You must switch it off.

Can I use it just to read and display HDs on the PC screen without using the Raid function?

The unit I have does not have raid function and I use it to view HD and single stream 4k footage no problem 👍

great video liked and subscribed. you should see way above 85 MB/s for those 12+ Tb drives, they're pretty quick! Should be like 200+ MB/s minimum.

Yeah I don't think it's a limitation of the drives. More a limitation in speed of the USB 3 interface. Doing my research for speeds both rated and actual about the cable transfer rate I found those details. From my real world use as well I find it to be accurate for average read and write.
@GanymedeXD
@GanymedeXD 4 ай бұрын
Just average speeds in real life … the advertised speeds you usually do not get with harddisks … only SSD … harddisks being slower … solud enclosure, just does never shuts down … you need the power button.

@@GanymedeXD sounds like you don't like DAS's? So far half a year later from making the video, I am not bothered that I have to turn it on and off when I need it. The only regret is I wish the fan was quieter

I am not sure, I haven't tried it personally. If you can test and plug a USB thumb drive in and access it, I assume this would work the same way 🤔

Before you shut down your pc or disconnect the Yottamaster, do you need to do anything such as software ejection of the attached drives on the Yottamaster so that no data will be lost? I had lost terabytes of data with another DAS one time when I forgot to eject the attached drives when I shut down my pc :(
@jamesandcamera
@jamesandcamera 4 ай бұрын
Use the "Move" function for files to transfer them over to any external storage device. Don't use the "Cut and paste" function. Most data losses are during mid transfer of a cut action when the drive loses power/disconnects unexpectedly. The move function leaves the data at the original location until it has fully completed a clean transfer. In 25+yrs of using external storage a lot I have never lost data. I don't even eject drives ever or do anything fancy. I just wait till my files are fully transfered, then unplug or power down. I have no idea how people manage to lose data unless they are pulling cables mid transfer or have a faulty USD port that drops out on their device.

@@jamesandcamera In my case, there were no file movement activities on the attached drives. The attached drives had been idle and I just forget they were still powered on. The manufacturer instruction was to eject the drives via software using the task bar menu every time before disconnection. I just forgot the attached drives were still powered on. The fact that I shut down the pc led to losing one of the 1 terabyte drives. I thought that is a fatal implementation of the system. Power failure or tripped wire could lead to huge data loss. I do not want to add a UPS to the network just for this. That is why am looking for alternative storage system.

@@PaintedCloudsStudio sounds like a BS excuse from the drive manufacturer. Been hard shutting off or pulling cables from drives for as long as I have had a PC. Zero issues and I don't expect to ever have issues.

Software ejection? Eject drives? It comes without any software. It behaves like any other external harddisk. You plug it in and the 5 drives show up in windows. Its switched on 24/7. Once you shut down the computer you must switch the Yottamaster off if you do not want it running. Disks are hot swappable. No need for drive ejection.

hey there, I'm wondering if this will work with 20TB drives? I know it doesn't say in the specs, but was wondering if anyone knows?
@jamesandcamera
@jamesandcamera 4 ай бұрын
Don't know, best to just work within the listed spec. If you need more than 90TB then maybe you need a server rather than a consumer DAS 😊🤙
