Thanks for sharing! I've got a 79' MoFi American Beauty still sealed with hype sticker and original price tag! $14.99! Also just finished Bill's book recently, and learned that Mickey used real crickets during the 8/13/75 One From The Vault show. Always wondered about that.

Hola ! Paz.

I could go all day with ya on this subject... That "One From The Vault" lp is an incredible one to have... Never owned the vinyl... Its only 1 of the 5 or so shows they played in 1975 while they were on hiatus... The Great American Music Hall in San Fran is an old small ornate theatre... It was an invite only show thus the cover art... The best intro ever too.... I will just stop there... Could comment on all of these....

“I will try. I’m not gonna try” Haha! Nice. I’ve got no idea how to pronounce it either. Beautiful collection, Dillon. Those MoFi’s are amazing! Best Dead collection I’ve ever seen. I came across a sealed first press of “American Beauty” on the green WB label with the hype sticker. I had to open it, and I’m glad I did, cuz it sounds killer. I saw Dylan and The Dead in VT in ‘94, and the sound guy introduced me to Jerry! It’s a long story, and I may have been in a psychedelic kinda way at the time. lol. Again, amazing collection, Dillon! Thanks. Amazing collection. I love all the GD records…even “Go To Heaven” which most fellow dead heads hate. I think it has a lot of great songs on it. Sounding a bit like Fleetwood Mac, it’s quite accessible to non deadheads. You also have a lot of non studio albums that I never heard of. I would also recommend “Vintage Dead” recorded in 1966 but released in1970 on Sunflower Label. By some quirk, it’s legal, not a bootleg. It has great Pigpen material and a super version of the song “Dancing in the Street.”

I actually always liked the white Anthem cover more than the original. Guess I'm in a minority on that one LOL! Btw, the remix was done in 1971 (as was Aoxomoxoa) so the early 70's Anthems still had the original cover with the new mix before someone decided on the 1975 cover. Which is great. ;) Hooteroll is fantastic! Wish he'd done more stuff with Wales, right up there with the Legion of Mary stuff.

The back of Mars Hotel (great album, btw) is not a picture of 'monsters' as Dillon says, but portrays the members of the Dead as extraterrestrials (check out Jerry's feet!)- watching tv, presumably in a hotel on Mars. I truly love the artwork- to me it suggests the band, stoned, late at night, decompressing in front of the tv- and who among us hasn't been in that state at some point in their lives? A very emotionally relatable tableau.

So there's a 68 mix, 72 mix, and another between 75-77 for Anthem of the Sun? I was only aware of the 1968 and 1972. Cool that you have the alternate white cover though. I have a 2020 reissue that utilizes the 1972 mix ('Born Cross-Eyed' ends with a power chord in the key of E instead of the fadeout). And, I own the VMP which utilizes the original mix. I vastly prefer the VMP but that could come down to the mastering on that one.

I'm amazed at how much Dead I've wound up getting. I've lucked into mostly early/first pressings in really good shape, including 2 copies of _American Beauty_ and the self-titled. I've more or less just plucked them as they turned up since they're too good to pass up, but I try not to get duplicates so that I don't accidentally end up taking them off the market for people who really want them.

I have all of their albums and then some I'm a huge deadhead and if you hold the American Beauty up to the mirror it says American reality and From the Mars Hotel becomes Ugly Rumors (the crazy backwards writing on the top) "U.S. Blues" had started as "Wave That Flag" before being heavily rewritten. I too try to get all the original records myself it's always nice to have.. ( I'm a little jealous you have two versions of anthem of the Sun the purple and the white.) Wake of the Flood is high up on my list 1 copy I have does not have any writing on the back just the bird it's a lot more Jazzy.. Skull & Roses or as some dead heads called it Skull F*%k Good quality on that live stuff , Unlike Europe 72 the recording I thought it was a bit too low. But I loved the way they played the songs slow.. I love the Truckin' > Epilogue > Prelude> Morning Dew. The Boot-Legs Yes I have a few of those you showed + 400 live cassettes in my closet. Sunshine Daydreams was actually a movie that never got released by the dead! the movie is the concert & then some. Over all Great Video !!!! Happy Spinning

Grateful Dead fans (of which I am one) crack me up. My family actually has a connection to the Dead that I'm sure not many have (mother-in-law worked back stage). Sometimes I see a release and people hoot and holler about how good it is, such as the '74 Portland Memorial Set, and I'm like "what the hell are you talking about?" In that set, the vocals cut out for (I believe) close to a full side of a disc. Fortunately, I got that one free. And a more recent box set from the Wall of Sound era, is recorded at such a low volume I have to basically crank my stereo 3/4 the way up just to hear it. Wall of sound my ass. And look, I really like GD, but I still have yet to hear the same thing as others in terms of the amazingness of some of these so-called "near-perfect shows." Could be, I've never smoked pot.
@noblerecords
@noblerecords 3 жыл бұрын

I agree about some of these release Like the the winterland 73 box set, Lots of things get cut out like Donna's vocals drop out at times & I for get it's been a while. Jerry's or Bob's guitar drops out at 1 point, But people raved about it and said it was the best thing I've heard in years. I searched for two or three years to find a review that really said what it was!! Not Like!! "This is great, the best thing recording I've ever heard, every dead head should own it!!" Thanks for the info on the Wall of Sound recordings I hate when there low!!

That banded Terrapin Station is AWESOME! As is your GD collection as a whole! I've got lots of their albums, but still missing quite a few. Couple of thoughts: Dylan and the Dead - I have an original pressing, IMO its not a "great sounding" record, perhaps your color vinyl version is a better sounding pressing. From the Mars Hotel - One of my favorite Dead albums, but why doesn't anyone mention "Unbroken Chain" when discussing this album? Its one of my favorites. Go to Heaven - IMO worth it for Althea alone.

Do you know the Day of the Dead boxset? A huge boxset, 10LP, with various artists covering the dead. It’s how I got to know the dead actually. Dead records are not so easy to find in Europe.

I just got my first record player a couple weeks ago and I've been watching his videos. But can anyone tell me what it means when a record is MoFi?
@jamatoneblue
@jamatoneblue 3 жыл бұрын
MoFi is short for Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab. It's a record label that produces really high quality pressings.

Dude I resisted the dead for soooo long. I never listened to them because I thought they were just a boring, noodling “jam band” like Phish. I also would see wacky album covers (Like Europe ‘72) and roll my eyes. I waited until I was around 28 before a friend forced “American Beauty” on me and it blew my damn mind. I’ve never had a *red pill* moment from listening to a band for the first time and I can’t believe it took me so long. American Beauty is SUCH a phenomenal album, to say the least. Of course NOW I’m trying to buy all the records and NOW the prices are sky high.

The only Grateful Dead album I think I have is Their first album First UK pressing on Gold Label its a little rough but sounds good and I got it cheap from a record dealers stock at thier house. I never come across Grateful Dead albums in the wild in the UK they are much more uncommon although I'm not looking for them that hard but would buy if I saw them at a good price to listen to them. Don't know their music that well and haven't heard American Beauty but I am into psych so probably would prefer the earlier albums.

@@noblerecords I read that the singer Dennis Keller has been working on new music, his new band is called Fever Tree Risising. Would you interview him? The original guitarist Mike Knust sadly passed away years ago. It was a shame that they broke up in 1970 and never reunited. They had talent with the unique vocals and the great guitar fuzzy sound.
