My Girl - Vada (Anna Chlumsky) becomes overwhelmed at the Death and funeral of her best friend Thomas J... He Can't See Without His Glasses
✨Buy or rent the movie NOW ➡️ amzn.to/3GsKRS5
Tomboy Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky) has good reason to be morbid: her mother died giving birth to her, and her father (Dan Aykroyd) operates a funeral service out of their home. The other kids think she's a freak, and it certainly doesn't help that her best friend, Thomas J. Sennett (Macaulay Culkin), is a boy. To make matters worse, Vada is desperately in love with her English teacher, Mr. Bixler (Griffin Dunne). What's an 11-year-old girl to do?

I remember a 7th Heaven episode when Lucy looses her best friend in a car accident and her reaction to it was spot on as well. Though if I remember correctly, Beverly Mitchell, who played Lucy lost her best friend in real life also to a car accident. I don’t believe she was acting completely but it was personal to her.

This entire scene tears me up now just as it did when I was a teenager. Veda lost her best friend. But I feel Shelly came into their lives at just the right time. She helped Harry fall in love again. But also made him realize that he should allow Veda to be a child without laying so many adult responsibilities on her. She also taught Veda about womanhood and that she truly loved her & cared for her. She came into their lives at just the right time.

I don't think Harry made Vada "grow up," or had her do any "adult responsibilities." BUT I do think either he ignored her and he was not paying attention to what was going on in her world. For Harry, as long as she was healthy and alive that was all that was important to him. He lived and died (no pun intended lol) by his funeral parlor business and threw all of his energy into it, semi-ignoring Vada and relying on his mother to take care of her but when she got alzheimer's and his brother Phil can all do so much. Shelley was a maternal figure she needed even though at first NOT wanted, and only wanted her to be a friend. But Shelley fell in love with Harry (obviously), cared for Vada and felt welcomed by Phil and I'm sure Grandmoo would have liked her if her mind was clear NOT suffering from Alzheimer's

@@lionlyons Plys, her father was a funeral director/ mortician. Every time someone died, she would think she had their disease. even the poor guy with prostate cancer. Poor kid. It would be traumatic I would think to live in a funeral home. That big old mansion house, they lived on the top floor. The basement was where they prepared the bodies and the main floor used for viewing rooms and funerals. Godawful to live there. Especially for a child to see death like that nearly every day of her life. No wonder the poor kid had a complex.

It was horrible and I went to the place where it happened and saw all the blood in the snow. Nobody even bothered to cover it up so I did while I was crying my eyes out, just like when Vada was upset because he wasn't wearing his glasses. It was so hard to watch this movie again, as an adult. My son lost his best friend when they were in 3rd grade 😢, very suddenly from a virus. He was with him earlier in the day, same day he died. I remember the bus driver telling me my son was laying on the seat, his head where his friend used to sit next to him, crying to himself in silence. He refused to let any other kids sit with him. And when he would get sick with a typical virus himself, he thought he was going to die so I would sleep with him on the couch. He was somewhat of a hypochondriac growing up not only because of the sudden loss, but because the day his friend died the boy was complaining to my son about cramping in his hands. He replayed that day so many times thinking he could have saved him somehow. The boys fingers were stuck / cramped but they still did their secret handshake before departing that day not knowing it was their last moment together. The school counselor helped my son a little, but looking back I wish I could have done more for him.

I was reacting so, so similarly to Veda. I knew he was gone but I just couldn't stop the crying, and the viewing was also the hardest part in my case, just like for Veda. I also lost another best friend to a shooting at w club, he was one of the bouncers. Didn't fully hit me until the memorial service, and I was a complete wreck. I was 9 when this came out. I went to see it with some of my friends because a few of us had a crush on Mac. We all bawled our eyes out. Yes it kind of wrecked us. You know what else it did? It prepared a couple us for what happened a few years later in high school. We were at a party and a friend of ours ate something she was allergic to. Two of us did CPR until the medics got there. They worked on her for another 10 minutes after we did for almost the same time. They got her to the hospital where she was pronounced. I’ll never forget the look on her mom and grandfather’s faces. You could see the very life drain out of them right then and there. For her friends, the ones who’d been together all those years, we were sort of prepared for what would come next. The part we weren’t prepared for was going back to school and not seeing her sitting between me and my friend Nickole. I don’t think anything could’ve prepared us for that.

This Part always gets me. when I was 9 my dad had to tell me my best friend had passed away. 3:28 to 3:45 so I can totally relate to Vada. it took me a lot of courage to go to my friend and say my final goodbye and then 29 years later my best friend in the world passed away and one of his support workers told me he had passed away. and at his funeral, it took me a lot of courage to walk up to him and say my final goodbye.

@Leanne0531 That's true. I was very sad too but, I guess in some ways, it was Thomas J.'s fault that he died since he kicked the beehive being unknown why he did it whether it was because he wanted to see if the mood ring was under it, or he kicked it to see if the bees were in there, or if he was just bullying them since he came up with the idea to knock the beehive off the tree branch. However, between Thomas J. and Vada's grandmother Gramoo, it should have been Gramoo being the one who passed away instead for one thing, she was very old who had Alzheimer's Disease and she was mostly a troublemaker on the film.

Such a bold movie, especially at the time. It's like it's specifically designed to be upsetting and that hadn't really been explored that much in mainstream media at that point in time. Scary, yes. Disturbing, yes. Upsetting moments in movies, yes, but not like this. This part of the movie IS the movie. It's all anyone thinks about when they hear the name. So I take my hat off to the writers for being so gutsy. Like it or not, it's brave.

I remember watching this movie when I was 10 and had just moved far away from home where my best friend in the whole world lived. He was a boy I had known my whole life because our parents were friends, we grew up together and were inseparable. It was also that first puppy love, and losing him ripped my heart out. This scene in the movie really hurt. We stayed in touch during many years through letters and later sms, emails, but eventually went our separate ways and each got married. Although I love my husband, I feel a part of me died when I moved away because I lost my one true soulmate.

Even years before this film came out, I had a fear of bees. And I *STILL* do to this very day. Every time this scene comes on, I have to take the brace position (cover my face, close my eyes, look away from the TV screen, etc.). Hell, I remember when Animal Planet was showing a documentary of Asian Giant Hornets back in 2020, I noticed what they were talking about, and I could hear Zangief from the 1994 Street Fighter film saying, "QUICK! Change the channel!" in my head. And that I did.

When this movie came out it was marketed towards children. There was no warning that there was strong content that parents should have been warned about in advance, and many children became very frightened and upset when they learned that the Thomas character dies. As a result the distributors of the movie were subsequently forced to add a warning to "My Girl's" opening credits. It really was a wonderful movie though, and served as a launching platform for McCauley Kulkin and Anna Chlumsky's careers.

Definitely will always be heartbreaking. To lose a best friend/possible romantic interest at a young age... In the 1st grade (shortly after this movie came out) I was friends with a girl who I also had a crush on. Whenever she would hug me, my heart melted. Sometimes we'd be rivals and have disagreements, but we were always friends. I can't remember if the last time we spoke, was it a disagreement or me complimenting her? When we were classmates in the 3rd grade, she and her older sister were killed in a vehicle accident. When my mother told me, I was in shock to where my first reaction was "I don't want to go to school tomorrow." I did end up going, and I saw a few of my classmates shedding tears that morning. For some reason, I didn't. I also didn't go to her funeral; maybe it was a mix of me being afraid to go and mom thinking it wasn't a good idea. I think about her from time to time, mainly wondering if her and I would still be friends in this shit world? But yeah, it sucks to lose someone at such a young age. I'm sure no one in the film or watching the film thought Vada was wrong for grieving the way she did.
