I don't know what it's like in Oregon but prepare Laura for showing ID if she wants alcohol. I was in New York and Boston with my dad who's in his sixties (I'm thirty three) and in both places we bought wine from a shop and they asked for my AND my dad's ID. In Boston my dad was buying it and I was just standing next to him. He showed his passport but then they asked for mine too as I was clearly with him but I didn't have mine on me. So we couldn't have the wine. I'm a grown up. I have a beard. I have two children. I don't look like a teenager. Still had a great time though.

I totally relate. Although I don't drink, a 5K race in Arlington, Virginia, offered free beer when you showed your race bib after the run. A friend wanted another beer so I walked over and - at age 65 or so - was asked for my ID. I laughingly pointed to my face but quickly took out my ID. I met a couple on the Metro afterward and he - in his mid 50s - had the same experience. I'm not sure why they have tightened the rules unless it's so they treat everyone the same without having the problem of not challenging someone who's 19 who looks 21 and challenging someone who's 25 who looks 19. Whatever. It is indeed strange that the USA has such a problem.
@yomintyfresh
@yomintyfresh Жыл бұрын
The problem is that there are 19-year-olds who insist they're 21 - "What do you mean, I don't look 21? I don't think that guy over there looks 21 either, and you didn't ID him." If you check everyone's ID, that whole interaction is taken out of the equation. About 20 years ago, I worked for a supermarket chain in the southeast in an area with mandatory ID checks for everyone. As cashiers, we were required to enter a date of birth into the register before we could scan any additional items. If we were caught trying to override the date of birth ourselves or making up a birth date, then we were automatically fired. We also had regular, anonymous checks from police officers and employees from other branches of the same supermarket chain. If they witnessed us trying to override the date of birth or making up a birth date, then we were subject to fines from the city. Stores and restaurants caught violating the law twice lost their liquor licenses.

Take her to Powells and Costco. And Taco Time and Chipotle. Take her to Mt St Helens. And then Seattle to ride a ferry on a clear day for Mt Rainier views, or go up the Space Needle. Watch a Seahawks home game? Go to the Pacific coast and enjoy the white noise of a real ocean. Rockaway Beach, grilling oysters on your hotel balcony, or just enjoying local fresh seafood on the Oregon coast. And definitely take her to Council Crest Park in Portland, where you stand on a viewpoint platform and see 5 mountains in the Cascade range all around you, and you can whisper and someone can hear you 20 meters away (magic!).

Hi Nalf - I'm a German living near Hillsboro (Oregon). When my family member come to visit, one of the highlights for them is the Powell bookstore in Portland. They also like the Saturday Market, but that has gone downhill in the last couple of years. A ride out to central Oregon, to see some desert, native shops, etc, was also a big hit. Regardless, your lady will have a good time, there is a lot to do here that us "locals" take for granted. Cheers, Peter

I'm looking forward to the follow up video showing the differences. Take her for a quaint Sunday stroll through downtown Portland (similar to your walks in SH). Also, the food in Germany is so fresh and unprocessed. As an American living in Germany even our children noticed and commented on the difference in flavor of the fruits, vegetables, bread, cereal and candy (the candy isn't loaded with food coloring). The overall quality of the food is much higher in Germany in our experience. The German people are lovely and welcoming, the country is wonderful and rich with history and culture. The quaint / cozy part of Germany (and Europe) with the ability to easily access a wide range of activities and entertainment is also something we really enjoy here. It's so nice that you are able to capture it in such an entertaining way. Keep up the great work Nick!

when my parents, my sister, and my grandmother came to visit me in Georgia i made a special effort to make sure they never had to eat McDonalds, or any other "typical" american fast food. They got to eat at Waffle house for the waffle and pancakes, hash browns smothered and covered, experience. Cracker Barrel for the southern dishes, american diners, etc. they literally did not have a burger one, which totally surprised them. cobbler, turnips, collard greens, fried okra, pulled pork sandwiches, you name it. So my vote is for real american food, corn on the cob, chicken fried steak, some decent mexican food, too. American Pizza as a contrast to what is typical for Germany. Obviously an american flag shaped and colored cake, and so on.

Thanks for your videos NALF, I really like them a lot, although I am german. I think your videos shows some things we don't appreciate enough or forgot about it. For example the walks you do a lot of people in Germany rediscovered in the corona time. In german language we have several words for going on a walk with different focus. "Spaziergang" (take a break, get out for other impressions, nature), "Streifzug" (with a target to discover a specific area), "Schaufensterbummel" (shopping), Wanderung (nature, more sport focus). And of course there are bad things we always do and never thought about them, too.

Places like Starbucks aren't going to give you free refills but used to give you free filtered water. Alcoholic beverages generally are not. Very odd Nick's a Chipotle aficionado LOL - haven't really seen anyone excited about it since they started getting big during the early 00's w/ the McDonald's merger. To me if you're looking for a predictable Tex-Mex option that's not Taco Bell and there's no better options it fits a niche but there's always going to be better mom & pop Latin food restaurants unless you live in the middle of nowhere...

Curious - where's Cody and Speedy? Have I just missed them in a recent video or are they MIA? You'd think they'd have something to say about their adoptive child finally getting a S.O.. 😄 Oh, and to heck with butter pretzels - take her to Voodoo Donuts in Portland! Way better!😉

When you are back in the US, do a comparison between Chipotle and Cafe Rio. Which one is better? I can see her excitement when it comes to food prices. Yesterday I walked to my Smiths Supermarket and got stuff that all fit in my backpack, from cheese to Salami and crackers to chips. It was $86!!!

I’d recommend the drive-thru coffee shop experience (not Starbucks). My sister was in awe at the convenience and quality of the cappuccino to go. I used to really like chipotle too. But in our town, they switched to order in app only then pick up and needless to say..the quality of food has gone down with them not making it right in front of you. We’ve ordered only a couple times since and each time, our food was carelessly thrown together 😕 hopefully that is not the case at every location. Oh yea..while you’re at the grocery store, show Laura the bologna with cheese already in it! It will likely blow her mind, it did mine. Too bad that stuff is not very tasty! Or the PB with jelly swirled into it, same thing 🤯 I’m still not sure if I should call it efficient or lazy.

What!? In-app-only ordering? I remember when Chipotle started, and they offered a free salsa/cilantro bar where you could take as much as you want from all the different salsas. I may have taken too much cilantro cuz they stopped that rather quickly: )

It's so sad that cities in the US are car centered. You can't just take a nice long walk to a not-franchise Café and enjoy a real cappucino...

How would she feel about a road trip down US 101 into the Redwood Empire and perhaps to the Bay Area? Also, maybe visiting the volcanos, extinct and dormant and active, of the Pacific coastal States would be a treat. She might need a visa but I think a quick trip to Vancouver and Victoria would be most impressive. One negative aspect is that the major cities of the USA have much higher crime rates than those of Europe so she may not have the "street sense" that some of us do. You will have to train her.

7:33 _"I have to make some sort of a professional-looking picture, where I (in some sort) do look like an American in Europe ..."_ ➡ At that point, I got *the* stereotype in mind: red basecap, white t-shirt (over a too large belly) with the US-flag or "NASCAR" written on, colorful shorts, white sports-shoes & white socks. Disturbingly, _Family Guy_ appears in front of my internal eye - so the exact opposite of you, the sporty-sleek good-looking smart guy from Oregon :)
