My Fourth Pop Pop (Putt Putt) Boat needs more heat

I ordered some copper tube off eBay and it arrived yesterday so I wanted to make a boiler for a Pop Pop boat. I used a couple of jam jar lids for the actual boiler and used the shortest lengths of copper I could to make the exhaust pipes. I extended them outside the boat using ordinary drinking straws. I used a fruit juice carton (tetrapak) for the boat hull and only cut a fairly small access hatch out hoping that would minimise the impact of the wind in my outdoor boating lake (little pond I made to test these boats). As it happened when I wanted to test it in the 'lake' it was getting too windy and also started raining so I ended up testing it in my bath anyway.
The boat didn't perform very well with a single tea-light burner. It did slightly better with 2 tea-lights but I think it really needs a proper burner burning meths or something similar as it really was not getting hot enough to run effectively. I guess that will be the next stage for the next pop pop boat project.
Or I make the boiler smaller by using just one jam jar lid and some flat plate from a tin, that would halve the internal volume so it should need less heat.
Main Components
-
Fruit Juice carton (tetrapak)
2 small jam jar lids
length of copper pipe
2 drinking straws
Two Part Epoxy Glue
Main Tools
-
Heavy duty soldering iron
Craft knife
In response to some of the comments received since I uploaded this video I suggest that if you want some history on Pop Pop boats you look at this Wikipedia link on the subject en.wikipedia.or... they have been around since at least 1891 when a patent was filed by a Frenchman named Thomas Piot.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Water in the boiler is turned to steam. The steam has a greater volume than the water so it pushes out of the boiler and down the tube. In the tube it cools, condenses and contracts so it is drawn back into the boiler and the process repeats. The action of the steam pushing into the tube pushes the existing water in the tube out the back and that drives the boat forwards. The steam condensing and contracting draws water back into the tube ready for the next push.
If your next question is "why doesn't the boat oscillate backwards and forwards due to this push-pull effect?" try blowing a candle out and then try sucking a candle out and you will see the blow is fairly directional but the suck is not.
If you watch the video closely you can see the water moving in the straw.

I made a pop pop engine out of 2 popping lids like that but they were bigger, I filled it with water and it boiled but barely popped. A peice of solder blew out and I fixed it but then the bottom lid got too hot and deformed. (I was using a heat torch so that's why it got too hot I guess) next time I will use one lid and put a flexible metal on the other side so it's not so big and it doesn't take as much heat to boil as much water and it flexes easier.

8 year old video and I don't remember if I did one at the time showing the soldering of that particular boiler, but I did show the soldering in this one kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kMeGnJNymsjegqM.html a few years later. You will always find more information in my video descriptions.

When I started making pop pop boats I did not have enough heat and my boat could no fit two candles so I took the metal ring thing off and there was a wick holder holding the wick so I jiggled it around and it came out so input the wick connected to the wick holder and put it in the metal container and poured canola oil in and my boat whent very fast and the flame was really hot.

nice build..is there any alternative to the copper tubing sir?
@GrandadIsAnOldMan
@GrandadIsAnOldMan 7 жыл бұрын
If you intend to solder the tubes into the boiler then you are limited to metals that can be soldered, so copper or brass are the most easily used. If you want to use plastic straws and glue I suggest you look in my video description for my pop pop boats playlist to see other examples or just click on the link for DaveHax version which uses glue or Blue-Tac

+Adrian Hansen sorry I don't remember what brand or type of solder it was. I just bought some in the hardware store in the plumbing section. Your problem may be the size of soldering iron you are using. You need a heavy duty soldering iron as it needs to heat the metal enough to allow the solder to flow properly. If you are using one that you normally use for soldering wire then it is not going to be good enough. You probably need an 80 watt or 100 watt soldering iron or use a gas blowtorch.

The boiler is made from thicker metal so the panels do not flex in and out as the water turns to steam and cools again. Many of my "pop pop" boats are silent, there is a link to the playlist along with more information in the video description.
