Did my class 1 licence (CE) only after 1 year for car driving (I'm 22 btw) failed my first and second but nailed it at 3rd. And my examiner was chief examiner of the test center. I was more woried because he was chief examiner but we had few nice conversations and it calmed me down. And luckily we did 2 hour practice drive before test and begining was the start of test route. I still feel ecstatic about having full HGV licence. And starting my new job as a HGV driver in a few weeks time.

Once you've passed then you learn to drive was my fathers motto. How true once you do it for a living. Congratulations Ashley especially on the commentary explaining why you made certain decisions .

My dad kept telling me that when I was a learner. The only problem was that he insisted on teaching me how to drive before I passed my test. Unlearning the bad habits he taught me cost me a fortune.

sometimes you have to get into the lane you want early otherwise chances are that cars will just keep coming up on the outside of you and wont let you change lanes because they don't want to be stuck behind a slow lorry. Congrats for passing your test.

Well done Ashley. The blind-spot fault reminded me of my PSV driving lessons. I was criticised by my instructor for not checking my mirrors, although I actually was. The problem was that he couldn't see my head moving, so we re-set the mirrors slightly so I had to move my head markedly to get a good view. That way the examiner would be in no doubt that I was doing the checks. It worked!

First of all congratulations on passing your test Ashley and thanks for taking us along for the ride. I've really enjoyed this series and loved the commentary you provided during this video to explain what was going on. I for one would love to see you learn to drive buses always was a childhood dream of mine to drive buses for a living I never got there ( still time yet) but did end up driving mini buses for a living for 15 years.

I was only taught roundabout theory as there were none in the area I learned or sat my car test. My bus test I got 2 minor faults for not checking the blind spot. The examiner said at the end that checks should be exaggerated to ensure none are missed. My bike instructor put an inch of masking tape on the back of my black helmet so it was easier to see that I was checking then removed it for my test. Failed that twice deservedly but passed 3rd time. Lorry test my head was on a big swivel as per bus examiners instruction but it was a short test due to it being rush hour on market day so we never got far. From what I remember the bus was easier because it was automatic box but everything else was the same as class2

The leaving while looking in mirrors is something I’ve learned to do since starting to drive a van. Looking over my shoulder doesn’t really work to the right and I have a significant blind spot on the left of the vehicle. A lean forward is very helpful, especially when moving back into an inside lane on a motorway.

Great series 👍 I passed my artic test a month ago I thought it was good when you mentioned the massive blind spot that the mirrors caused I was quite shocked. I managed to pass mine with 1 minor for hesitation on a mini roundabout that I was turning left at. I felt quite calm on my test because I had the same examiner 2 years before on my car trailer test.

This has to be the best video you have posted. It`s ram full of of the details that you need to know and what to expect. BTW I did my LGV C+E on a Thursday afternoon in Guildford (and passed). For some reason this seems to be a best time on the roads they seem extra quite. Sorry to say I do not drive at the moment as the CPC process puts me off. Congratulations on your pass

Go for it with the CPC. It’s not hard, mostly just spending a day listening to someone talking at you. No real tests at the end. Then once you’ve done your five days (35 hours) it’s really just one day a year after that doing the same to keep it up.

Congrats and looking forward to seeing the C+E videos 👌🏻. I did car to class 1 recently and passed my test with 3 minors. To anyone thinking that they simply must do class 2 before class 1 - I'd save you're money and just do your class 1 as it's an entirely different beast to class 2. Class 2 can have it's challenges but throw a 40ft long trailer into the mix and it's a whole other ballgame.

An excellent series of videos. The biggest thing that I drive regularly is a long wheelbase, high roof minibus. The thing that I see compared to when I'm driving my car is 'Chelsea tractor' drivers being confused that they can't use the size of their vehicle to bully their way through. It makes me laugh every time. Occasionally when they start mouthing off about driving it through residential streets, I politely reply with 'I'm the same size as an ambulance and a lot smaller than a fire engine that might need to get to your house'.

Welcome to the world of LGV’s .Don’t forget that you can only do 1 extra day in any consecutive 2 weeks period (6 day week) assuming you do a 5 day week which I’m sure you do. Your time as an instructor is classed as work don’t forget. As an assessor on LGV’s myself and dealing with drivers their is at times a real concern at just how many do not understand EU and working time directive rules. Do something on the subject in future productions you have a very clear way of explaining if I had a £1 for everyone who fails I could retire. Great work very informative and always learning from your content 👍 Looking forward to the class 1 adventure

Now i am well made up with myself, i did my LGV early on this year, and like yourself had just three driving faults which i considered a result, especially now considering how good a driver you are, and the much greater meeting situations involved around the Stanton Hill test centre, i deliberatly avoided Stockport 14 miles away, for Stanton Hill 35 miles as i know Stockport very well but also how busy it can be my test day was about as busy as yours, i also chatted with the examiner, to try and relieve my own tension but you as you said need to be mindful of it distracting you, which i was when i was near the test centre expecting a right turn instruction i didnt anticipate a light change and picked up a fault on that, and i verbalised some of my descision making on the test to break my own tension and it kinda fills in gaps, lifetime ambition fulfilled.

I did my class one (c+e) licence and it expanded my driving career options considerably and doing my pcv, later on, gave me further career options including an "interesting" 2 years as a London bus driver Do the courses and do the tests will give you valuable insights into how things are "on the other side of the fence" and even doing weekend driving via an agency could work in your favour You gain *VALUABLE* experience _and maybe some new avenues of new pupils even?_ As for doing the pcv, it's different to truck driving but not a million miles apart and the size of a bus won't feel as intimidating to you - if a bus can fit down a road, so can't truck

Well done mate! I passed my class 1 (C+E) in October and usually I don't get nervous during a driving test, however on this test they crept in and I found myself having to calm myself down which took my concentration of the test. This only cost me 2 minors which I can live with 😂. It was nice to hear your're doing this to give you HGV drivers point of view which you can pass onto your students. It just shows what a professional you are and I have huge respect for you👍Looking forward to your class 1 videos and how you find driving an arctic. The main thing that shocked me driving one for the first time is how much of the mirror you loose even with the smallest bend on with either the trailer headboard or curtain. Well done mate 👍

Congratz on the pass, though I knew you would pass it, regarding the first 'pull over in a safe place' I was surprised he used that sentence as my class two and my class one tests they state whether to ignore driveways or not when pulling over i.e. 'pull over in a safe place ignoring driveways', but ok at least you passed so it doesn't matter. I have my second test attempt at Class 1 tomorrow (19/04/22), a little pressure as the company is paying for this one but if I fail again I have to pay for the next one which for me £500 is a lot of money.

Very crammed adn thankfully I only got one minor, which was very fair tbh as they missed me rear wheels went over a flat curb turning a tight left junction. They were also impressed with me using all my lane when i needed it. My test was in the Mids, heavy traffic, suicidal kids running into the road. Hence I failed my first test . I will admit I wasn't ready . I passed second time with only a couple of minors .

I must say, driving a large vehicle on those roads seems heroic. Lane conflicts are basically not a thing anymore in the U.S. or Canada. Any road narrow enough that you would need to enter the opposing lane to pass a parked vehicle is a no parking zone here, with no exception to mind in my city. We also do not erect traffic signals without pedestrian signals, at intersections with pedestrian crossings. We have one major roundabout around here and it doesn't produce much drama (except in the season when the new young men come to station at the air force base here).

Congratulations @AshleyNeal 🎉🎉🎉 never doubted you. On the items you were not tested on, on my car driving test I never did an emergency stop, any roundabouts or go above 30mph which I was well prepared to do but a little shocked and felt I cheated the test. Also when you knew you was heading back to the test centre, on my failed test back in June I thought I was heading back because of a fault I did and my concentration dropped and that lack of concentration ultimately led to my serious fault. On my second test after watching numerous test route videos and your channel I never took the ‘heading back to test centre as gospel’ so much so that if the examiner doesn’t give you a direction to take then go straight on. Don’t know if it was a ploy to fail me or not but with less than 100 yards from a light control junction he said sorry turn left at the lights, in around 20 yards I had to slow down a little more, check my mirrors, indicate and move to the left which I think I did well to do. Im gutted I can only drive Automatic, but as I’ve said before, because of what my first instructor was doing in a manual car I decided Automatic as the instructor has no clutch pedal. I’d have loved to try a HGV test but aren’t HGV’s all Manual? Or should I think about retaking my test again in a manual?

A lot of HGVs are automatic. The one Ashley was driving was also an automatic. Where I work we have a mixture and as a holiday/sickness cover driver I have to jump between the two. Not sure if you can have an auto only HGV license but definitely look into it.

Passed my driving test last August and instantly fell in love with driving, I'd be lying if I said the thought of HGV and LGV driving hasn't crossed my mind. Definitely going to look into it now.

Well done Ashley ✔ As an aside in my 1971 car test I was marked down for not doing the signposted 40 on a dual carriageway, I was doing around 35 I think.

Please go for first class ASAP I went for class I straight from B, just recently done my 30h training where I took 10h on rigid to get familiar with size of vehicle and 20 on artic then I passed separate reversing exam and got certificate but suddenly my instructor cancel my on road test day saying I'm not ready yet for test ! So I have to take more hours and see how it go. It will be handy for me to see more videos how to handle artic. Already subscribed to your channel 😀 my extra hours will carry in March huhu...Thanks for your good job

In order of preference, my favourite vehicle to drive is my 7.5T horsebox, which while not shorter than your test vehicle is of course the same width and visibility. Second up is my works Ambulances, and finally my car.. I really like driving with that higher, more visible, seating position and the extra size of the vehicle I really don't find to be an issue. Just needs patience at pinch points. My favourite drive ever was probably the drive to deliver a horse I had sold in the 7.5tonner, from Wolverhampton area to near Hull.. Lovely relaxed drive, most of it spent foot to the floor as the vehicle has a governer so I don't need to worry about speeding on the motoroway.

Well done Ashley step 1 done, Believe it or not passing these tests is the easy part, You have the road knowledge and know how to drive before you sit in a truck so you dont need to learn how to drive as if you were 17 again, The adaptions you need because of the size width weight and length is what most people dont realise changes how you react to certain situations, Were you held back even though the 2 cars had stopped to let you through was a perfect example, you could see there was no clear easy exit after passing them so did the right thing and let them clear the obstruction for you, The hard part of HGV driving as im sure you had similar experiences on your lessons is the lack of understanding from other road users who either dont wont or cant understand why you are driving in the manner that you are, This is the main cause for car/bicycle drivers/riders to do the silly things they do around HGVs, Im 23 years into class 1 driving and This is my last year as a HGV driver. Multiple reasons , With the new highway code H1 H2 H3 rule change i feel like we are crash for cash victims waiting to be further punished at every oppotunity now. The new laws make sense in a fashion but they are there to be manipulated by a certain type of road user at the cost of many peoples insurance and licence. Once again well done on Passing ive kept up with your vlogs through this and you took to it really quickly and in my opinion asked all the right questions when unsure. Onwards to your Class 1! Your contribution to the industry voids my leaving so we have kept the stats on an even keel haha Good luck ill keep watching.

If it does increase insurance premiums for lorry drivers then, with luck, it might result in a long overdue re-design of lorries to bring the cab lower and improve visibility. It's really noticeable that bin lorries and buses around me have been redesigned with this in mind, but nothing happens with lorries. It won't stop people behaving unwisely around big vehicles but ups the chances of it being spotted in time for the driver to do something.

@@mattc9005 The reasoning for not having lower cabs on HGVs is for the fact they cannot lower engines and gearboxs drive axles differentials etc due to the size of the power plant needed , the ratio of weight/ balance would be so far off they wouldnt be able to carry the loads that they do. Bus engines are at the rear as you are no doubt aware and bin lorries use very small engines in comparrison to the size of the vehicle hence using lower cabs for ease of access not for better vision. you coud never pull a 31 ton box and a skelly trailer with the engines they use in Bin lorries. it simply wouldnt move. Theres alot more to it than just add a lower cab or another window. And in all honesty Even though im a HGV driver and people think i take sides, I dont its just experience talking, A HGV is alot easier for other vunerable road users to see than vice versa yet people will always take chances. The country has to have these vehicles on the roads to keep moving forward. Yet as drivers we are responsible and punished severly for every little mistake, and we don make mistakes no one is perfect. The resposibility that is put on HGV drivers out ways the responsibility of any car/van/bike driver/rider put together, Lack of respect is whats missing in the industry , 12 months ago we were all heros now we are the mugs of the road again who are used as easy targets for others. how quickly the world changed when we returned to some normality. The new laws on the highway code are the most ridiculous laws unless youre a cyclist or pedestrian then you have the law on your side now. people will take great advantage of these laws and it will cause deaths, Driving isnt easy in a HGV we do alot more than a car driver does. We can drive down the same stretch of tarmac yet in a HGV we have to watch for over hanging branches sign posts the camber of the road, a steep camber can put the top of a double decker trailer 6-10 inches further to the left than the wheels of the trailer. We have to use lane discipline and use the amount of road needed to turn corners, Car driver that dont drive trucks have never been educated on this as nothing in the highway code states they need to know. so unless common sence kicks in they just assume the driver is taking the p*ss and will still pull along side, if the truck driver clips him when he turns whos fault is it? you got it the HGV. this is the tip of the iceburg when it comes to HGV driving, Im not ranting its just the things NON hgv drivers do not know .
