I've owned, ridden, and been modifying this 2021 Honda CRF300L Rally for over a year now and I am starting to think I'm just about done with my Honda CRF300L Rally build. This bike does pretty much everything and is great from the factory, but it's always worth adding a few mods to increase protection and performance from a motorcycle, and this bike is no exception. I've done quite a few Honda CRF300L mods. Some have worked great and others not so great.

Just took possession of a new 2024 CRF300 Rally. I also have a Tenere 700, so I am one lucky dude! The T7 is too big for me for confident back-road riding, so for that I will be using the 300 Rally. For exploring the world I will use the T7.

Tusk Dsports are 12mm taller than the stock IRC’s, so a 42T rear sprocket upgrade not only makes up for the loss of torque from the taller tire, but it adds a significant amount more of low end torque without compromising any of the top end speed. Mine tops out at 81mph. And the $150 it cost to mail in your ECU to get it tuned for your pipe is worth every penny. Not just for the increase in power, and torque, but the way the power is delivered, is much better, more linear across the entire rev range, and the smoothness of the throttle response, all this was a no brainer for me.

TBH, these small bikes need a 100 or a 110 rear tire. A 120 is typically used on large bore bikes, 450s and up. Honda messed up because now everyone thinks this bike needs a 120 when a 120 is too heavy and wide for this bike. Just my observation.

@@HippieHoller Oh yeah, I totally agree. But I couldn’t find a tire that I like even that matched the stock size , they were all bigger. But now the way I have mine set up, at least I can pop the front wheel off the ground with little effort, so I’m happy. I’ll never go back. In time, I will install the Big Bore kit, then it won’t even matter, ill have my unicorn bike. But for this season, I’m more than excited about how it’s set up than I had it the previous 2 years.

@@HippieHoller I’m running a trakmaster rear and MT16 front. I hated the trakmaster on the road at first but if you air to 19,20 PSI it’s not too bad, just be careful on tight corners and don’t be leaning it over like a street bike. They will wear fast but they’re so cheap I don’t really care

I have a 2023 Rally, also with the Outback Motortek crash bars. Sometimes, you can get around taking the crash bar off, and just loosen the plastics and kind of scootch them out of the way a bit. Definitely an inconvenience, but they do work well.

Nice quick rundown on your bike. I would recommend that for anyone with a Honda 300, the very first upgrade should be the rear shock, followed by the forks. Suspension improves this bike so much and all of the things are details that can come later.

@neil_the_wheel3493
@neil_the_wheel3493 2 ай бұрын
@@DorkintheRoad Yes, it is more expensive, but also makes the biggest improvement to the bike (in my humble opinion). Over time, improved suspension offers more value than any of the other mod so I would still do it before a bunch of smaller upgrades that eat up the same amount of money. Funny how much we end up spending on improving these bargain priced bikes but I find a lot of riding enjoyment in small displacement, light and simple bikes over time and they are so inexpensive to operate that they still end up being a value in the long run. I enjoy riding my Rally 300 over my Africa Twin in almost every riding scenario that is under 65 MPH.

Please ben, swap your ecu for the 550 stock improved 91 octane or stage 1 version if you keep running that exhaust. You will not regret it for throttle feel and responsiveness. It really is worth it and I have watched three friends kick themselves for not doing it sooner. Dino tabs are the solution to fixing occasional lower octane gas while out traveling.

Nice build. Bar bags are so much better than tank bags. Mosko makes a nice one too. You see the benefits of the MT21 on the road. It plants better at high speeds, while not sacrificing anything off road. Yes, you have to change it out frequently. Ditch the crash bars. Its a dirt bike. An entire replacement plastics kit for the CRF is a mere $200... No way a slip on. any slip on adds 15%. Header change, yes, but the slip on does NOTHING except make it louder which most people think makes it faster...It does nothing. Go back to stock or change out the header. Nice build.

DORK! Serious question that you're in a unique position to help with. You're always saying you're on the heavier side of riders, since most journalist riders seem to be 180 plus or much less. Im also a heavier guy having competed in strongman competitions for the 15+ years I spend 2 decades between 295-310 lbs. Im dropping weight, currently 275 lbs, I plan to land somewhere between 250-260 walk around weight. Im looking at a big harley bagger for me and the wife to do long road trips on, and originally I was looking at the very few big adv bikes that could handle 430 lbs of our combined weight, then light gear, basically clothes and rain gear. But she's entertaining getting her own bike! S.p I think I can get away with a mid sized adv for me and gear. I've narrowed it down likely to the Suzuki 800de, t7 and transalp. The latter 2 I know you've put in some quality time on. I know that any of these 3 will be a great bike, but I'm wondering which would be best for adv touring, nothing TOO technical, more like trail riding on quad trails. I love the look of the t7,I want to love it but I'm thinking I'll need to do a custom suspension to optimize ride quality, and I'm not sure that's as much a requirement for the other 2. I don't want to love the honda, but it's growing on me lol just looking for some input from a guy that isn't built like a match stick lol Thanks brother, keep up the great content
@DorkintheRoad
@DorkintheRoad 2 ай бұрын
Transalp or Strom is the best choice if you're going to do a lot of highway. I haven't ridden the 'strom but the Transalp is awesome on the road and will handle all the light ADV you can throw at it. Quad trails are not what I'd consider light ADV, though. No matter what you get it's worth having a suspension guy at least set up the bike for you (sag, preload) but if possible the best move is to have the rear spring replaced with one that's made for your specific weight. It's not cheap but not crazy expensive (probably less than 1k but worth it, IMHO)

You have to ride it, drop it, fix things on it to figure out what mods you want/need. Most mods make the bike better at specific things but you won't be missing out on those until you decide how you want to use the bike. Hope that made sense. I agree with Dork about hand guards, tires and anything to improve your comfort, visibility (mirrors, lights) and overall, build your confidence. Get some real boots with ankle and shin protection and knee pads come in handy too!

I think that crash bars are many times over rated. One of the purposes of the upper fairing on this particular bike at least is to protect the gas tank. So the fairing is ALREADY performing a protective function. So why protect the protection?! Especially on these fairings where the color runs all the way through the piece,and a scratch doesn’t show up very easily. Plus,fairings are tough and flexible and really don’t break that easily. And if they do crack,it certainly doesn’t matter in terms of getting you home! PLUS, the handlebar is normally the first and only thing to make contact with the ground anyway! 🎉
