BJJ is not only hard when it comes to injuries, but it’s even harder when you are 50 years old and have an autoimmune disease that is always attacking your joints to one extent or another. Because of this, I don’t roll hard anymore. Most of my rolls are just “flow rolls” and I pick my partners *very* carefully. It’s either that, or just don’t do BJJ.

I am going 70 years old in 2 years, I have the same mentality of picking the right partner, rolling technically and artistically. Older age can not afford injuries and stop exercise for long time. Injures will eventually keep older people out of bjj practice!

I just watched class and rolls yesterday. Pulled a muscle two weeks ago and it's still real sore. I wish I would have participated, though. A technique was covered that I could have done as it didn't involve much use of my injured part. However, I made several notes and learned a few new-to-me details, so I'm really glad I went vs. just staying home. It's also good to see the group. Recently I spent over a month on the sideline with an injury I sustained away from my gym. It's tough missing, but I watched every day that I normally train and learned a lot. Also, as mentioned in this video, my coach sat with me several times and I enjoyed one on one chats that I would not have had otherwise. I agree 100% with the advice to watch class if you can't train.

Brown belt 55….Pace yourself for sure. Try to distinguish between real injury and hurt and just aches and pains. Common sense . I’ve had all the injuries but I just keep going. Mentally pushing through when possible. I eliminate other things as well like the gym if necessary. Just focus purely on technique and Jujitsu. Mental side is everything. Keep showing up Perfect video

I have to fly out for a vacation to Europe in a week, I took it as light as possible, almost did nothing. Now I have had agonizing tendonitis pain in my right foot for the past three days, if this thing doesn't get better in a week, I'm completely screwed. It happens everytime I have closed guard and they get up and I hold the guard. I'm super annoyed, I'm seriously debating quitting BJJ. Blue belt here.

I am 51, gone thru spinal fusion with 2 implants (2022) and cycle reaching 90% heartbeat (competitive), not so flexible as before 5’6” at 150lbs. I smoke and drink (moderate). It all comes down to my goals in BJJ, not sure what I want from it. Any advise?

Great video Rick, I have had a range of serious injuries the past couple of years. I agree with keeping your mind in the game and study class rolls. Visualisation is the 🥇☝🏽 In April I took training in my own hands, before going back to class. I would just drill with a friend who wanted to get back to Jiu Jitsu, once or twice a week. I taught him all of my A-Game and what I was developing for my B and C. I also got to develop a great rear triangle and sneaky arm bar setups over this time. Now I have started to coach kids 2 times a week and back on the mats❤️🙏🏽👊🏽

The age and weight divisions in competitions are there for a reason. If you are a white belt, just learning to walk the path of BJJ, stay away from young, enthusiastic white belts, especially those that are heavier than you. In BJJ, consistency pays off better than effort. It’s more productive to roll at 50% power every day instead of 100% on and off, taking recovery time in between.

Great video. I injured my shoulder 3 weeks ago and I've only trained once. I went to an urgent appointment to get muscle relaxers. I'm going again to get x-rays, MRI and a CT exam to make sure that I didn't tear my rotator cuff. I've learned that as a 55 year old 1 stripe white belt that you can't go 100% without the proper techniques to match. I'm stretching also. Great video.

I don't care what anyone says, but I don't roll hard. I just don't. I don't care if I get to blackbelt. I've been training bjj for about 5 years. I refuse to get injuries these days. I've had a couple of popped ribs, a broken thumb, and some neck stuff. It's been at least a couple of years since I've had any injuries, and I've decided to keep it that way. If there's an explosive, young, strong white belt, I just play defense and try to survive. I work on my judo takedowns, but I don't crazy with them. I'm in my 40s, and there's no reason to get injuries at this stage. I don't want hip replacements, disc replacements, or any of that stuff. I want to remain healthy and strong, and if that means going a bit lighter in my rolls from here on out, so be it.

The nice thing about Jiu Jitsu is with enough training you can become very effective at a sub maximal pace. I rarely match the intensity of my training partners.

You're mischarecterizing GJJ. At least the GJJ I've done we did reflex development drills that involved rising levels of resistance in self defense scenarios, and had rounds of punching because the number one self defense scenario is bunches of punches. Like ok, sports jiu-jitsu is better than nothing and better than most. But my point is, you're really under valuing what we actually train and practice in self defense jj.

Just recently, a year ago, started training BJJ again, at 50. I appreciate your channel as it gives me faith that if I stay on the path, enjoying the journey, and being open to learn and grow, I will get better! I’d love to spend the rest of my life training, and maybe one day teaching, BJJ. Thank you… 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

The hypothesis that angiogenesis would be beneficial for cancer tumors is decades old, and there is good evidence that the opposite is true. The evidence comes from a major cancer drug Avastin, which is anti-VEGF (the other angiogenesis growth factor that you mentioned). It turns out that blood vessels around tumors are disorganized, so tumors already don’t have good blood flow. This means that neither your own immune system nor chemo therapies get into the tumor well. So why does Avastin work if it’s supposed to stop blood vessels? Apparently it instead leads to better organized blood vessels and more blood flow (not less).

This is how we do it. Maybe 2-3 minutes of some basic streatching then we partner up and do 20 arm bars, 20 triangles, 20 umas, and 20 side control conversions. I usually have a good sweat going by then. Then it;s off to the daily lesson.

53 years old, been training for 9 months. Enjoying the heck out of the journey, but my body isn’t keeping up with what I want it to do. Back, r shoulder, l hand and l calf is giving me trouble, atm. I’d love put in four classes and four open mat sessions per week and get my blue belt before 54, but … there’s just no way I could. Trying something like that would get me too injured to train within a month, or tops two. I have to constantly be alert for new warnings from the old rustbucket I’m operating, and then I have write reverse to-do lists to force myself to back off and go light and slow and take rest days and so on and so forth. It is what it is, and if nothing big changes I’m calculating blue belt in 3-5 years. But that’s a significant “if”. We’ll see what happens.

At 33 yr old ex football player (Offensive Lineman) here, I'm already hurting more than I should after 10 round Tuesday. I realized quite fast there's only so many gym battles you can get in on some particularly brutal mats at my gym. I'm prioritizing drilling and being deliberate about how many of those Tuesday death matches I engage in. Or just break more between tough rounds like that.

I came to verify what the difference is between a heel hook, and leg lock. My professor says not heel hooks, but I tried a leg lock the other day, and he seemed to get mad about it, although three blie belts have done it to me, and told me that it's okay to do. Why woukd bkue belts be able to do leg locks to me as a white belt, and I wouldn't be abld to do it to them?

I am not willing to be put in bad position even to keep it playful. That is how I get hurt. Stay on top as much as possible. Tap immediately to any good submission. Use frames and submissions. I admit that I do let whites and blues tap me out so they gain confidence when I feel safe. Follow the hip. I will give that a go.
