My HRT journey has been a long one - and I'm not alone. I've had several requests for a video on how I found the right HRT and what worked and what didn't. Finding the right HRT can be a difficult journey for some, which is why it is so important we share our stories. Here's mine, from Femoston to Evorel and Oestrogel.
I'd love to know what (if any) HRT you're on and your own HRT journey. Let me know in the comments.

Was on patches for 4 weeks but because of shortages I switched to Estrogel Pro which includes progesterone tablets. I feel fantastic, skins great, anxiety has lifted its like a miracle, am sleeping better and am losing weight around my abdomen. Im 52 and am in Australia. I had been experiencing anxiety and was put on Lexapro which was awful. it finally clicked with me that the anxiety was hormonal. HRT has been amazing.

Oh! My doctor gave me Lexapro and I took it for a few years but I got off of it because of the side effects. I only just figured out that my depression is related to perimenopause. I'm so glad to hear that you feel so much better! I need to call my doctor.

American here.... it's not any better for us to try to get help and relief from Menopause. There is no one size fits all treatment over here either. I feel part of the problem is that the subject is not taught in medical school and there is not nearly enough research into how to treat the awful symptoms. They have tons of clinics for low T and ED for men but women are pushed aside or as you said treated with anti depressants when that is not our issue. And the cost is another problem as it is usually out of pocket. Hopefully in the future better treatment will help those who follow us into this nightmare called menopause.

I have had the coil twice, once when I was peri menopause, I went private, the gynaecologist said once I went into menopause I needed the other half of HRT, my Gp refused me. Then my coil ran out I need a new one, I was told by NHS you can’t have one because your in menopause. The NHS IS screwed up. I moved house and got a young GP lady, she saved my life, she got my coil fitted, and my patches sorted. It took a few months for me to feel normal. But I think it’s the best combination for HRT. I feel great now, the shit that some of these GP’s come out with is scary. They need educating on the menopause. No woman she be denied HRT, in my opinion. It’s easy to get it right and these doctors should know better…

I had progesterone intolerance as well. I now use Prometrium micronized progesterone 100 mg every other day vaginally. It has made a huge difference. As for estrogen I have tried many different forms. It truly is a process & you have to be your own advocate. Trust how you feel! You can feel normal again. Maybe not like when you were in your 30’s lol but much better. I just turned 60 and have been dealing with a very tough perimenopause & menopause since my mid 40’s. Every symptom out there. HRT has helped most symptoms but still working on it. I’ve been menopausal since I was about 56.

I've just found your videos and finding them very interesting! Now 62 years old and been on HRT for many years. Such a juggle to find the one 'for you' and it seems every few years I've had to change mine. I've just been through doctors and specialist treatment over last 6 months and all change again. Phew!! Getting there again now though!! Planning on staying on for xx years going forward, so many advantages for good health !!

I'm 61 now, and had been recently diagnosed with a mini prolapse and osteoarthritis. I had some symptoms still with regards the menopause and so I asked my doctor about going onto HRT. I had done quite a bit of research and the lack of estrogen so I thought my doc should surely agree and would put me onto HRT, alas all I was offered initially was anti depressants. Now move forward a couple of months and after being referred to a specialist at the menopause clinic, and her making me aware of all the side effects of HRT, I then had to make her aware of the benefits, anyway long story short, I am now on the gel and the nightly progesterone pill. Early stages at the min, but seems to be helping. I was also prescribed ovestin cream, which is amazing, I would suggest that to everyone

Thanks so much for this video, just started on Evorel Sequi 50 patches today, I'm peri menopausal age 47 and found this to be really helpful and informative. I am a scientist who is aware that there is no 'one size fits all' for any medication as you rightly point out. Individualised medicine is the way forward but unfortunately with the NHS it's often money that matters most. Hopefully with more people like you sitting on your local council and advocating for women like us, health will change for the better. I commend you🙏 Dosage is really important too and I'm sure can be tricky to get right. Especially when we can't use blood tests to monitor levels and we don't know what our baseline was before we began HRT

Ive been worried and trying to get used to hrt and its been a challenge. Haven't ever found a doctor that knew what they were doing. Starting hrt years after menopause is giving me symptoms of menopause all over.

Thank You for speaking about this. In 3 months time I will be 61 yrs. old. But about 4 years ago I started to feel a lot of pain in my joints & bones & Pains in my feet & No libido. A few months ago after begging & pleading with them at GP's surgery I wanted my blood checked out of curiousity I wanted to know what my actual hormones levels were, It was a Male Nurse that did my blood test & I would find out the actual analysis when the results came back. When I returned to see him about my analysis/results all he said was that I was Post-Menopausal & That was that! I wasn't given any advice or any HRT Medication or anything at all !! Basically I was just sent on my merry way with nothing ziltch nada! Waste of time & Totally useless! The U.K is pathetic in treating the menopause, It's the 21st century NOT Prehistoric caveman days! & Now they want to treat us with C.B.T. which is total quackery! I'm going to have to skint myself to pay to go Private Doctors to get the help I desperately need. x

Really great and informative video. I was put on HRT after a total hysterectomy with BSO age 55 still not menopausal at time of surgery (3 years ago). I am one of the lucky ones who felt better straight away on it. I guess because without ovaries I don’t have hormonal fluctuations. It is a bit of a challenge to try different dosages. I’ve tried patches (Estradot then Evorel as Estradot is out of stock) and now oestrogel.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with the whole menopause HRT journey you’re on. I’ve just started estradiol (lowest dose patch) and micronised progesterone (May 27 this year) at the age of 59. My periods stopped at age 50! At that time I didn’t have all the info I have now…. but listening to Dr Louise Newson has helped me immensely. Then coming across your channel is giving the confidence to go and see my care provider and request the coil. It’s knowing what to ask for that’s the key . Being informed! Please know you are highly appreciated.

Excited to have found your channel! I have been on hrt for about 3 months. Prior to starting it I was considering antidepressants - was very depressed despite therapy and also struggling with intrusive thoughts. I didn’t realize how much this was due to hormones, and just in the last couple of weeks I have seen a real improvement ( unexpected by me) in these things as well as the usual symptoms. Hello, I love your talks and am going through some of the things you mention. I live in another european country, but I see that this topic and sometimes the lack of updating and knowledge of some doctors is common in all places..... They need to listen to us more on this matter. To our sensations, symptoms, etc. Estrogen is our "Goddess" and it has always been so vital to women that in our ancient past it really was treated as Divine, "Ostara". Thank you for this space of sharing informatio and experiences!❤

You are the only channel on KZfaq that tells how it is not a smooth ride. Every other channel about HRT make it sound as if HRT cures everything and makes women feel like they are 20 again. I am having a really hard time on it. It has been 2.5 months on the Combipatch. I feel like I have PMS, break through spotting every two weeks and sore boobs. Only thing it has helped at this point is hot flashes. I also have high anxiety because I hate spotting and that sets off my anxiety that something is wrong. And I hate feeling like I did before I used to get my period. I think I must be progesterone sensitive and did not even know that was a thing until watching your video. I see my Gyno tomorrow, but took the patch off today. I cannot take it anymore. I am going to talk to her about a coil though. To top it off these patches cost 85.00 a month with insurance, otherwise, they would be 125.00! So I threw away basically 255.00 of my money since this did not work.

Great video. So you completely came off HRT? I have suffered terribly from palpitations and the Oestrogel hasn't fixed it for me. I can't increase the dose because the HRT has made my fibroids worse 😞 I think you make a very important point about external stressors affecting us too. They have recently found out the palpitations for many women are caused by vasomotor symptoms interacting with stress. The stress component is very important!

I'm 60 and been on hrt 10 years . I started on the combined patch and loved it then there was a shortage and also I was wary as the progesterone in it was synthetic. I've been on oestrodot patch and coil then had coil out after 5 year and thought I'd stop and see what happens and within a week the intense heat was back day and night. The gp gave me utrogeston tablets which I was told can use vaginally but even on the patches and coil I still would get heat intolerance at leat once a day . I can't handle it and want to go back on it but would like to go back on the evoril conte again .

A very down-to-earth video, so thank you. My perimenopause has been horrendous. However, HRT has kept me out of the danger zone physically and mentally. It has not changed my life or made me feel 100% like me but it really helps. I think part of the problem is that we can start to experience horrid symptoms during perimenopause when everything is fluctuating wildly. HRT can help but can also add to the discombobulation. I found doctors to be generally useless in knowing what to prescribe - for example, prescribing tablets when I had migraines, which shouldn't be done. Transdermal HRT is the way to go. In the end I did go private and it was worth every penny to get some clear answers and a clear prescription. We should not have to go private and I hope GPs get better at understanding and prescribing (Newson Health training should help). I don't think I will ever feel fully like me again until I get through menopause and reach a more settled stage. As you say, the key is to try and keep things as stable as possible and allow HRT to settle before changing anything.

I just saw your previous video from Spain - glad I found this one which explained a lot for me. I might be progesterone sensitive as I am having a lot of the side effects you described. In addition, I am having weight gain and bloating even though I exercise a lot every day and also something that really bothers me, although some women might not find it objectionable: My boobs have grown 2 sizes and are tender. Have you had this happen to you? I am on the lowest estradiol dose patch - 0.025. The breast fattening drives me insane-I hate it so much, that it’s one of the main reasons I am considering quitting HRT. My only hope is that maybe if I change the progesterone to coil I might not have this side effect, but at the same time am terrified as coil is quite a commitment to it.

Im confused about why the progestin patch made you miserable but the coil didn't? Having PMDD, i just want my period to go away. High dose progesterone helps PMDD but when taken orally it turns into alopregnenalone which the GABA receptors can be sensitive to in PMDD so im not sure if i will do so well with oral which I'm switching to soon because of issues with high dose transdermal progesterone building up in tissues. I feel absolutely horrible on non body identical progestins so bioidentical progesterone is my only opinion and in the US, there is only a pill available that is bioidentical. No transdermal options. Im hoping i can take the pill and use estrogel continuously to stop my period even though im only 36. I am starting perimenopause.

I wish I cpuld get an advice from a good Naturopathic doctor! As someone who has been underweight for several years (anorexia), I've been recommended to try HRT to help with my bone health and hormonal balance. I am very causious as I am still young and do not like taking syntetically made drugs and meds. I am so undecided what to do... The research is very mixed... Also, I worry about the side effects (short term and long term). I believe in nature and our body's ability to heal itselft but HRT also seems promising... What's your point of view on that? :)

Only just found your channel and so glad to have done so 😊 I was started on Evorel Sequi (50 )around 7 months ago and like yourself initially felt some improvement but a couple of months in started to feel worse again so spoke to a GP at my surgery who was a little unsure what to suggest but concluded on my trying adding an extra 25 patch as well to try for a month which I did and did notice an improvement so after this additional pack was nearly used made an appointment to speak to the nurse to request more extra patches as I wanted to continue with this higher dose. The nurse advised she wasn't happy for me to be wearing 2 seperate patches and wasn't sure why the doctor had suggested this and would look into it and called me back a short time after to suggest a low dose SSRI which I declined (and I also do not want a coil) so am a little in limbo as I don't know if the Sequi patches come in 75 dose? (I mean the Conti part of the packs) and ideally I would rather not have tablets (not trying to be picky or awkward but this is about our personal choice over what we take and use). The nurse had suggested the gel in the conversation prior to speaking to the pharmacist who suggested the SSRI as I am still taking Cerazette but am assuming it doesn't contain enough progesterone on its own? Would love to find a workable solution as I don't want to reduce the dose as I have definitely noticed my irritability has returned to 'normal' me instead of dragon me lol I also feel more should be done to educate about menopause in secondary schools as not sure about everyone else but I remember women going through 'the change' being spoken of but never really knowing what it meant till I was much older and think if they can talk about periods and pregnancy this is just as important a subject to also be advised on. Again thank you for your excellent channel and will definitely be visiting your other videos too! Xx

Thank you for this video. Everyone on YT seems to say that HRT is so easy but it's not for a lot of women. They say 10 to 15% have progesterone "intolerance" but I'm wondering if it's not even more. As one of these women, I'm still struggling to find the right dosage / molecule / doctor for the progesterone. All doctors specialised in menopause on YT do not answer to questions regarding progesterone intolerance. And it's even worse with the "regular" GP or gynecologists because they know even less and often don't want to prescribe it. I'm in France, but what I see is that it's the same in the UK and US.

As of right now my hot flashes have completely stopped I’m sleeping better, I’m more motivated my joints don’t ache like they did so I’m happy however the bloating and weight gain isn’t oestrogen is a growth hormone and progesterone is a taken to prevent the growth of the uterine lining so I’m assuming it’s the gel that’s causing the bloating it’s what gave us our curves during puberty and makes use breasts fill out. I’m taking the progesterone vaginaly so it’s not in my bloodstream and is more effective at preventing the lining growth. I’ll keep you updated on my results Fingers crossed this will help someone

Strange how we all react differently. When the merina coil was given to me in my early 30s for contraception and heavy periods, it worked brilliantly but then when I was given it again in my 40s, it made me suicidal! Had to take it out! Estragel gel and progesterone tablets seem to work better for me. I still suffer with terrible fatigue though and I’m also on antidepressants

I started this journey 4 years and 3 months ago. Still trying to get the sleep I need and stop the hot flashes among a few other symptoms. Like you I did not know if I was in menopause yet and the doctor kept trying to treat my hot flashes with estrogen. I thought I might still be in perimenopause because I would bleed heavy and the hot flashes would still be hanging on. I did tell the doctor, I think I might be in perimenopause still, hoping he would explain another way of dealing with the hot flashes and night sweats. Recently I learned that testosterone can also help with these pesky hot flashes. I think the hormones all work so intricately together. Also I have been having terrible bouts of insomnia and the doctor just said to take melatonin. I recently learned again testosterone can help with this as well. I would like to know if I am still perimenopausal so treatment and relief would be more efficient. If they do an ultra sound will they be able to tell if I am still in perimenopause?

A scan could show if you still have egg-producing follicles - that's how I know my right ovary is still active (dammit!). Adding flaxseed to your diet is a good way to help with hot flashes. I have been on an Estrogen only hrt patch since the beginning of post menopause, which was confirmed by bloodwork that checked my hormone levels. I have had the milligrams increased once but never had any issues with it at all. I recently found out that my testosterone is undetectable in my bloodwork and tried a specially compounded cream with testosterone in it (because testosterone isn’t approved for women) and I broke out in hives all over my body. I’ve decided to stick with my patches and not do anything else.

I live in the US. I have been on .05 Estrogen patch and 100 oral progesterone for almost a year now. Been post menopausal for two years. I’m 53. It changed my life over night. I had to ask for it and stand firm on it. It’s astounding to me how doctors aren’t really trained in the area of menopause. I believe the benefits of HRT are helping to prevent osteoporosis and heart disease. It basically cuts out having to go to multiple doctors for each health issue. It’s all about the money. Sad to say. Just my opinion.

Hi SecretSandra1 - Persist! It can take up to 3 months for HRT to settle into your body. Most people start feeling a difference about 3-4 weeks in. Your GP should have told you that!

I am not sure if it was progesterone. I was on this Prometrium 100mg per day for a month and I ended up feeling horrible. My mental clarity became worse and my balance and coordination went down the drain. I felt absolutely down in the dumps. Maybe I was on too high a dose of estrogen at the same time. I completely stopped the HRT and want my body to reset itself. I feel much better now but tiredness is taken its toll on me. I am really feeling very awful.

Where do I start. I'm on Utrogestan 1 pill and Everol 50 patches and I feel like sh*te. I was put on venlafaxine in 2018 because I was diagnosed with breast cancer and taken off HRT immediately. I basically wish they had left me alone with my HRT. My BC was found in a routine mammogram and due to having very dense breast tissue, my GP has always told me to keep an eye on it and have my mammograms. Back then there was a scare that HRT causes breast cancer which is not the case. So here I am today. I wanted to come off venflaxine which is an anti depressant, and fix the hot flushes and feeling horrible problem with hrt. Back in the day I was on femerston conti but they now recommend the body identical Utrogestan and Oestrogen patches. Well as far as I'm concerned these things make me feel worse. I'm about to go back to my GP and ask for something else. Maybe I should try the gel and the coil, I have no idea but something has to be done. Thanks for sharing your experience. Can I ask what you're on now? Coil and gel? I'm going to pay privately to get the testosterone for women too that you can get in Australia but not yet here. Maybe that's the missing piece of the puzzle, who knows 🤷🏽‍♀️
