People ask me about headphones pretty consistently, and I can't believe it's dawned on me just now to make a video about it! I don't claim to be a headphone guru, but I know what works for me. These are my preferred headphone models, which may be subject to change if an opportunity to upgrade comes in the near future. What are your favorite headphone models? What model would you use if you could afford it? What models are you curious about? Are headphones your preferred mode of listening?

Headphones don't really change over the years. The HD600's by Sennheiser are the king of neutral sound and have been with us since the 90's. It would take a truly amazing headphone at 1/2 the HD600 price in order to dethrone the HD600s from such a place of respect and admiration.

My Opinion for beginners: (All Under 200) 1. Audio Tecnica ATH-M50X (great closed back headphones with a little more bass but not over powering) 2. Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO (Also a great pair of closed back headphones, flat signal 3. AKG K7XX (open back headphones will leak sound but very cool listening experience. Flat Signal Best deal on Massdrop.) 4. Grado SR80e (open back headphones that won't break the bank only 99 dollars. Great choice.) Stay away from beats by dre because they don't provide a good listening experience. The low end is turned way up and highs and mids are hard to make out. Bose headphones are not bad however you pay a high price for the name as well. Hope this helps.

@averystrangeguy4378 7 жыл бұрын
Jack T I assume you're not replying to me, but I would like to say that I am criticizing your choice of the M50s at the top because the video, therefore presumably your list as well, are discussing listening headphones. I have Audio Technica monitors (admittedly not the M50s) and I love them, but I would not recommend them for the average listener or even a music fanatic, because the flat frequency response makes them sound dull.

For anyone wondering, the Koss PortaPro's mentioned in the video are fantastic. The hardware is extremely durable and ergonomic, and fits snug as fuck on your head without applying uncomfortable pressure. I can literally do sit ups, push ups, jog, etc. without feeling even the slightest nags or slips. Sound wise, they are probably the best for the price, and are a _huge_ step up from any sort of earbud or beats by dre. The bass is comparatively heavy and rich, while balancing perfectly the other sounds (ie. not just overblown, distracting bass). They are likely the best workout headphones; in regards to both efficacy and sound quality. They are the most practical headphone for traveling, whether it be on public transit, foot, etc., as while they are far from the best sounding headphone, it would be uncomfortable and slightly embarrassing to walk around wearing a massive set of cans. For those of you worried about the style, I, as quite a stylish individual have had no issues wearing these, especially since street style is increasingly retro. If you are hesitant to drop an extra $50 on some higher quality headphones, these should be a happy medium, as they will not will they noticeably improve your home listening experience, but will also double as knock around/-workout cans as well.

Music listening cans: Audio-Technica ESW9. My favorite pair of headphones ever. Smooth Lows, detailed Mids and Highs (without then beeing too shimmery or fake sounding). All the minute details and "Ear candies" can be heard here. Designed to be portable but would not recommend travelling with them as they make your ears get hot fast. Casual listening/gaming/homework cans: V-Moda M-100. Very fun to listen on. Passive noise cancellation, big Lows, a considerable step up from the Beats Studios in the same price range. Highs sound a little false and the mids sound a tad scooped, but again not to the same extent as it's competitor. Also the damn thing is built like a tank. Very portable folding design.

m40x is the way to go. The m50x has highs that can kill and a very distorted low end--no mids. m40x still has that "fun sounding" v-shaped response (emphasized treble and bass), just not as over-exaggerated as the m50x's. Same great build and more natural sound for less expense. Get the m40x's--your ears will thank you.
@jameshendermusic

LegitSoloz1 I prefer the flat bass sound on the M50x's, much better for recording.
@LegitSoloz1
@LegitSoloz1 7 жыл бұрын
+James Dallimore I find it fatiguing to listen to the m50x's treble region; on the other hand, the m40x's are far more pleasing to listen to. As for bass, the low-end boost definitely bleeds into the m50x's mid range, distorting the already recessed lower-mids (guitar, male vocals, etc). Most people who have owned both headphones (myself included) do believe the m40x is the better headphone, but... Everyone's ears are different. You could very well be hearing a flat bass response. More power to you for it.

I've had and used my Sennheiser HD 25-1 IIs for about six years now as well and I have no real plans of stopping. Notorious for their treble, anyone who's used them (many people have) can attest to them being great for electronic music and rock music. I like that they're lightweight and very durable. A bit pricier than the AKG 240s, but they also come with more clarity at 80 Ohms. I have thought about high ear buds but I also do not like how they feel. Another nice thing about my HD 25s is in the Wintertime they function as earmuffs as well.

i personally don't like the m50s because they offer nothing to me, i can get the same clarity in a pair of headphones that are half the price (in fact i do, im using sennheiser hd518s) , and the m50s are just boring to me, the bass is barely there, highs and lows are meh, treble is overpowering if you try to replace the pads, (which is why there's a thick piece of foam between the stock pads and your ear). I personally think sennheiser is superior, because you can get a great pair for around 70, they last years, and the sound is perfect (in my opinion)

I have Beats Studio that I bought 3 years ago and I have to say that I don't regret the money I spent on them. I listen to a lot of Metal, Rap and Pop and I love it when the sound is clear and with big bass! I have all my music on my phone too so I use the Neutron application on Android. I can then change the settings on the phone + the sound of the Beats = Just fabulous!

They're definitely plebian headphones, but I have a pair of Skullcandy Aviator 2.0's. Mainly because I got them for nearly half price. The sound is pretty much perfect in my honest opinion. Bass vibrates your ears just right, high sparkly notes reverberate nicely and they don't lose detail. They're also portable enough for me to throw in a big and having them around my neck works pretty well. Oh and they have a replaceable jack. I use them plugged into my hi-fi and with my phone and they're definitely good enough that I can tell that my hi-fi sounds 100x better than my phone so that's good. They fold and go into a nice little leather bag too if you need a bit of portability. Only problems is that one of the ear cushions on mine came out a little warped but it's fine as it feels comfortable, and those said leather ear cushions definitely make your ears sweat on hot days. Also the lining came off the band after about 6 months, but the rest of the unit works perfectly, hell even the wire works fine. If you can get them for super cheap like I did (because they cost about 100 quid, idk what that is in dollars) then check them out.

I'm currently using a pair of audio technica ath m50x's, and I think they sound great. There's a good amount of bass, with plenty of clarity too, they also have pretty good noise isolation. These headphones may be a little pricey, but I'd say it's definitely worth the money.

My headphones are the Shure SRH240A. It has a lot of clarity and overall the sound is very well balanced. However, I find the cable unnecessarily long, so I had to use a rubber band and tie the wires together to reduce the length of the cable while also decreasing the inconvenience it causes.

I use a pair of Sony MDR-CD333 headphones from 1989. There's absolutely NO leather left on the foam, but they still function exceptionally well after all these years, and I've used them regularly for about 6 years after finding them in my dad's record cabinet.

I have porta pros which I've been using 8/10 hours a day for the last couple of years and I couldn't recommend them more to anyone. I didn't have the problem with the foams that he mentions (I still use my original foam) but one downside of them is that since they don't isolate the sound, they are not the best to be used in loudy places.

I'm currently using some HD600s and god do I miss them when I go out. I use RHA MA750i's when I'm out but you're right, they aren't nearly as good. That said, headphones are my preferred way to listen when I look for clarity. If I was in a bigger apartment or listening room in general, then my Monitor Audio Silver 6s with an SBS-2000 would be my go to listening setup. The electrifying sound is hard to give up unless I want that surgical clarity.

I kinda want the Beats sometimes, just to turn the volume up to max and make my fucking ears fly off, becuase the AKG K550 doesnt really do that. The K550 is more quality than quantity (in sound), beacause it feels like my ears cant hear some of the frequencies on higher levels (when theyre this clear) then lets say 60% of the volume-bar. So theyre really just built to hear every sound, instead of (like with the Beats) making your head explode with killer bass and bapps. While the sound is really nice, I kinda wish I'd try them on before I bought them. It's kind of hard to get them to fit perfectly and they actaully feel kinda heavy after 6+ hours on the head. Also, I would recommend you to buy some headphones with a replaceable cable beacuse that shit's a real bitch! I'd actually love some wireless phones the next time. I really hate when the cable get stuck everywhere and kills me and my phones. Not really sure if you got the answear you wanted, but to sum it up: If you love the kind of quality that makes you hear every itty bitty sound in the music - AKG is the shit. - If you "just" want the party/grime/mass of music, with the final touch of feel - AKG just might be wrong for you.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 590 that feel exactly as you described. Feel like clouds on your head. You don't actually feel them at all even after hours of use. They were second hand and worn in and sound great but the mids are a bit muddy compared to the cheaper, weaker but more neutral sounding hd 201. A step up from this in quality are my dads' HD 595 which were quite expensive, but are very uncomfortable for my elephant ears. Open-type over-ear > ear buds or noise cancelling for me.

I got the Sol Republic Tracks on-ear V8 headphones about 8 months ago and these are the best I've used. They're still just as clear, loud, and produce the same sound quality as they did when I took them out of the box. The bass is clear even at the high's unlike the beats which is one oof the reason I chose these over beats. They're virtually indestructible in all honesty and the wire hasn't even given me a single problem yet which is impressive. I use them every day and their reliable and sound great.

Since I started to really passionately listen to music and care about what I'm hearing I've always tried to use the Phillips ear buds. I started out with the "outies" and now I have the "innies" that provide so much more clarity and brings the base of each song to my attention much more, and I always try to get a funky color like purple, pink or yellow. I currently have yellow Phillips "Innie" ear buds and I love them.
