You ever try zeolite for biological filtration? If you have it in lower flow under 50 gph it does a great job at converting nitrate to nitrogen gas and of course ammonia to nitrite to nitrate will still happen. You never really have to replace it either unless you want to use it not only for biological but as say carbon since it will also trap heavy metals and toxins from the water but once the caton cages are full they don't release that stuff so it will still be ultra high surface area and biological filtration then. Seachems denitrate is a good example. It's just a sized zeolite. I honestly don't know why everyone doesn't use zeolites they are amazing cheap and last forever.

Christopher Rector hopefully you only have a couple. I have feeder fish too and my smallest one is 6 inches. I've got 3 in a 30 gallon tank thought it was closer to 40 when I got it but it's more like 30. was second hand so wasn't labeled (getting one that's 100 gallons here soon one they're in is just temporary) but my big one is going on 4 years old and a little over 10 inches lol. they're gonna get that big 100 gallon to themselves. I do plan on adding a decent amount to decorate. since mine like to hide. And might as well go with some plants even if they eat them. it's for the fish anyway lol

Hey Joey, You might want to feed your fish something other then the Hikari stuff… You are paying a premium for some of the cheapest ingredients, like soy and corn. May I suggest Omega One Goldfish pellets, which cost about the same as the Hikari and has much better ingredients. This food contains no corn or soy flour. It does however contain lecithin, which is derived from soy. I have been feeding Omega One Goldfish for a while and my goldfish love it. Just for clarification, I am not being paid by Omega One to say this, I am just a customer who likes their fish food. Hikari only says it uses fish meal, but it doesn’t specify what fish are used. Omega One says what fish it uses. The fact that the Hikari food contains DL-methinine suggests that the fish meal they use is of poor quality. If they were using good quality fish they wouldn’t need to add this. This is something the cat and dog food industry has been adding for years because they too use inferior meat products in their foods as well. You might as well be feeding your fish cat food… Hikari also just says “vitamins and minerals” but doesn’t specify which are being used. Omega One tells you everything they use. Here’s a breakdown of the two fish foods’ ingredients so you can decide for yourself. Hikari Goldfish Gold Ingredients: Fish meal, flaked corn, wheat flour, soybean meal, krill meal, gluten meal, enzyme, DL-methionine, canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, garlic, monosodium glutamate, and vitamins and minerals including stabilized Vitamin C. Omega One Goldfish Ingredients: Whole Salmon, Whole Herring, Whole Shrimp, Wheat flour, Wheat Gluten, Fresh Kelp, Lecithin, Astaxanthin, L-Ascorbyl-2-Phosphate (Source of Vitamin C), Natural and Artificial Colors, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Folic Acid, Biotin, Inositol, Tocopherol (Preservative), Ethoxyquin (Preservative).

I know I'm not the king, but I've heard of bristlenose and rubberlip plecos being kept with goldfish, but I've also heard to Never keep a common pleco with goldfish. Commons can get to over a foot in length when they're an adult and can also be semi-aggressive. Not to mention, if they don't get their dietary/ space requirements, they may go after your goldfish and sucker onto them like a lamprey.

It's a great-looking tank, and I think it's really good that an experienced, publicly-visible aquarist is dedicating time and a major tank space to fancy goldfish. It helps to dispel the notion that these are fish "just for beginners" or any of those related stigmas that seem to come with some kinds of fish(goldfish, bettas, some livebearers, etc.). A question about your feeding: are you feeding a combination of all of those pellets at one time, or do you just select a single bag at random at feeding time?
@thekingofdiy
@thekingofdiy 7 жыл бұрын
+Brad Simpson i just randomly select the food. Usually different every feeding.

VixX Sweets This is another excellent point, although generally, I've seen the once-ubiquitous goldfish/betta bowl fall by the wayside. Hi Joey, My issue was water flow and detritus. I have a 150-gallon tank (5'x2'x2') with 2 Oscars in it and I've realised that these beautiful fish are HEAVY waste makers lol. My issue was keeping the mess off the substrate and get it to the power filter intakes. I ended up using 2 power heads placed in separate positions (one at the back and one at the front on the opposite side of the tank from my filter intakes) to push the detritus along the base of the tank to the intakes with much success. My real question starts here. I'm upgrading my filtration as my beauties are getting larger and putting out a larger bioload, to an overflow and sump system. How do I get the detritus to stay in the water column to get sucked up by the overflow, so it goes down to my sump? The overflow skims the surface of my tank. Someone told me to aim the power head straight down to kick up the detritus, but that'll just disturb my sand bed. Another person suggested a powerful air pump and airstone below the overflow to get the detritus up. What are your thoughts on the issue? Keeping in mind that the Oscar waste is larger and heavier than other fish. Thanks for all the great info and keep up the great work. Strangely, they're not many videos on KZfaq addressing this issue.

Hello Joey, have an important question in regards to your old video "DIY CO2 for Aquarium". May i ask after finalizing everything and kick start, for the weekly replacement, do you simply just pour away some of the current mixture for CO2 by adding yeast and baking soda, or will you have to pour away everything and just do the mixture of solution with water, sugar, yeast and baking soda from scratch every 7 days? Many thanks! Loving your goldfish setup btw :)

I'm new to the hobby. About a month and a half. Right now, I have a goldfish in a 10 gallon planted tank with some neon tetras, an oto, and a snail. All are doing great, but I know that the goldfish will need its own 20 gallon tank in the long-run. The plants are great, but having dirt below the the gravel can be a pain getting in the way of cleaning sometimes. I was thinking of a bare bottom or sanded tank for the 20 gallon and then just some floating duckweed and/or crystalwort for the plants. How has your sand faired as far as the poop on the sand goes (the look of it, I mean)? Does it get ugly, or has it been alright? I'd love to do a sanded substrate, but I don't want it to be ugly-looking. I know you get a ton of mail, but if you have time, let me know. Thanks! :)

Have you ever made an aquarium when you start with the bottom piece of glass, then instead of putting the next upright piece of glass on top of the bottom piece of glass, you glue it to the side of the bottom piece of glass. Then put the third piece of glass on the side of the bottom and the other upright piece of glass. Then finish the aquarium by gluing the other two upright pieces of glass the same way as the other two pieces of glass. You should put glue on the bottom piece of glass on all four of its sides. You should pick an end piece of glass and glue the two sides of glass, and same for the other side. That is eight sides of the aquarium that needs glue. You can also use acrylic the same way as the glass aquarium. I’m trying to be thorough as possible, and not trying to confuse you. You should try building a tank this way. Thanks, have a good week.

Nice to meet someone who understands the needs of veil-tail goldfish. I like your builds a lot. Veil-tail goldfish need an aquarium with a minimum of 1,2m in lenght since they can grow up to 30cm a piece. Normal goldfish are even more demanding and require 3+ meters in lenght in order to have enough swimming room. Normal goldfish can grow over 40cm a piece. A veil-tail goldfish can reach an age of 20+ years easily when held in an proper aquarium like this one. A medium to large pond with 1m+ in depth is also suitable for goldfish. Fish bowls and small aquaria are pure torture for (veil-tail)goldfish because they don't provide the proper amount of room for swimming. The goldfish adjust their size to their surrounding but the internal organs keep growing which kills the fish eventually when held in a bowl or aquarium too small. A lot of people don't realize this when buying goldfish in the stores. Please spread the word.

Trickle down filters with ball media for good bacteria to grow are even often used in largescale wastewater treatment today. Some wastewater treatment facilities will have a few 20' diameter silos full of the media for water to run through. It's interesting to see how similar these processes are and how smallscale borrows from it.

If you're cycling a brand-new tank and have no existing media to seed a new filter with, you can use cleaning ammonia, as long as it doesn't contain any dyes or surfactants. Find a 10% ammonia solution, and every 1mL of that will contain 0.1mL of ammonia. Figure out the volume of your tank in litres(1 US gallon = 3.785L), and dose to 4ppm ammonia. Test your ammonia and nitrite levels daily. Maintain 5ppm ammonia in your tank until the nitrite level starts to rise, at which point dial back to maintaining 1ppm. Once the nitrite levels have peaked and dropped back down to zero, continue to dose 1ppm ammonia to feed the bacterial colonies. The day before you are going to add fish to the tank, dose 2ppm ammonia in the morning and test the water 12 hours later. There should be no detectable levels of ammonia or nitrite. Do a big water change to drop your nitrate levels down below 10ppm(the lower the better, unless you're messing around with planted tanks) after doing your water test, and go off to the aquarium shop the next day and buy fish. I've never known a tank to take longer than a month cycling, although it depends on your water chemistry, the media you're using, the flow rate of your filter, and a handful of other variables. The key is to remain patient through the whole thing, and not screw around trying to add fish too early. And leave the lights off while the tank cycles, or even cover it with a blanket. That'll prevent a serious algae outbreak at the outset.

It would be interesting to explain how you position the filter outlets so as not to create dead zones in your aquarium. Thanks

These fish seem to be happier and less frantic compared to the ones I've seen in smaller tanks. It goes to show that even with goldfish it helps to have a bigger tank.

I'd like to see you add a couple giant goldies to the tank? I don't know if they can go with the smaller fancies, but if they can you so should!
