First thing you do is get a dehumidifier. Mold needs humidity to grow. Next thing you do is find out why your house has humidity. You either have a water leak or a condensation problem. If you don't get rid of the humidity the mold will just grow back.

Most honest companies will go back and correct it. Mold works by spores per cubic meter. If they did a Air Quality test (within 1000 Cubic feet of open space) they should of picked up that there is more mold spores coming from a different place. Even if it’s hidden behind a wall. I think you should call the mold company and ask them for the mold test results. And if they don’t have it then you have been scammed and call the insurance directly and advise them that u signed they’re papers to bill the insurance, but they did not repair the job correctly according to protocol. "Mold works by spores per cubic meter"? That doesn't make any sense. The toxicity in the air doesn't usually come from the spores, it comes from the emitted gas from the mold that's toxic. You want to avoid spreading the spores to avoid further contamination. So, when they remove the affected areas they close off the area and use commercial filtration systems. I think you simply stayed in a Holiday Inn last night?

As a contractor this seems very off. That much in mold damage is super serious, and typically mold is from lifestyle, long showers, and not using vent fans in bathrooms. Depending on the severity you can typically cover it with KILZ, and then you repaint in texture, if its worse than that then you can remove and replace.
@proborderlandsgamer
@proborderlandsgamer 3 жыл бұрын
Thinking about it some more. If it is in the attic, then it could also be a roof leak. So the next time it rains you could have someone look in the attic, and get someone on the roof. Buy a gallon of tar from a local home depot or any other store. And just spread it over the leak. Not a long term fix, but temporary, until all 3 can pool money together to fix the roof.

@proborderlandsgamer
@proborderlandsgamer 3 жыл бұрын
@@mph5896 I understand what you're saying. I have to deal with emergency calls all of the time over the phone, and when I get to a job it is often heavily misrepresented. But given the number figure, the only idea I can come up with that makes sense is a roof leak over a long period, because mold does not happen overnight. If you use a $10,000 figure on a home valued around $160,000 it would have to be very severe. Obviously I could be way off. But with how it was described I just feel like there is more to the story, or she is getting poor estimates. As previously stated, most mold problems can be resolved using stuff from your local hardware store, then the cost to repaint that section. But if it's in the attic, I assume the area isn't very large, and the estimate seems rather high. Mold happens from condensation and sitting water to grow. So the only conclusion I can come up with would be a roof leak, gutters installed improperly, or not sealed. But regardless I can't wrap my head around the estimate.

The other statement was more accurate, draw a line in the sand and you will get more creative, is absolutely spot on. Most older homes, will either have mold or asbestos, or both. Taking a loan out will not help. Selling the house, now that their is documented mold, is not an option. My advice is to start with an air purifier in each room, and a dehumidifier in each room. Tackle the mold with a water/bleach mix and PPE. contact your homeowners insurance company, and let them go after the mold contractor. Then, start to look for a new place, if it's an option.

So the 10k would be split 3 ways right? No way I'm paying 10k, the mold people should of done a full inspection in the first place. I'm paying a 3rd of the 10k with the roommates or I'm selling the house. 10k is a ton of money especially with no guarantee the mold is gone for good.

Renters are not responsible for making repairs or remedies on problems with the property. They don't own it. She owns the house, so it's her responsibility to fix it. I wonder what those two are paying her and what sort of lease contract they signed. Dave and Rachel didn't really bring that up but it is important

Good luck selling a house with mold in an area that isn't exactly a hot spot for real estate. Agree with Dave though, she needs to get out of the house, she can't afford it on that income level. One house emergency and she's bankrupt. She'd be best off selling it if she can(doubt she will get full price so she's probably going to still owe money on the loan) and renting and trying to get a better job.

She has a water leak somewhere in the attic. Fixing that plus the mold is going to be more than $10k. Dave is right, her making $36k a year she can’t afford the payment to fix all of this. I would sell and disclose the issues. And in the meantime get a part time job and save up cash in case it doesn’t sell and do the repair yourself.

For the mold problem I feel like she has structure damage like leaks that’s causing water to come through and mold to happen.I think she should just sell it and move somewhere else.also she isn’t making enough to own a home nor buy a decent one on her own.

My Mom had water seeping from damaged pipes under her ground floor apartment for years. She tried everything Eventually she had a survey done and the pipes under the apartment were repaired, the service charge she paid acted like insurance and finally it resolved. I do think though those cases are rare and it is usually just that people are too scared to wipe off the mold and are reluctant to ventilate. I live in England and have a concrete ground floor I have rising damp from rain seeping into the ground on winter creating more damp in the earth than can evaporate.Some people don’t even believe in rising damp and eventually I had a damp course injection to the brick. Combined with ventilation it works and was a few hundred pounds to put right. I am guessing you are from the US as in England there is so much of it due largely to climate we need a different approach than to move.

Yes. Could be a poorly insulated attic, poor ventilation, a slow roof leak 🤔. The true remedy may be much more expensive than the mold remediation.

You could even get a 2litre dehumidifier on Amazon for $60-$80. Sure, you'd have to empty it several times a day, but that's no big deal. Bleach on the mold to kill it back and a dehumidifier removing the moisture will buy her significant time to save up.

Amy get a razor blade cut all the mold out you can. The stuff you can't spray everything with bleach go to home Depot get a nice dehumidifier. Then hire repair men to slowly repair what you had to cut out. Keeping relative humidity under 50% and mold cannot grow. Also invest in a couple of one room air purifiers with UV-C lights built in put those in your bedroom and whatever other room you spend the most time in. Hope you see this Amy. Good luck stay healthy. Two good air purifiers and a big dehumidifier will run you about $400-600 and will hold you over. Check for broken exhaust vents while you're up there.

Not necessarily.... We bought a home while making 20k a year. We put a large down payment on it and 7 years later had most of it paid off and sold it for twice what we paid for it (we bought cheap and did some remodeling over the years). We were then making 35k and bought our current house (for 170k) and put almost half down and will have it paid off in 10 years or less. Also, we have 5 kids, soon to be 6. You have to do your budget, follow the steps and be gazelle intense, but yes you can absolutely afford to buy a house on 35k, if you know how to manage your money.
