The Bill Evans “Sunday at the Vanguard” record absolutely kills for the exact reasons you touched on. I love hearing the occasional voices and snippets of conversations that pop up here and there. It really makes the whole vibe and elevates the listening experience. I appreciate your other suggestions too. Grabbed Takin’ Off today and I love it!

As a brazilian collector I'm glad that you put the flavor of brazilian music into your top ten!! I would suggest that you include more brazilian options to your followers. US and Brazil are the two big countries in America that incoporated the african music in our cultures and provide the world with a rich variety of genres, styles, grooves and swing.

Glad you have a Miles album in your list. He is a great favourite of mine. I have over 60 CD’s of Miles plus 40 odd Vinyl Albums, including Kind of Blue on a Columbia 6 spot which I don’t play as I have a further copy of this album. Some thin’ Else is also in my collection, a superb album. Enjoy your videos and I have subscribed.

At the risk of repeating this comment: 10s across the board! I've never seen a vid that got me dead-to-rights, album-by-album. A friend of mine played drums for Mose when he toured the southeast in the 80s and 90s. He told me there is NEVER a straight-ahead backbeat on any Mose track. Listen to Mose now, knowing this, and it's something you can't "unhear." Legend has it that Mose attended Ole Miss for a brief period. He couldn't afford housing, so he slept in a hammock he slung underneath the university's water tower. Apocryphal? Perhaps. But Mose DID play frat parties to pick up chump change.

Mongo Santamaria's cover of "Watermelon Man" was a Top 10 radio hit in 1963, too. Very glad you acknowledge the terrific Horace Parlan, who ought to be better known. (I'd put Barry Harris, Harold Mabern and even Hampton Hawes and Ray Bryant in the same category -- great pianists all.) I love that vintage A&M sound, too -- and everything Sergio Mendes recorded for them with Brazil '66 is fantastic sounding. I'll start looking for "Primal Roots." Thanks for a very enjoyable list!

Oh Mazzy - "Light as a Feather" would have been no. 11 in my "The Ten..."-video. It's SUCH a great album and the tunes are almost like parts of the same oeuvre. And even if I'm normally not into vocal jazz (and prefer an acoustic piano from an electric) here it just works SO great! Damn - I should have expanded my list to 11 😇

Another very enjoyable and thought provoking video. My own go to records are three or four by Charlie Mingus recorded between late fifties to mid sixties, Coltrane's Giant Steps (Mr PC on rotation at the moment). Others would be 'Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath' from 1971 (South African band, based in London), Carla Bley 'Selected Recordings ECM', Trilok Gurtu 'Spellbound' and Ghost-Note 'Swagism'. Oddly, almost bought 'Somethin' Else' yesterday, obviously need to check it out as it sounds right up my street.

I was just about to berate you for the lack of Bird and you pulled it out the bag. The Dials and Savoys are everything you say, but so much more: that palpable sense of ecstasy and freedom and I swear I hear spiritualty too. Bill Evans' 'Explorations' is my most-played jazz record: there are occasions though when I think Scott is far too busy, but it's obviously what Bill wanted so fair play to him. Love the Chet Baker and Mose records. I would have had to include an Andrew Hill and Joe Henderson album in there somewhere. Very intersting and varied selection.

Hey Mazzy, I’m not sure what pressing you have of Something Else but I just recently bought the blue note reissue and I’m sad to report this is absolutely an awful pressing. It’s full of distortion and digital noise especially on side one of the main track, Autumn Leaves. This probably one of the worst sounding pressings I own from blue note records and it’s cut by Keven Gary, the guy that can do no wrong. I’m sure just a pressing issue but wow, this was bad. I’m thinking of playing it safe and just getting a cd copy, what you think?

I do have the Blue Note Classic cut by KG. It’s not a digital cut, so if that what you have, you got a bad one. Mine is good. But also have the Music Matters Jazz ( out of print) which is really good. And the recent MoFi. A DSD cut and it’s fantastic.
