The current move toward scientific investigations in word study has produced an increase in the understanding of words, their morphology, etymology, and phonology, but often, the study ends with the investigation of the word. Less often, the study continues into the use of the word in context. Often, students misuse words because they do not have a framework for the way they function in sentences. This session offers a way to introduce learners of various ages to the foundations of English grammar so they can investigate not only the structure of words but the structure of their use.
