Stuff I (probably) stole from Wikipedia:
Superman is a fictional superhero. The character was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, and first appeared in the comic book Action Comics #1 (cover-dated June 1938 and published April 18, 1938).[1] The character regularly appears in comic books published by DC Comics, and has been adapted to a number of radio serials, movies, and television shows.
Superman was born on the planet Krypton and was given the name Kal-El at birth. As a baby, his parents sent him to Earth in a small spaceship moments before Krypton was destroyed in a natural cataclysm. His ship landed in the American countryside, near the fictional town of Smallville. He was found and adopted by farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent, who named him Clark Kent. Clark developed various superhuman abilities, such as incredible strength and impervious skin. His foster parents advised him to use his abilities for the benefit of humanity, and he decided to fight crime as a vigilante. To protect his privacy, he changes into a colorful costume and uses the alias "Superman" when fighting crime. Clark Kent resides in the fictional American city of Metropolis, where he works as a journalist for the Daily Planet. Superman's supporting characters include his love interest and fellow journalist Lois Lane, Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen and editor-in-chief Perry White. His most well-known villain is Lex Luthor. Superman is part of the DC Universe, and as such often appears in stories alongside other DC Universe heroes such as Batman and Wonder Woman.
Although Superman was not the first superhero character, he popularized the superhero archetype and defined its conventions. Superheroes are usually judged by how closely they resemble the standard established by Superman. He was the best-selling superhero character in American comic books up until the 1980s.[2]

Superman doesn't need to be modernized. In every generation, there are cynical people. People that contemplate suicide. Contemplate taking a life for the sake of himself, or his family. Children that grow up in an awful family, with a horrible childhood. We belittle each other. Condemn each other for the sake of being negative. Lie. Hide who we really are. Do wrong. Superman is the juxtaposition of that. He always tells you that there is always another way. That no matter the lows, you should never turn to do wrong. You should always be a good thing. A good man. A great Superman

It's always been a myth that Superman belongs to less cynical times. The 70s was a very cynical decade, Vietnam War, Watergate ect made people less trustworthy, one needs to look at the films of its era to see this cynicism reflected in movies like Taxi Driver. Hell Superman was born in the depression on the eve of WW2 far harsher times then we have ever lived through, but Superman is and always has been that beacon of hope, something to strive for.

@@edgardoMurnia reality isn't a one sided dystopia either. I didn't say the world is all sunshine and rainbows, nor did I say that people are irrefutably good. All I did was say that Superman represents a world where good triumphs against the negative odds and that we should TRY to be better. Now, if you have something meaningful to say, please say it in a more comprehensive way. Otherwise, forever hold your piece. The last thing we need is more mindless negativity from cynics
@Vegitodraws

@@edgardoMurnia It is well written. Just because something isn't realistic doesn't make it a poorly written movie. If that's how you judge your media, then you need to seriously reconsider your viewpoint of criticism. It isn't "realistic" that Gotham decided not to blow up the boats in the Dark Knight. Yet that scene is cited as one of the best parts of that movie. Or, even at the end of that movie, with Gotham seeing Harvey as a white knight and Batman being villainized after one action. Then he comes back and is all of a sudden a symbol of hope in The Dark Knight. Realism doesn't make a movie good, nor does it make it bad. If you can buy an 11 foot tall purple alien collecting 6 gems of infinite power while fighting a backyard hodgepodge of aliens and superpowered beings, then Superman 78 should not be much of a stretch for you.

@@edgardoMurnia fair enough. I can understand you being dissatisfied with the movies portrayal of Superman (motivation wise) and the people at large. I too have not seen the movie in a significant amount of time. However, as a representation of what Superman means as an icon of hope and his do-gooder(ness) as a whole within this movie elevates it for me. There's a video by someone who's name elludes me at the moment that explains why I greatly appreciate this movies interpretation of Superman. It was titled "Save the Cat," I believe. I apologize for attacking the content of your character earlier. I'm just exhausted from comments with similar wording claiming that Superman as a character is pointless or poorly written/concieved while citing the works of Zack Snyder as a "realistic" interpretation of the character because of how edgy it is.

It's amazing how, just like he did in the comics with actions comics 1, Superman is the hero who also started the sucess of super heroes in adaptations such as movies with the Christopher Reeve film, cartoons with the max fleischer cartoon and TV series with George Reeves "Adventures of Superman". He is truly one of the most important super heroes of all.

The time travel scene is easily explained to anyone demanding cynicism. Superman isn't turning the earth backwards. He's flying faster than the speed of light, which causes him to travel backwards in time, and we see the earth move backwards because we are watching him time travel, not because he's literally moving the earth directly.

I kinda find it hypocritical when people say that superman wouldn’t work in today’s cynical world. Personally i think the 70’s was a MUCH more cynical time than today, and the fact that Donner’s superman was a smash hit speaks volumes about superman’s appeal

Superman saves everyone and every generation. He's truth, he's justice, he's more human than many superheroes will actually be. Superman is the backbone of pop culture. He might be a pop culture charecter fiction, but he's inspiration and proof that we in real life can be better people. We can be heroes in our real life stories and do so much good, cause that what's Superman is all about and that's what greatness is all about. Long live Superman ❤️

The turning the world backwards was never meant to be literal. It's Superman flying so fast that he himself is traveling back in time. Once he gets ahead of where he needs to be he moves forward to the moment where he could be there for Lois.

I always just assumed that the earth spinning backwards was just a way of Superman himself traveling back in time (from his POV, and given the less advanced special effects, the earth spinning backwards would be how it looked to travel backwards). Makes the scene make more sense to me (and makes it consistent with other superhero time travel scenes like Flash in ZSJL traveling faster than light to move backwards through time).

In my book the only worthy successor to Christopher Reeves is Brandon Routh. I mean Tom Welling did a fantastic job in Smallville but I’m referring to a successor playing a fully formed Superman, which we never saw Tom Welling as. Henry Cavill did his best and Man of Steel had some interesting ideas, but he just couldn’t embody Superman the same way.

From what I've gathered so far... "SUPERMAN: The Movie" (1978) seems underappreciated by a lot of kids in today's world who are, basically, inundated by live-action feature films based on comic book superheroes ! To simplify... If "SUPERMAN: The Movie" (1978) didn't exist, then EVERY SINGLE SUPERHERO MOVIE that came after it including the entire MCU would not exist today ! In fact, it was "SUPERMAN: The Movie" (1978) that helped make me a big fan of comic book superheroes (in general) to this day ! #Restorethesnyderverse

Superman the movie is still ( alongside the dark knight ) the best superhero film ever made. Its not perfect. The scene where lex Luthor and his team are fiddling with the navy rocket goes on for a little long and the climax will raise a couple of questions for some but still from the fx to the set design to the theme to the cast ( there's no 2 ways about it christopher reeve WAS superman ) just an instant classic and what's great is how much WB have pushed it out over the years. First with the special edition released in 2001 ( my preferred version of the film ) then with the blu Ray release 5 years later ,then the release of the 3hr 8 min tv extended cut in 2017 and then of course the following the year the 4K release . So in 2022 you can enjoy superman the movie in pretty much every version possible .

The funny thing is people tend to think of Superman 78 as a product of the 70s , a bygone era 50 yrs in the past. However the Superman that Donner and Reeve gave us was from a even more bygone era. Reeve's Superman was the late Golden age/ early Silver age version. In the 70s Clark Kent was no longer the meek, mild ,geeky, Milquetoast character. He no longer worked at a newspaper , or even the Daily Planet. Yes the world is jaded today, Cynical, and crazy. But the 70s weren't exactly the good old days. Trump has destroyed normalcy certainly. But this was a decade of Vietnam, Watergate, Civil rights, womens movement, high inflation, stagnation, high crime, energy , gas shortage. The country was extremely cynical of the " American Way". But Donner understood that's EXACTLY why the world needed to have that hero to believe in. Superman IS A HERO. an inspiration of what we can be. It gets lost Today because there are no more heros. Comic book characters are now " complex", " relatable" The movies are more realistic, grounded, and attuned to our current times. The whole reason we go to the movies is to escape reality. It's ok to wish, dream. Superman is not only a Comic tale, it's an American myth. Its our legend, and God figure. Its what we can aspire to become, instead of dragging him down to our level. The country needed a hero. A pick me up. To get us dreaming again.
