Not a bad drive so far, though i notice you're driving an automatic. The lights at time index 38;30 you should have anticipated the light better, and come to a stop. Even in the situation you wee in, you should have in my opinion stopped, even if it were just over the line at the lights rather than go through on RED. They had been on green for a while as you were approaching, this is giving you information they might change soon and a little slower would give you more time to stop correctly. And at time index 27;00 you were supposed to go straight on but were in the wrong lane. you noticed it though and good, instructor told you to turn right. Position is out at time index 46 40, this is causing now problems with steering at 46, 45. CROSSING OVER ARMS AND HANDS, a big no no. and before at 46; 20 pulling onto the island. Time index 53;00, in the wrong lane to turn right, you were in the far right lane, you should have been in the left lane, despite what the instructor told you. Then after the manoeuvre, move over to the right lane. You were commenting on the silver ford mondeo, and you were concerned of it being up your left side and would have preferred it to be in front of you ! This would not have happened if you had been in the correct lane. The Instructor has caused you problems here, and is teaching you wrong, sorry i call it as it is. He passed you, but then he's your instructor, it maybe different on the day, knowing you have the real instructor looking on. And yes i took time to look at the whole video, would i have passed you ! Yes i think so, you showed good in sight to other road users and what they might do, this comes from your experience as a driving instructor. You felt nervous and this is why i give leeway to the mistakes you made, but i would give a talk to you on the red light situation and positioning and hands crossing.. Knock it off from the start. It's a NO NO, and it leads to problems. If you had been in a manual gear box with a 16 speed splitter, you'd be all over the place and i would not have passed you. Slow it down in busy areas, give more time in passing parked and on coming traffic. Remember the truck could be carrying goods, this makes you heavy and harder to stop, especially in the rain. Don't be over complacent that you're an instructor of cars, this is a whole new ball game. And lastly i also noticed the instructor did not take you on the motorway at any point. given that there are a few close by to where you were, why not ?

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS take your gloves off BEFORE you open the door. If they are dirty you will make a mess everything in the cab. Even if you fill the door handle with grease or oil you can imagine what it will happen later, handles, steering wheel, buttons everything will need a very good clean.

Well done Ashley, although I had every confidence you would Pass the mock test…..having said that, you never really know the mind-set of the ‘examiners’ on the day. Your Instructor appears to, throughout this whole process, ‘Instructs with precise information’ - ‘Give encouragement’ - and be totally neutral for the mock….very impressive. Thanks for sharing.

Ithink this is a great way for the instructor (Mr neal) to get a front seat experience on what it's like to be in that seat on a test. Great idea pal. Love your videos, great knowledge. I had a similar driving instructor when I was learning, and I tell you what.. there's sooooo much that stuck with me from his style of instructing, much like yours. Your pupils have a great chance learning from the likes of yourself. Top man

Finally had the opportunity to watch this upload on widescreen tv instead of the mobile phone! Great drive there Ash. Something that I noticed here..... Dashcam footage certainly was deceptive - in terms of distance - compared to the in cab camera. To see both of them together is of real benefit. It reminded me of a previous upload where you had to demonstrate this point....... Something to do with a woman in red and the resulting incident even though you passed through on an Amber light 🤔. Nerves are understandable. After all - you have a reputation on the line here. Peace 👊👍

The auto box makes all the difference. Many years ago I took my test in a truck with no power steering and a crash gearbox. The indicators didn't self cancel either. An excellent drive though with some hand crossing on the wheel at times.

Well done, I am very surprised you passed, when you were passing the half on and half off the road vehicles you only indicated your intentions once when you moved out, you also failed to do any follow through checks when lorries, buses, motorcycles and high sided vehicles passed you on the opposite side of the road. Also the loading of the vehicle you forgot to mention the load has to be within the weight and dimension limits of the vehicle, I was surprised the examiner never mentioned that either. Maybe a little instructor/tester comradery was at play here, or maybe I had stricter instructors and examiner. My take away from this is if you want to pass your Class C/C+E go to scouse land for your license ;)

I note there is no longer a separate category for automatic truck licence. An auto, of course gives you much more time for the roadcraft by taking away the actual mechanics of making the truck move. How do you think you would get on with a class 1 / CE with an 'old fashioned' manual gearbox such as a Fuller Roadranger or an Eaton Twin Splitter? As there is an art that needs to be learnt to get them moving and keeping them moving, especially with a load on. When I did agency work for VAG in the 90s I had to take a 1 day course on an MAN with a Twin Splitter, even though I was experienced with it in Leyland DAFs. One of the 'joys' of agency work was maybe driving a different truck every day, and in those days there was a multitude of different engine and gearbox combinations, especially the non standard H pattern in ERFs, many tunes were played.

Just curious. HGVs may have somewhat different handling qualities when fully loaded as opposed to when empty. Is there any comments from experienced HGV drivers on ways to manage this, and what precautions should be taken? I'm just a regular car delivery driver, but it would be interesting to have a perspective and appreciation on that issue, and may help for those getting into learning to drive an HGV, or recently passed an HGV test.
@marksaddler
@marksaddler 2 жыл бұрын
The truck must be partially loaded for the test (most places use IBCs full of water). When you’re driving, very much depends what the load is, the type of trailer etc but the more weight you have on the more difficult it is to stop it all.
@ManxAndy
@ManxAndy 2 жыл бұрын
A fully or partially loaded HGV is far more unstable in corners or at roundabouts , the acceleration and deceleration is far slower than a car, so looking ahead at all times is important, anticipation is important, I did 23 years on mainly 32 ton 4 axle big hook loaders, which inherently have a high centre of gravity when carrying 40 yard skips….I will be honest, I’ve had the rear most axle in the air on a corner more than once due to a top heavy load in the skip, even when taking it steady , it makes you concentrate I can tell you….👍🇮🇲
@allenhenry8236
@allenhenry8236 2 жыл бұрын
I drive class 1 up to 44ton. You really need to be aware when fully loaded, especially for braking distances as they significantly increase with the weight of the load, also when pulling out at roundabouts or junction as the acceleration is really slow. Normal drivers don't appreciate the braking distance needed with a fully loaded wagon which is why too many cut in front in "the gap" but that gap is needed

Hi Ashley, I’m curious is to why you and the examiner were wearing your HI VIS vest whilst driving? I remember way way back lol I was told to remove my HI VIS whilst driving my lorry. I never really asked why back then as to be honest I didn’t like wearing it anyway. Many years later I decided to drive buses for a living (it’s soul destroying) and again we wasn’t allowed to wear HI VIS vests or jackets while driving. But we did have an explanation and I thought a reasonable one too…. It’s because of the reflection of the vests onto the windscreen that it did obscure your vision in some instances especially at night. 🤔🤔 Enlighten me 😊

No Ashley not at all , I wasn't looking to dig my hole deeper again haha or fish for negativity. yeah I can imagine there is alot of idiotic patience vampires out there when your in your driving school car. Although it does get worse, speaking from experience , the bigger the hgv is, the more of the survival mode drivers get "must get in-front of the wagon" especially in the more populated areas, in which you have to anticipate for & cater for. I think it is great that you are doing this hgv course!, as I feel it's is ludicrous to think as recently passed car driver can jump onto a motorway with no experience, among with the ever increasing volume of hgv's on the road network an are completely unaware of the dangers & scenario that will occur. , observing ahead, speed, conditions etc. An now you'll be able to shed some knowledge onto your pupils. 👌 have a great new year Ashley an I wish you all the best building this awesome channel 👍

Question: a friend of my son went for his test he wears glasses and was told to wear a mask, his glasses misted up and he missed a sign, causing him to fail his test. should people who wear glasses be made to wear a mask with the prospect of the misting up and life being a lot more dangerous?

Inform the instructor before beggining the test. Most will make accommodations. Edit: I don't see there being much else you could do unfortunately :(

Undertaking is no different in other vehicles. I think you know full well where I stand on it as you’ve commented on the video that I clarify. This therefore makes me question your reasoning behind your comment. Please enlighten me 👍🏼

Yeah perhaps the monkey business asking about the demister was a hint related to the weather conditions of the day, noticed you were messing about with the dashboard on a few occasions delaying a prompt takeoff, funny how we enter a more busy area when your more tired towards the end of the journey.

What is this ridiculous looking around your right shoulder all the time when taking off? Way overdone. Only needed when leaving the kerb and there is a side street you need to check or you're on a 3+ lane road and you are changing to lane 2. As long as you have your mirrors setup correctly you should only need to check level with your shoulder on the drivers side. Blindside I will lean to get a better view.
