Matt Lane Fitness Actually, something you said in a previous video struck a chord with me (in a good way). You said the reason you weren’t all that into movies is because you had gotten into fitness and that was a big point of inspiration to me. In a lot of ways I’m more like Holden with my love for movies and such, but I want to get more into fitness and health and you saying that really helped push me in the right direction. I think there is actually a lot about it that holds up really well. Every time I revisit it I'm always astounded by how much actually works about it. Sure the "turn back time" thing is goofy but the big emotional character beats are handled excellently and the movie knows not to take itself too seriously. It realizes it's a superhero movie and that there is always a part of superheroes that is going to be silly. Donner clearly had faith in the source material and was dedicate to telling a good character driven story. (I believe that he frequently used the term 'verisimilitude' when working on the movie.) It's a foundational film adaptation. We don't look back on say, the 1960's Fantastic Four comics by Lee and Kirby and go "well...these are really dated compared to the complex modern narratives that have been told with these characters!" Instead we recognize the achievements of the artists and how their work pushed the medium and the superhero genre forward. All that said, yes I agree that Reeve's and Hackman's performances are brilliant.

That particular scene, with Clark coming into Lois' apartment slouching, his voice high and nasally, and his eyes downcast, before he straightens up, squares his shoulders, looks straight ahead, and lets his voice drop to his natural timbre, is the EMBODIMENT of why people don't think Clark and Superman are the same person. The physical difference that Chris Reeve creates between Clark and Superman in just that scene alone is fantastic, IMO.

One of the more common arguments for the reason no one recognises Clark for superman is there have been celebrities who have entered their own lookalike contests and not end up winning. Another reason being since superman comes out with all his personal information, nobody would care to look into seeing if he has a secret identity. His just superman.

I have always looked at it this way, for me. (not supported by comics, just my thoughts) Whenever he has on his glasses it changes peoples perspective of him, they see him slightly different, not completely just a bit skewed. Also, all reports from his younger days state that Christopher Reeve was an extremely talented actor, on par with Brando or Pacino or Deniro, and was probably on course to be considered among the best ever. The Superman persona unfortunately hampered that, and then of course his injury later on. He and Robin Williams were at Juilliard together and remained great friends throughout their lives. It’s a real tragedy that Reeve’s career was cut so short. I’ve always wondered what he might have been able to do. Edit: why did iPhone autocorrect Reeve to Reece ugh.

No one recognized him, and the one person that did asked where the subway was. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/edyaY7teyZjRf2Q.html You guys also offered up some great explanations, my favorite being the low-level hypnosis Clark has. I've also read that combined with the other things he does, like changing his voice and slouching, the glasses also distort his face a little. Love this series, keep them coming!

I saw this film on opening night in 1978. I was 13, which was a perfect age at which to experience it. I had already been a hardcore comics nerd from the age of six, so I had gone into the movie with a comprehensive knowledge of Superman's history and lore from comics and other media, and that definitely impacted how I perceived the film as opposed to the average moviegoer's take on it. I've seen the film many times since then and even today I find I hold the same opinions on what I enjoy about it. First off, best theme tune fior a hero ever. Bar none. Christopher Reeve could not have been more perfect as Clark/Superman is he tried. He absolutely nailed the character. For its era, the effects were pretty damned good, especially when he was in flight. (FYI, I had a 13-year career in the comics biz, first as a member of the Marvel Bullpen and then as a production artist and editor at DC/Vertigo, so I took the opportunity to ask all of the then-living legends of the field assorted questions about the characters they worked on. According to Curt Swan, arguably THE signature Superman artist for just shy of 30 years, the position of Superman flying as he does with his arms forward and fists clenched is meant to convey his sense of determination and urgency of what he's doing.) Other than that, and this from the perspective of a comics fan, mind you, I was not fond of much else in the film. The campy tone annoyed the crap out of me, especially the portrayal of Lex Luthor. The formidable amoral "brain" to oppose Superman's kindness and brawn was reduced to a hollow buffoon whose goal was real estate domination. Appalling. Nonetheless, no matter the flaws of this and all of the other first wave Superman features, what keeps me coming back is Reeve as Superman. Even in outright garbage like Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for peace, he never gave less than his all.

Glowing suits were retroreflective 3M Scotchlite, which they were already using for the front-projection flying rig (as the material coating the projection surface). They just did it because it looked cool. The suits are lit by a spotlight shining on a beamsplitter just in front of the camera, same setup as in front projection, just using a plain old light and not a projector. The scotchlite is so bright, that it was all they could do to make the actors' faces even visible.

Holden, I watched these with my dad growing up, as well. They hold a special place in my heart. Glad you're just watching the first two. I disagree with watching the Richard Donner cut. He should see what most people have seen and what audiences saw at the time. The Richard Donner cut is more for hard-core fans. I agree that the tone is better in that one. It may work OK if you set up things properly so that he understands the reason the ending is the same in both movies (world turning back). You probably know this, but when preparing to make Spider-Man, Sam Raimi said he watched the first hour and a half of Superman. It was his inspiration. For good reason. There's nary a flaw to be seen. The only things that people could possibly complain about are just things where movie making has improved over time and audiences have changed (especially in sophistication). Christopher Reeve will always be my Superman. And Brandon Routh did as good a job as could be done in Superman Returns. I'm curious why this video is different than your others in terms of showing the reactions. You didn't show any reactions but instead just movie footage.

Good reaction. I think the best explanation of why nobody recognizes Clark as Superman, is that we have to keep in mind that we, as the audience, KNOW that Superman disguises himself as Clark Kent. But people who live in that universe, more than likely never even THINK that Superman would have a secret identity. Why would he? I'm sure they assume that he spends 100% of his time as Superman. So if someone would happen to think that Clark looks vaguely like Superman, they would either dismiss it as being ridiculous, or even if they flat out told Clark how much he looks like Superman, he could easily dismiss it, by saying "Really?! I'm flattered!" or "Yeah, I've heard that before"... ORRRRR... he could be really bold and jokingly say, "Wow... you figured it out. I actually AM Superman."... this probably just get a laugh from whoever he said it to. So yeah, if nobody thinks that Superman would have a secret identity, why would they think that Clark Kent is Superman? Have a great day!

Superman is a beautiful film. It's not just got great cinematography, it also deals with some pretty heavy themes with a refreshing lack of irony. The 70's were a gritty cynical time at the movies until this one.

I saw the thumbnail and was like “No, don’t do it! Leave this movie alone! “ But then I was like “eh, I’m invested, I kind of want to know what others thought about the movie. “ I will say, I’m completely shocked Matt or Jenna didn’t mention the going back in time part as a gripe.

I don't think I've even watched this movie(atleast as an adult) so now that Matt has I'm definitely feeling some type of pressure to buy it so I can check it out. Probably go your route and watching the director's cut of 2. So if you wanna put an affiliate link in the description(something you should definitely do with alot of these movies in case theres other people out there like me) I'll go through your link. Stay safe

The ending of part one was changed because originally one of the missiles was redirected to space where it set up the release of Zod for part 2 so part one and two were both compromises from Dick Donner’s vision. Studio had no faith that a sequel would happen so removed the ‘cliffhanger’ ending.

I’d love to see the reaction to the theatrical version of Superman II. I know folks love the Donner cut, but the Lester version one tells a more complete story of Zod and all.

The glowing of the kryptonian suits is actually rather important. The idea behind the kryptonian technology was that all of krypton was crystal, including their clothing so that’s why their clothing glowed. The physical reason to glowed was that it was made of the same material as a cinema screen so when you show a light on it it just illuminated. Nothing if meant to be campy. The watchword for the production was verisimilitude. Lois isn't stupid, but she's distracted. Watch the Donner cut of II and you'll see what Lois can do when Clark is her focus.

Some DC comic books actually introduced other characters who happen to look just like Clark Kent, so people would confuse them for being Superman secret identity.

When it comes to SUPERMAN II, I agree both cuts are neck and neck. If I could only choose one, I would choose the Donner cut because of Marlon Brando's scenes and the pacing is better, but the overall story is pretty much the same either way.

You should have mentioned how in the place they were filming this, despite posters everywhere of him in superman outfit, advertising the movie, the actor went out in full clark kent getup to get some food and NO ONE RECOGNISED HIM. This is an interesting thing in psychology. People don't notice things hidden in plain sight. No one would imagine that out of all the millions of people in the city, that their friend would actually be superman, so they just dismiss any intrusive thoughts as rediculous. His glasses work because people simply don't see.

Well, well, Well. *THIS IS THE FIRST!* So he liked an actual Superhero movie. And an Timeless iconic one at that. Superman the movie is the same film that helped put the superhero genre on the movie maps. And deserves more than a 7. It's earned a *10!!*
