I'm 73, been doing BJJ for 10 weeks, 48 training days. I started with a low back injury that was about 90 percent resolved but it is still problematic and much of the strength one needs to escape is in the back. When it revolts I have to tap or sit out for a bit, we will see how it goes.

@@skintback8211 Wish I had started at 45 but I had other endeavors. 73 is a bit late but I'm having fun, trying to not injure myself any more than I already am.

Respect! Also, keep this in mind. Yeah, those younger more athletic guys might beat you, but you're still the baddest 73yo around. Also, if you keep training, 73/4 or not; you will still be able to beat those young guys when they are new white belts. That means you'll be able to dominate people that don't train. ...AT SEVENTY FREAKING THREE! lol. That ain't too shabby, brother!

I'm a purple belt. 45 years old. Yesterday was the first time I recorded myself rolling. I was amazed at how many flaws I noticed right away. Since then I have 1000 new goals for my training. If I hadn't recorded it, it would have taken me a long, long time to realize all of this!

Probably a good idea, but I can't stand to watch myself roll. I watched a video of my last IBJJF comp, and while I won, I feel like I looked horrific. At 47 years old, it may be just a slower process.

This is an excellent idea. I did this when I was learning fencing and it was a game changer. Anything specific you noticed that you can share? 45 year old purple… much respect.

62 years old, three stripe purple belt, I recorded myself also .. I wasn’t too happy when I viewed myself but then again, I’m always very hard on myself after rolling.. but then I have a remember most 62-year-old are sitting on the couch watching westerns so I’m 100% better than they are

Glad to hear you say that more intensity is not the path to progress, but technical and strategic solutions are. I wish I had known that years ago.

The other thing about our training partners is they're learning the same curriculum we are. One way to test out current skill levels against others is visiting other place's open mats or competing. And as mentioned in the video - play around with new things! I've been trying to tell myself to *just stand up*, disengage/transition, or be extra defensive to not let someone score on me 🤙

4:45 - this is 100% where I’m at now. 1.5 years in and I’m realizing that I was relying on a set of moves that were high pressure and static with very little flow. My coach said that flow and less “power” was where I needed to concentrate. Luckily I have some new tools that I learned over the summer but, as I learn to use them effectively, I’m getting caught a lot. This video has come out at JUST the right time. Thank you for this.

I don’t think I’ll ever get good. I got my blue belt a year ago and since then I think I’m worse than ever

Great video as always. I'm keen on your thoughts on getting 'rougher' the higher up you get. What I mean is I find BJJ less enjoyable the more advanced you get and the game changes from "fun play" to the game of inches for position. I hope that makes sense?

Another amazing piece professor Rick. You seem to always speak to me in someway on your videos. See you in Costa Rica in a few weeks. Maybe we will have enough time for a private class. 👊🏼

Great 👍🏼 video - old 3 stripe purple here - I find doing research on each challenge is very helpful e.g. if I couldn’t finish that fist choke I look up videos regarding the details, if I got caught in a calf slicer I start searching for calf slicer crush defense, and I’m always looking for new setups for the techniques I like to use like wristlocks (millions of setups).

the timing on this one's funny - I was talking to my coach over the last couple of weeks about being on one of those plateaus again and feeling stuck. he worked with me through a few things and I started feeling ok again, and last week he gave me a stripe after a class & open mat. I've found that when those plateaus hit, it's very often right before you find yourself suddenly plugging in a piece you were missing before. (ymmv, etc.)

I just got back from class we did some live rolls after the end of class. i did four 3-minute rounds with 2 training partners. 6 months in and I feel like I still don't really know anything. both times I was easily put in full mount, and subbed. I just feel like I'm making no progress. I'm not going to quit I just needed to vent lol. very frustrated. going to start training 4 days a week instead of 3, don't know if more mat time will help, but I'm definitely not progressing at the moment.

Like 50% of the reason I even have a channel is so I can watch my rolls from anywhere. It's definitely one of the ways my game improves most.

I've been grappling early 2000s, so I count my journey not by days, or months, or weeks or years, but in decades. Then at some point, I just stop counting. There are area where I have increased so much that I no longer need to drill or go over the moves, then there are a few blind spot, you know those point of rupture that lags since years ? I still work on em, and the fun is that there is always something to learn. I boxed 25 years, and there is no worst feeling than knowing that boxing has nothing more to offer me. But BJJ is interesting cause its a never ending quest.

I feel like I am constantly regressing. I have been a blue belt for three years, and I feel like I was better at the beginning of blue belt than I am three years later. I see a lot of stuff during others rolls, and I see it when I am rolling, but actually being able to get where I need or want to be seems to be the issue.

Well my jujitsu is not the best but that's only because I've only just started a couple of months ago. So right now I'm just learning all the moves so I'm not expected to actually be really good at it until I get my blue belt which will probably be a while

I believe this is all in the mind. If you don’t skip training. I was telling a colleague a short while ago that I thought my BJJ was going backwards. Just after that my professor awarded me my brown belt. For me this came out of nowhere! He obviously sees things from a different perspective. Oh yeah. Im 61 years old and started at the ripe old age of 52/53. I plan to train 6 times pw but mostly it’s 4 times.
