Byron Scott, Tracy McGrady and Rachel Nichols of The Jump reopen the conversation around Tim Donaghy and the allegations that he participated in fixing games as an NBA referee. McGrady says that as a player, the scandal validated frustrations with the officials, while Scott says that he was never surprised by the accusations even as a coach.

The NBA was largely fixed between 2000-2010. David Stern needed to fill the void left by the Jordan Bulls dynasty break up. The league went from 1st to 3rd in popularity with the lockout. Gift wrapping championships to the Shaq/Kobe Lakers was a good business and marketing transition. (2002 was obvious). And then it just carried on from there. 2007 Spurs comes to mind. Adam Silver cleaned it up, but there is still plenty of lousy officiating.

@@weneedhim526 if you followed the league for 30 years like I had, you’ll know that it goes in spurts as far as fixing. The 2010s were more honest period then the 2000s. If the 2020s are increasingly fixed, it’s because they’ve lost a significant amount of their viewership. The last honest decade was the 90s, pre-98 lockout.
@caieby2
@caieby2 2 жыл бұрын
@@goodfella2400 I agree with the fixing in spurts theory, and that the 00's were fixed and the 10's were not. But how do you think the 20's have been increasingly fixed? Even from a completely unbiased view, Lakers and Heat steamrolled a bunch of teams that had no will to fight back in the bubble, highly unlikely it was fixed and if it was it'd be to get Giannis Vs LeBron I'd think. Those series in 2020 were all just basketball, minimal ref fuckery. In 2021 injuries were the main issue, and I wouldn't believe the league wanted a Suns vs Bucks matchup, but it's just how it progressed. There's a lot of potential for them to have fixed series over the past 2 years, and letting the Mavs/Grizzlies/Philly/Celtics keep getting bounced is good evidence to me it's not fixed. Way more positive matchups for ratings have been ruined by teams getting bounced in the 1st/2nd round, and you end up with Clippers V Suns WCF in 2021 for example. 00's was blatantly rigged though lmao (same with the 80's even if no one admits it)

@@IblewuponyourfaceIII I disagree. I think you have sour grapes. Clearly, something changed after the ‘98 lockout. And on the heels of Jordan’s retirement, Stern needed to create a new dynasty. Shaq and Kobe were the best option and then it just continued from there. Adam Silver cleaned it up somewhat. Due to all the replay rules, games cannot be fixed the same way as 2000, 2002, 2006-07, etc.

I think some of harden’s calls are ridiculous but a lot of fouls he draws is just based on his play style. He shoots a ton and is extremely aggressive, not to mention the way he extends his arms when driving, it kinder initiates contact on his arms. But yeah, some of his calls he gets are out of this world.

It makes sense too. A lot of people bet on the Rockets to be the 3rd, 2nd, or even 1st seed before the season started. But 20 games later their the 14th seed. Now, to get their money, they gotta make them win somehow. So you give Harden every call and ESPN pushes this story of his "historic run" and how he's an offensive mastermind when it might just be theatrics.

In today's NBA I think that match fixing is still in there. Just watch Luka Doncic plays and how he got fouled, but the refs didn't make a single call, and in the other games James Harden throwing FT for ridiculous foul on him. Smh
@lit452
@lit452 5 жыл бұрын
Don’t hate on luka I watch every game and the truth is at first especially when he would drive and they rooked him and wudn’t call fouls . luka clearly seeks out contact and baits you into fouls just like harden . Most plays when they don’t call foul you most find yourself saying that was foul. The issue is the calls are not consistent if luka step backs and someone jumps into his space he always jumps into them Thing is he did his against Giannas but it was a no call the refs just assumed Giannas is a lockdown defender so luka is flopping? Wtf when someone jumps into as a shooter that’s either a foul or not does not matter who is playing defense that’s the problem with the nba

"The money they're [refs] making from the NBA is not the money they hope to make, so some of them need extra cash." Tim Donaghy has said that he made $275,000/year as an NBA ref. His betting and gambling was never solely about the money. It was about the thrill, the adrenaline rush, the excitement of doing something illegal and getting away with it.
@plainnsimple78
@plainnsimple78 5 жыл бұрын
They won't disclose which exact games he fixed because then the NBA is liable for very high lawsuits from all those people who legally bet on those games. There is such thing as legal gambling, specially in Vegas. So they might say Tim Donaghy fixed games but they will NOT disclose which exact games, cause then a whole lot of people will come after the NBA.
