The single most heartbreaking scene is when he finds out that Forrest is his son... and his first reaction is a look of horror that crosses his face as he's momentarily convinced that his son will be slow like him. Throughout the film, he doesn't show that all the bad things get to him. But in that moment we realize that they do, and he's terrified that this child might have to endure the same things he did.

Running was so important in this film. For Forrest, running was to live. running was freedom. For Jenny, running was surviving. She was taught very young that to not get hurt, you run. It's hard unlearn lessons taught by trauma.

Jenny is such a tragic character. We learn how to value ourselves and how to love from our families. She went through life trying recreate old patterns and, in her own way, protect Forest. It took her a long time to learn to value herself. Becoming a mother was probably a big part of that. I've seen this movie a half dozen times and I always react the same as you. Half the time I'm smiling or laughing. The other half I'm crying.

Jenny prayed she was a bird that could fly far, far away. At the end of the movie at their favorite tree where she was buried, birds flew away. So beautifully done. Jenny was trying to escape her past, Forrest embraced his life. It was nice to see that a man who was “slow” took everything he was told literally and it saved him. Running saved him. Great reaction and I subscribed.

It was nice not having to explain why Jenny was the way she was, so many reactors tend to be like oh no that's horrible when they find out how she lives as a child but somehow forget about it when she's an adult like she's just supposed to know how to be 100 percent recovered from that kind of trauma. Truthfully they are far too hard on her character, I related to her though, I didn't have that kind of trauma but I certainly was lost for a while.

I was LITERALLY about to post the identical thing. It actually hurts a bit when people are so quick to admonish Jenny as an adult... kind of makes one realize how little psychology, mental illness in general, is thought of these days. Pun!

Anyone who doesn't understand Jenny's actions in this story must lead blessed lives, because they don't have firsthand experience with the ravages of childhood trauma. It's frustrating how many people demonize her or act like she's stupid. They just don't understand how abuse hardwires the brain. The fact that Jenny turns her life around despite the hell she grew up in proves just how strong she is.

And now you have smiled, cried & laughed to this movie like the rest of us have since 1994. Hanks so much deserved that Oscar! But more than anything, it's the story that gets you. If the world had more Forrest Gumps it would be a LOT better place! Maybe not always the brightest but it would be good, caring & loyal. This is the most important part of this film, I think, the reminder that we all should be more like Forest because that is what really counts. Not how smart or rich you are, you can be successful anyway. One aspect I really like in this film is the unsaid reason why Forest started that years-long running marathon right after Jenny walked out on him. He is not clever enough to understand why himself, he sees it only as that "he felt like running." But the reason why is because he is hurting. He is emotionally & sexually frustrated, he was deeply in love, & she left without saying goodbye or as much as a note. Forrest would never blame her. But if he had been more like most of us he had been angry, maybe even cried. Instead, all that emotional & physical energy had to be channeled somewhere & Forrest channels it the best way he knows how to = running. When he more than 3 years later stops running, that's how long it took for him to get over the fact that he was abandoned. He had so much love to give Jenny but she wouldn't let him. It took him over 3 years of running to channel all that. I just love the symbolism of it. My fav moment though, brilliantly acted by Hanks, is when Forrest has just been told by jenny that they share a son & the first thing Forrest asks is if the boy is smart or not. He is so worried that the boy has no higher IQ than him & therefor must go through life as he has. As much as Forrest is wonderfully naively unaware of so much, & therefore so innocent, he was still always aware that his low IQ was a hinder. Nothing to be ashamed of but I love that he for a few seconds was really scared that he had passed on his own problem to his son. That was so beautiful, the first instinctual reaction was "is my son OK?"
@ollie511
@ollie511 3 жыл бұрын
WOW Imylover! This comment is VERY well articulated, and I agree with everything you said! In the scene where Forrest meets his son for the first time, I also love when Forrest sits down to watch Bert and Ernie on TV with him, and the 2 of them turn their heads in the same way (and at the same time). I also love Gary Sinise's performance as LT. Dan and that character's storyline! Overall, Forrest Gump is such an inspirational movie to me, and I quote it all the time! My brother actually has Autism, which makes me connect with the movie even more (I know Forrest did not have Autism, but him and my brother relate in that they are both disabled). I actually posted a video on my channel in February that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. Aside from matching song lyrics with movie scenes, my intention with the video was to try and create something heart-felt. If you have a few minutes sometime and are interested, here is a link to the video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hdhdpqyas6eyiZs.html If you don't check it out, no worries at all! I won't be offended! I'm right with you, brother. I saw this when it was first released in the theater. Not a dry eye in the theater. The more you think about the movie, the more depth you'll find within the characters and events, and how Forrest goes through each with the simple outlook on life. Sometimes in times of we're all going through now, we all need a good cry to let out all the fear, frustration, depression, anger, feelings of helplessness, and keep plowing ahead to the light at the end of the tunnel with positive enthusiasm that we'll all get through this hopefully wiser.

you are the first reactor to realize that Jenny's childhood abuse had everything to do with why she constantly pushed Forrest away. I see so many reactors get downright angry at her, forgetting that we literally saw how she was never taught how to love because her father literally abused her throughout her childhood. so thanks for actually getting that; your reaction just made it to the top of my list for that fact alone and earned you a subscription from me.

But he got 1 part wrong. Or at least I think so anyway. I've watched it a lot of times and seem many reactions to it. The one part I think everyone gets wrong is when Jenny has sex with Forrest and then leaves the next day, when she says I'm not running. Every reactor says close to the same thing. Yes you are. I honestly dont think she was. That's why the next time you see her in a cutaway scene she isn't partying or doing drugs she is working in a dinner and clearly looking a lot better. I think she finally decided to take action with her life, she tells and shows Forrest she does love him in the only way she knows how. Then leaves in the morning not because she is running but because she is no longer hiding. She basically used Forrest as her safe zone, she was leaving the safe zone, this time not because she was wanting to "fly" as she put it but because it was time to live.

Finally, a reactor who empathizes with Jenny's character. So many people who watch this film get angered with Jenny for constantly "running" from Forrest, but really she is running from herself. Yes, Forrest gets hurt in the process, and we feel awful for him, but to judge someone who suffered such physical and sexual abuse and to try to condemn that person for their lack of understanding the love that was right in front of that person is just mind-boggling to me. This reaction is a testament to your character too as you can sympathize, empathize, and understand.

One can enjoy this movie on so many levels - the characters are interesting as individuals, but we also see American history through their eyes - segregation in Alabama, the Vietnam War, the counterculture of the sixties, and the long hangover of the seventies. There are certain events that they allude to, but don't mention specifically. For example - Jenny's sickness could have been AIDS. Just a treasure of a movie - worth rewatching to catch all the historical references. Is that a Cavs jacket? I dig it!

It’s funny because the line I remember most from this film is not even in the movie, but in the original trailer for the film, near the end, but it’s true and it definitely was true of your reaction: “The world will never be the same once you’ve seen it through the eyes of Forrest Gump.” I believe it’s one of the most moral movies Hollywood ever made.

I like what the feather represents. At the end, Forrest wonders if we're just carried along on the wind, or if we have a destiny. He comes to the conclusion that it's a combination of both. The feather floats around on the breeze, but then is picked up and moved by Forrest, only to end up on the breeze again. A combination of destiny and just floating around.

Idk if you noticed, but after Forrest spoke to her grave, birds flew over it. She finally became a bird and was set free to fly far far away, like she always prayed for. Him running long distance was the beginning of cross country marathon running. He helped with the birth of Nike by wearing their logo on his shirt. When Nixon was on tv saying he'd resign, it was because Forrest called the main security about the flashlights going off in the building next door. That was the Watergate scandal.

My favorite movie of all-time. Forrest Gump is one of the purest souls in cinematic history and I've always felt like the world would be a much better if we tried to be more like him.

It's not "Run, Forrest, Run" that guides his life, it's what his mama tells him, that you do the best with what you get. Forrest did the best with what comes his way. There's an underlying theme in this film: Are we each affected by destiny or do we just float along (without purpose or control) on the breeze? It's what's represented by that feather on the wind that opens and closes the film. Jennie was that feather, her life ripped out like a feather from the wing of a ravaged bird. She was a lost soul, unmoored by her situation at too young an age to work it through. It overshadowed, took control, of her life. She prayed to be a bird so she could fly far far away, just like the flock that took wing next to her in that cornfield where she knelt. It took decades for her to sort it out, and her final freedom was in death, just like the birds that took wing as Forrest walks from her grave. That purposeless chaotic floating was what Jennie's life was, but the destiny of Jennie being with Forrest was demonstrated by how often their paths kept crossing, until she accepted that destiny and came home to him. Forrest seemed to catalyze destiny and potential in everyone he met.

So many people hate Jenny, never understanding why she was so broken for so long. You got it right away. Great reaction. You got a new subscriber.

@ 18:38 The scene of Lt. Dan pounding the taxi saying "I'm walking here!", along with the popular song at the time (Everybody's Talkin' by Harry Nilsson), is a reenactment of a memorable scene in a popular movie at the time "Midnight Cowboy" (1969). Forrest Gump is full of history and even the songs played were popular ones around the timeline and each event in the story. I checked your library and noticed the Back to the Future trilogy I'll check out next. If you're open to some top notch movie suggestions not there, and based on how you liked Forrest Gump, do "Interstellar" one of the best sci-fi's produced to date. And since you've seen Saving Private Ryan another good Hanks movie is "The Green Mile" a Stephen King story who also wrote totally awesome "The Shawshank Redemption" another one you should definitely do! Was scanning the comments to see if anyone else pointed the I'm Waking Here! thing and noticed a suggestion to do "The World According to Garp". Oh my goodness you should do that one! That is THE most underrated Robin Williams film there is. I watch a lot of reactors these days and have not seen anyone do that movie for some strange reason. And when you like that one, do "Jumanji" next! You will definitely like those, Auzzie! ✌️😎

I love all of the maturity in these comments about Jenny. In addition to her trauma - people ignore the fact that Jenny probably has triggering memories of Greenbow, Alabama . Notice as soon as she was old enough to get out, she left with no plans to return. Forrest on the other hand was never going to leave his hometown. He always returned to his mother, and his childhood home. So even if Jenny was capable of receiving and giving healthy love as a young adult, she may not have been ready to return to the town where her life was such a nightmare.

Robert Zemeckis is a genius, and all the actors in this are fantastic. Have you seen Braveheart? And Apocalypto? Those are Mel Gibson's greatest films in my opinion and it seems like you would like them. Also The Green Mile.

I had something similar during cross-country practice in high school. We ran hills all the time. Hills covered with sand like a quarter-mile dune. We ran against Fryberg which was known for their long steep hill. We beat them. If you pass someone on a hill, they're demoralized. And I remember coming down the other side. The steep downhill was covered deep with pine needles. Soon I found you could "go for it" and not hold back. Long giant strides with an effortless skid between each stride on the one-inch of pine needles. I felt like I was pushing 35.

Jenny and Forrest both represent two halves of the average person. One is damaged, tortured, dysfunctional and the other is the pure, innocent and 100% functional. The come together at the end and make peace with one another.

Hard to believe his (Tom Hanks) first success was cross-dressing in a sitcom, eh? :-D If you've not seen Cast Away and Philadelphia, I'd suggest them to get more exposure to his acting chops. On a personal note, I saw him once at the Mt Whitney visitor's center when I was picking up a wilderness permit for a backpacking trip. I resisted the urge to be a fanboy, but afterwards wished I'd had the courage to ask if he could prank my friend by walking up to her and acting like he knew her. Turned out he and his friends were parked next to her truck and she and her husband didn't even notice him :-p I think he makes some trips to the Sierra Nevada, as I'd seen a picture of him (with his coffee grinder) in a cafe at Red's Meadow (outside of Mammoth Lakes). Would be cool to run into him out there. Once met Clint Howard while camping (Ron Howard's brother).
