My diver hunting setup when hunting from shore! I get a lot of questions about my gear and setup hunting divers from shore, so I wanted to show what gear and accessories I use to make my long lines and run them in the bags for the best efficiency when setting the spread. Aside from the decoy setup, a diver hunting setup is the same as any other hunt for puddle ducks or geese. Please put any questions in the comments section, hope you enjoy!

Nice. Subbed. We pretty much do the same thing but use the whole 150' with 25' on each end with 8lb anchors attached. One anchor in the slot, one anchor on the side pouch. And then use 400lb mono with a swivel for the drops instead of gang clip. I'm gonna have to invest in some Tanglefree decoys!
@TooManyHobbies

Thanks!! There’s so many different ways to set them up, honestly anything will work just fine. I found the 75’ is the most versatile for me in our area, but for just layout hunts the 150’ would probably be more ideal. The Tanglefrees have been amazing decoys for me, I love the quality of them, especially the foam fill as they do get shot up lol thanks for watching!!

Nice! I live in the Upper Peninsula of MI. Just getting into big water diver hunting. I don't have a layout. Going to hunt off the end of some rock breakwalls. Hopefully it'll work. Buffies, redheads, bluebills, and goldeneyes are showing up with this cold snap. Subbed ya

@@TooManyHobbies how many deeks should I put out? I think I have 4 dozen. Do I need a Mojo floating bluebill? How close will they cruise the shore?
@TooManyHobbies
@TooManyHobbies 9 ай бұрын
@MrAnimalControl I have always thrown about 4 dozen at the minimum, but you could probably get away with 2 dozen if they’re flying close to shore. They’ll land right with the decoys wherever you put them, they come pretty close to shore in my experience, we’ve done a lot of shore hunting and had them finish right in the middle of the spread more often than not

@@TooManyHobbies absolutely, easy deployment, easy to pack up, and no tangles! Where do you hunt at on erie in ohio? I hunt erie alot in Pa but I'm like an hour North of Pittsburgh. We should definitely hook up and hunt next year. I didn't buy my ohio license this year bc I've had a ton going on and haven't been able to hunt much this year so I figured I'd save the money.

@@TooManyHobbies I use bigger tarred line as my mainline but some of my buddies use the tanglefree line like yours. I think slotted bags are key tho. And yea man! I have two dozen mallards I was going to Paint, should I paint them as redheads to go along with the four dozen bluebills I already have? The area I hunt mainly gets bluebills and some seasons redheads and mottled ducks.

Definitely can’t hurt to do them as redheads, always helps to match the other species in the area!

I'm in Minnesota and don't have lots of big lakes, but do see lots of divers and here we can't use layouts, how many decoys would you recommend? I've seen some groups of ringnecks up to 30-40 but usually get 1-10 ducks coming in
@TooManyHobbies
@TooManyHobbies Жыл бұрын
I’ve heard you guys can’t use layouts, that’s so crazy to me! If you have puddle duck decoys, I would recommend 2 long lines and create a runway down the middle. Then on the outsides of the runway, throw singles and just widen the spread with the singles. For whatever reason, divers love the lines and will land right in that runway, at least here they do!

So for shore hunting, do you use a weight on each end with the lines running perpendicular to the shore? Is there an ideal wind direction to align with?
@TooManyHobbies
@TooManyHobbies Жыл бұрын
Yes weights on both ends, sometimes we’ll run them perpendicular to shore and there’s times we run them parallel. If the birds are skirting the decoys we’ll switch them up and run them parallel. Check out the “5 man bluebill limit” video from last year and that was with them run parallel to shore

Usually the inside lines start at about 20 yards from shore and runs to about 60 yards from shore. Outside lines stagger further out to help them see the decoys better

Any tips on calling divers? I’ve only ever hunted impoundments and timber so divers are new to me. I went last year and called at a bigger group, 30 or so bluebills, and they did come about halfway and then turned around. I’m assuming because I only had 15 decoys. This year I have much more decoys, and I know bigger groups are harder to get to commit. I’m curious about calling though. What type of calls are good for divers? Does a feeder work? Do they make more of a grunting sound? I know not to over call, and am a believer in less is more and decoys doing most of the work. Any calling tips would be appreciated. I have an ABC double reed and an ABC whistle.
@TooManyHobbies
@TooManyHobbies 6 ай бұрын
Honestly, we rarely call at divers. They like the big spreads, spinners, and a good hide. Sometimes well make a diver sound with mallard calls if it seems like they’re not seeing us, but not very often. I would focus more on flagging them or getting a spinner in sight vs calling at them, in my opinion
@BRG13DEAN

@BRG13DEAN Diver flag, it’s basically just a white flag or white and black. You can make them or buy them, I’ll use a snow goose flag from shore or a little white flag in the layout boat
