Greek and South Italian are simply centralizations in the naming scheme, it also refers to people of Dacian and Tharacian descent, which of course, refers to pre-Roman Romanians who later took on Latin.

Greeks and south Italians can be rather light coloured too. Blue and Green eyes are fairly common in Greece, blonde hair (even though mostly the darkish tones of it, not the Scandinavian type) too -and there even are some natural redheads around... Greeks and south Italians are practically the same thing genetically (that is why we are always grouped together), but note that Romanians and Greeks also have many commonalities, a lot of shared history in the region and even shared identity to some extent -in the past that is (because during the Ottoman emprire poeple mostly identifiyed with their religion and Church -and Greeks and Romanians had a common one). Many Greeks immigrated and settled in Romania, for centuries -or just made their living there. Also many Greeks are of part or full Aromanian ancestry and Aromanians an Romanians are probably related people

The Greek results should not be a surprise for any peson from the east Balkans. I mean there were thousands of Bulgarian, Albanian, Vlach etc. people who were assimilated into the Greek newly formed nation in 18th and 19th century.

The Greek nation has existed for thousands of years as such. Don't jump to conclusions by believing propaganda. I am half from Eastern Romilia. A region of today's southern Bulgaria, but we had a Greek national consciousness and in no way Bulgarian. Consider that all the Balkan countries, in which various nations exist today, were the site of the Eastern Roman Empire where Greek culture and Roman law dominated for 1000 years. So probably the various nations that sprung up were the ones who invented some nationality which is debatable!!

There is simple explanation for your Greek-South Italy heritage, you have somebody who is Cincar or as they call them self Armânji, in your family tree. Just google Aromanians and you will find where your ancestors may come to Romania, during the turbulent time of Ottoman occupation, because they have mostly been expelled from their homeland on Balkan, that is dominantly in now day South Albania. They were eastern orthodox people who spoked proto Aromanian language, and they were ethnically cleansed from side of Muslim Albanians and Turks, and they seek safety all over Balkan, among other orthodox Christians. They are mostly assimilated and incorporated among the nations they find their new home, only in Northen Macedonia, they still have some awareness of their origin. In Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania, they forgot, and mostly now are mixed with others.

It goes even further in time, as some of my earlier ancestors seem to have been Ilyrians, and Romans, though My true Ancestry website indicates more Ilyrian than Roman ancestors. Ilyrians used to live in the area of Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, etc. Thanks for all the info that you shared, I know that nowadays there are still some people that speak aromanian in Albania, which sounds similar to Romanian althought I remember having heard it a long time ago but it seemed to be difficult to understand as a whole for me, as a Romanian.

Why you are 42% Italian/Greek ? What is now Romania was once part of the Roman province of Dacia. It was conquered during the reign of Trajan in 106 CE and remained under roman rule for around 170 years. As you might know, romans didn't waged war just because, once conquered the population was assimilated and romans also established them in the conquered lands.

There is nothing strange about Italian Greek DNA, very many from Rumania have this combination. That is the result of the history. First the Roman Empire and assimilation and then the Ottoman Empire, when many Greeks moved in, especially in the south part of the country, Vallachia. It is written in the scriptures from 1599 when Mihai Viteazu waged war against the Turks, that the Greeks opposed it because they gained higher status and wealth. Afterwards the Fanariot period started when the Greeks ruled in Vallachia and Moldova.

South Italian and greek is very common for balkan people to show up. Ethnicities do not stop in country borders and rarely nobody is homogenous. I dont know really much about the heritage of romanian peoples, but i think most of the romanians are more like southern slavic (balkan) and greek is actually very similar to this and thats why it can show up as it completely. just like german showing up as english or scandinavian often, or baltic as eastern european. it just depends how similar the groups are and the algorythm just takes what is *most similar* I already expected that you have probably one of the 3 regions that are common for romanians. balkan, southern italian and greece or eastern european in general. Btw there is a big difference between southern and north italians in ethnicity.

I would not be able to tell which one is exactly our ethnicity, however I was quite in the dark about it previous to this "journey". Obviously greeks and romans fought in the balkan area, romans mixed with the dacians living in the area, then many other came, some won wars some didn't, and that is definitely part of my heritage. Some other websites do indeed localize my closest ancestors in the ilyrian area (mostly balkan), but still show I have some other ethnicities or share dna with others more towards the west of Europe.

You sound like you haven't really understood what DNA analysis means. Loving Italian people has nothing to do with it. Greeks and Southern Italians share genetic material for historical reasons and because of the people's movements. That's it. Southern Italians are genetically different than the Northern Italians for the same reason.

Don't be so literal about it! It is fun to imagine having links to places you love! I know what DNA is, I also know some instincts or even memories, trauma or phobias(which all sound crazy) can be passed down through generations through something called epigenetic changes. So I might not bee to far off saying what I said. However it's still a discussion and many studies that still need to be done. Meanwhile, it's just a fun way to think about it. 😊

To not be confused, Finnish here is just a represent of someones Siberian or East Asian heritage. I doubt that your result is correct for reason MH has low databases and not enough referent samples.

Hi! Thanks for your comment! You'd be surprised! I uploaded the DNA to True Ancestry, where your DNA is compared to samples from archeological sites around the world. Aside from a couple from 1550 before Christ And 200 before Christ which are not perfect matches(in what would be northern Ukraine and east Rusia), all my samples match to central and eastern Europe. Mainly Ilyrians, Romans but also Germanic tribes or empires that settled in some of Romania's present day territory in the past. I'm guessing that's what my 2 percent comes from😁

And as dar as I know Romanians have a shared history with Thraceans and Macedonians from the time of Alexander the Great, even thracean words in the language. You live at the crossroads of history. Where is the surprise?

At some point I honestly thought some of my closer ancestors(great great great grandparents)were actually from Middle or Far East. All my family - parents, grandparents and their parents are and were all Romanian); my grandfather's last name was "Cazacu" which indicates some Kazach roots or similar... My other side of the family has facial features that could look just a bit similar to those from far East. This, and the fact that in my mind I was not actually going that much back in History to like 100-200 AD or even more, it just surprised me. Sorry if this wasn't that much of a surprise for you 👀

South Italy means you have autosomal genes whith roots in Magna Graecia also greek and arnauts genes, there are many albanians there, for Balkan is to say its a big mixed cauldron of genes, unprecise.Make par example the DNA of your Dad also whith the haplo Dna youll see then whats about whith your origins. The autosomal test is not so accurate tru leak of data etc.Look at your Family Name and aproximise your romanian birthprovince? The finns autosoms(hungarian, latvian, leton etc)means you have far north ancestors hundreds of years ago.

Hi! Unfortunately my dad died last year. His/my last name has Slav origins, while my grandpa's name from my mother's side, was a Romanian ethnic one/roots closer to middle East probably. As per other DNA websites, it seems that my DNA is quite a mix, as you say, but mainly Greek and Roman(not a surprise, as the Balkans were the place where they fought and lived). My ancestors seem to have moved throughout the Balkans and at some point central Europe mostly. I find it fascinatingly beautiful 😁

I speak Romanian, Spanish and I have a medium level of French. Not surprising at all 👀 I bet Romanians who do not speak other languages (by itself sounds odd as Romanians tend to speak at least one more language) understand some Italian words but not full sentences. I loved to somehow tie my understanding of it to genetics. I know that it is not backed up by science but my mind loves wondering 😁
