For this week's video, let's talk about lenses and specifically my holy trinity lenses: The M.Zuiko 150-400 Pro f/4.5, the 90mm macro f/3.5 and the 12mm f/2.0. What is your holy trinity for lenses? What do you think of my choices for nature photography? I look forward to discussing this topic with you this week.

My favorite trinity would be -8mm F1.8 (great contrast and nice angle of view -90mm f3.5 macro (a life without macro is maybe feasible but not desirable 😂) -300 f4 ( as I do not own this lens I've to switch to the budget version the 100-400) Get well soon Emily.

I have two systems: Olympus and Nikon. My Olympus OM1 is dedicated to birds and wildlife, street photography and travel. So, my Olympus trinity are the: 150-400mm 4.5 pro; 12-100mm f4 pro; and 25mm 1.2 pro. Just got back from a getaway to London where I used the last two every day getting some great shots. I’m especially happy with my nighttime shots using the 25. And the 150-400 is simply outstanding on the OM1. For me, it competes against my Z8/500mm 5.6 pf combo. Both get great shots but I’m able to catch images with the Oly gear that I can’t catch on my Nikon.

Merci beaucoup. Great choices but as always the answer is ‘it depends’ ;) I have the macro 60mm and the 12mm, both great lens. Also the 75mm is my go-to. I don’t shoot wildlife as much as I shoot on the streets. The long zooms are lower down in priority therefore. Great video. 🙏

Can't afford the 150-400 , but the 100-400 has become one of my favourite lenses of the system. It's surprisingly sharp, if not overly fast at the long end , and the extreme focal range allows mixed use and very unusual fields of view if you go looking for them. I also love the 17/1.2 prime , it has a beautiful look in it's rendering. The 90mm macro is definitely a lens i'm interested in. Watching closely.

I dearly love the (inexpensive) 17mm f/1.8. I have probably kept that on my camera more than any other lens until I recently got an OM-1 and the 12-40 f/2.8. I am a fisheye addict because I shoot lots of spherical panoramas. I have used the Samyang 7.5mm f/3.5 for many years, but upgraded to the Olympus 8mm f/1.8 when I got my OM-1. Wow, it is a stunner! I always have my Olympus 60mm macro in my bag, since you never know when a macro moment will happen. The Olympus 75mm f/1.8 is less often in my bag, but I know I will make some magic when it goes on the camera. Thanks for your inspirational videos, Emilie!

Thought-provoking topic, Emilie! I'm not sure that I can provide a clear answer though, because I have 5 lenses that range from 8mm up to 400mm (I have the lovely 100-400 that you mentioned, and the 60mm macro - surely the best bang-for-buck lens around), and I fall in love with each when I use them. That said, the ones I use most are the 12-40, 40-150, and the 60mm macro, and if weight was an issue when traveling (overseas), these are the ones I would take, all the while fretting about the ones I had to leave at home. I would love to have the 150-400 but in Australia it's more expensive than a medium-format body, so it's an unattainable luxury and will remain that way unless I can find myself a rich uncle.😉 All the best, Emilie.

Yes like you mentioned your choice of lenses fit your style. Any of the Olympus pro lenes are amazing for great sharpness. My trinity + one other is the Olympus 150-400, 150-40, 40-12mm f2.8 pro lenes and because Olympus super wide lenes are fisheye, I choose the LUMIX Summilux 9mm f1.7 for my super wide non fisheye that I also use for Astro pictures. My style of photography is wildlife, landscapes and Astro or nighttime landscapes which I enjoy. Keep up the good work.

My holy trinity. Well, lately, I have mostly shot birds, so the 300+MC14 clearly a favourite. Macro is a big interest, and I got the 60 mm. The 90 mm is on the wishlist. My third favourite is the 40-150 pro, but if I go somewhere with a minimal setup, it would be the PM2 with the 17 mm F1.8.

Great video! For me it is the 300mm f4 for wildlife usually with the MC-14 TC, 12-100mm f4 for scenics and travel and the 8mm f1.8 FishEye for astrophotography. There are other lenses I usually take on trips though, so much to choose from. I’d like the 12mm for night shots, I have the 17mm f1.8 but I sometimes want something wider.

Great4mm video! I recently bought the OM -1 and love the 40-150 plus 2x converter for birds, although I have had recent success with the 300 plus 1.4x converter too. I like the 7-14mm for night sky, and either the 12-100 or 12-14mm for street photography. I own the 12mm lens and had never thought about using it for sky, but that sounds like a great option for travel.

I once had the 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 IS but I replaced it by the 40-150mm which I thing is much better and about the same price. The focal length is not the same, but I could verify that is very difficult to get sharp images when you reach the 400mm length.

That 150-400 looks like a lens for weightlifting! Nice to see the alternatives. It’s often as much about volume for hiking as it is weight. Do you ever use some Panasonic lenses, some are a bit lighter, smaller and stabilized (although that won’t work with OM cameras). How do you find using the OM5 for video…I think it is a great camera certainly for photos. Hope your cold is over soon!
@EmilieT

Looks is the keyword :) People are always so suprised when they hold it as it is lighter than it look. I have used a Panasonic lens for wildlife but ended up selling it and getting the Olympus model. More compatibility and smoother barrel convinced me. But that said, panasonic makes great lenses. I love using the OM5 for video. It is so convenient and easy to carry it around with the 12mm attached.

The 90mm Macro in the main lens I’m using at the moment. It’s awesome for any bug, butterfly or moth, but it is also useful for general work. If I want to take birds in flight the 40-150mm f2.8 and MC14 works well, it gives me the ability to find the bird in flight and then zoom in. For landscapes I take the 12-100 f4 or if I don’t want the extra weight I take my smart phone.

All used because I'd be broke otherwise. For reptiles, which are some of my favorite subjects, 40-150 2.8, 60mm 2.8, 12-40 2.8 for wide angle snake snots, and I wish I hadn't sold my 45 1.8 because the colors pop like no other on kingsnakes.

I’ve actually been getting a little interested in Micro 4/3rds recently because - The latest version of computational photography, including the live nd composition stuff on the OM 5 (I think thats the latest one) - The zoom capabilities - The possibility of small and portable, instead of going for an okayish 1” sensor… Currently, I’m thinking my APS-C travel trinity is going to be (still buying the last one at some point) - Sony 50mm F1.8 OSS (I don’t have a stabilised lens, body, and this baby is light and very good) - Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 (got it this month, and it hasn’t left my camera yet) - Tamron 18-300mm super zoom (I was thinking about getting something that would work with both ff and APS-C,,,, but I realised I want something light and portable and this is the way to go) I do have too many lenses, so I’m trying to figure out what works as a good travel camera combo… for example I do have a sigma 100-400mm (nicknamed chonky boi), and a tamron 70-180mm (nicknamed smaller chonky boi), which are beautiful lenses, but not exactly easy to bring with everywhere… But I really liked the the style of video because it focuses on “what do I need to do what I want” rather than the conventional “trilogy” of lenses…
@EmilieT
@EmilieT 11 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Yes, it should be your lens trilogy. What you need to capture and what you can carry to capture it. For me small and compact is key but I do need to carry the 150-400 for wildlife. Fortunately, it is not that heavy for its reach. You should definitely try the micro 4/3 system and see how you like it. The computational feature of the OM line is really incredible.

This summer I was lucky (!!) to go to the Galapagos. I took the 12-100, 100-400 and the 30mm macro-it was a perfect trinity, even though I didn’t have the opportunity to use the 30 (but I could not go without a macro!) I now have a trip to Costa Rica coming up and am considering adding the 12-40 or something of that size and speed for when I’m walking around in a village or someplace where I’d like a smaller size lens.
