I must admit that when I had piggies, in the beginning, I didn't realise that them being quiet could be a sign of illness. They hide it extremely well.

When I decided to get a new pet after my last dog died ( of old age at 18 ), I said to my partner -- let's get a cage pet. How hard can they be to care for? Hah! More fool I. Now that I have two guinea pigs who are friends, I laugh about that comment every time I drop fifty dollars at the local pet store or clean the cage every day. They are worth it, but they do take a lot of care.

I have a vet that I really like (she has piggies herself) and took my kiddos in to get established with her. Just like we humans should do when we get a new doctor. That way should an emergency happen, they're familiar with you/your guinea pig.

I had an issue with one of our skinny pigs not acting normal. It turned out that a day or 2 before I had to buy some orchard grass because the normal timothy hay we get wasn't available. All the other 11 pigs were fine with this, but turned out this 1 didn't like orchard grass and so she wasn't eating it. I got an emergency small bag of timothy hay and after getting that she went back to normal.

Noticed my son piggy was sitting in corner of cage. Took to vet had middle ear infection. But had a more serious ailment that the vet and spe calisthenics are still sear hing for. All labs and rays are normal.

Depending on the type of illness - Just call for a vet first. You can always cancel if things change. One of the worst things is not getting an appointment if you leave it too late. My sister struggled to get an appointment and the dog was in pain. We did get an appointment eventually but it probably would have been kinder if there was a space for us earlier. could have got

My vet trusts me that i have gone as far as I can without vet school to fix problems, doubling vitamin C when URI symptoms start, giving small doses of pain meds or antibiotics (orbax) to get their system going right before the visit especially if I cant get in to see her fast. Feeling for stones, listening for hitches in breath (I haven't had a situation where I could tell if a heart issue was present but I can tell the breathing parts). checking teeth (I'm just now learning t use a speculum like Saskia uses its a slow learning process.) and for tummy issues starting Benebac or teramycin for eye issues, and starting Critical care soon as weight loss is noticed.

The biggest indicator for my piggies has always been if they don’t come out looking all excited at veggie time. Big red flag.

I also have a 2x1 medcrate i use for travel and quarantine, if I think someone is having pooping issues they stay in the medcrate away from the herd were I can tell if they a pooping or if its a peepee question I do the same thing but they don't get a liner in the medcrate so I can visually see against the chloroplast if its bloody and can take a sample for pee strips I got off amazon. the strips helped to calm my fears for my dog last weekend she had the most foul urine and I grabbed some for the strips and was able to see its most likely a UTI not a kidney issue since it happened over the weekend I was able to keep myself from extreme stress all weekend while waiting for the vet to open. She is fine and the antibiotics are helping but those little urine strips did a lot to let me and the vet know what we were dealing with and penpointed what tests to run in the office. They have helped with piggies having invisible blood in their urine as well.

This is all really good advice. I made an appointment for my 2 year old piggie Rowan because I discovered a lump on her tummy, it was small but over the last week or so it's gotten bigger. So off to my small animal specialist on Wednesday.
