~HEADPHONES RECOMMENDED~
My Jolly Sailor Bold is an old sailors song/love song that I first heard while watching ''Pirates of The Caribbean:On Stranger Tides'', when a mermaid (in the movie mermaids have siren-like qualities) tried to seduce and drown a pirate.
Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including the Near East, Europe, Asia, and Africa. They are sometimes associated with perilous events such as floods, storms, shipwrecks, and drownings, like sirens do. In other folk traditions (or sometimes within the same tradition), they can be benevolent or beneficent, bestowing boons or falling in love with humans.
I thus tried to give it a touch of darkness, as if the song is sung by a mermaid or a siren under the waves. I also added some soft sea sounds in the background.
Let me know if you enjoy this kind of music!

I was always told sirens were born from violent watery deaths, and mermaids from gentle deaths. I think a broken heart can count as violent. edit: for the people telling me im wrong, thats the story i grew up with and was taught, others may be different, but in my family thats how its taught.

A water nymph(what we see in Pirates of the Caribbean) on the other hand wants to drown a sailor Those are both seen as mothers archtypes the guarding mermaid and the destroying(not loving) water nymph. Hope that cleared it a bit up 🙃 Ps. Im swiss so probably a lot wrong written xD

this song makes me think of a woman who's husband was a sailor and on one of his expiditions she became sick and eventually died alone the last thing she saw and heard was the ocean that her husband loved more than her and so she was reborn as a siren luring sailors like her husband who left there homes and likely families behind in favor of the sea. eventualy she runs into her husband again and reveals her self and drowns him making it so he and the ocean he loved more than her were always together and making the face of the woman he loved but abandoned the last thing he ever saw.

Fun fact! Greek sirens were actually birdlike and not fishlike! They had wings, and bird feet! The sirens as we know them today come from an Anglo-Latin catalogue from the 7th century that describes them having fish tails instead, which is where we get our modern interpretation of mermaids/sirens!

This is what i imagine: A female, young, standing in the main hall of a castle (the hall being empty whilst corridors and other rooms are occupied) she starts singing this, her voice rings out powerful and bold in the still air. Her voice can be heard from all about the castle, everyone who hears it stops, their feet almost seemingly weighed to the floor, they look everywhere for the voice their hearts becoming heavy. Then when the infamous part comes (my heart was pierced by cupid i disdain all glittering gold..) she begins to walk into the corridors full of people (still singing) with everyone glued to the spot she walks past her voice even more powerful in the stillness. Her footsteps and her voice the only sounds. She gains on the endof the corridor and slowely her voice and body fade until shes completely gone the endof her song hanging lightly on the air. Its kinda cheesy but thats one of the many things i can imagine.... edit: i didnt expect to get this many likes, thanks though :)

There's something extremely luring about this song. It's no coincidence that there's men in the comment section completely hypnotised by the melody. Old folktale lyrics regarding lost love, accentuated with a soft female vocal would catch anyone's attention. But there's an undercurrent of danger submerged beneath its soft lullaby that serves to intrigue the psyche of the male mind. There's a subtle aura of cunning, deception, apprehension and deceit, discreetly hidden beneath the velvety veil of a hauntingly beautiful feminine vocal. There's an amalgamation between feelings of gentleness, nurture and trust, with feminine sensuality and sultry seductiveness, but also contrasting with more insidious undertones. Basically, if you love a man and you want to lure him in, just sing this to him and watch him become obsessed with you.

LYRICS: Upon one summer's morning I carelessly did stray Down by the Walls of Whapping where I met a sailor gay Conversing with a young lass who seemed to be in pain, saying 'William when you go i fear you never return again' His hair ti does in ringlets hang his eyes as black as sloes, may happiness attend him wherever he may go From Tower Hill to Blackwall i will wander weap and moan, all for my Jolly Sailor bold until he does return My father is a merchant the truth i will now tell and in great London City in opulence doth well Hid fortune does exceed 300,00 pounds in gold and he frowns upon his daughter because she loves a sailor bold Come all you pretty fair maids, whoever you may be if you love a Jolly Sailor bold that ploughs the raging sea While up aloft in storm or gale To me his absence mourn, and firmly pray arrive the day he home will safe return My name it is Maria, a merchant's daughter fair, and i have left my parents and three thousand pounds a year My heart is pierced by Cupid, i disdain all glittering gold, there is nothing that can console me, but my Jolly Sailor Bold.

This either sounds like a siren/mermaid luring sailors to their death. Or my preference being the sea or other mermaids singing. Inviting scorned or aching women into the waves and to become a mermaid or siren. To enacted revenge if they died at sea. Or to simply easy their heart ache and pain.

Recently, my heart was deeply broken by a soldier. We started as a good friend, until he met his old love again, when we were hanging out together. The girl's friend told me how they have a long history. What can I do if I am only a part of that history. My heart was shattered to pieces when I saw those hands, that I just held the day before, holding someone else's hand. I was just left by the street, picked up by a stranger. Sometimes, I still feel like crying out loud from the top of my lung but I know I should not. This song makes me feel calmer and stronger at the same time. It just reminds me of those mermaids, being calm, and only attack when the right time comes.

According to greek myths and effigies, sirens were women with the body of a bird (which makes sense, since birds sing, fishes doesn't XD). But also, according to some discoveries, sirens were usually depicted in some objects like pots or gravestones, during burial rituals. Few believed sirens sang for the souls of the dead, guiding them through the Hades and making them forget their lives, so they could accept to move on the otherworld. Now, just imagine this... in the last days of your life, you're slowly losing energy, senses, will... you're dying, in the end. And in your last minutes, you start to hear this soft, soothing hum... it's distant, initially, but slowly fills your ears, gradually becoming all you can hear. Your sight doesn't work anymore and you can only see a vast plain of darkness, a black abyss. You see nothing... until you can spot her, swimming (or floating? You can't clearly understand) to you. She's the one who's singing for you, a creature you can't clearly see perfectly, but she's there, for you, singing hypnotically. Your soul slowly melts to her sight and voice, and the fear of the death disappear completely. Everything is fine, everything is okay. You can let her lead you to the other side.

I'm not sure how many people here believe in "reincarnation", however I'm going to throw myself on those that understand it. I've lived many lives, one of which was lived as a former merchant of the sea, (whom eventually turned "pirate" for a short time before being killed at sea). Long ago, "mermaids" and "sirens" were actually the same thing. The only difference being that "sirens" were more found on land, while "mermaids" were the "sirens" of the sea. Both were believed to use their voices/songs to lure men to their death. Also, while this song WAS made more modernly noticed by the world, through the "Pirates of The Caribbean" film, it is an actual song from that time period.

Swim to me he tried but the waves of foam to high, dragging him deep down the water where my broken heart now lies

This is very beautiful, I’ve always been attracted to the lure of mermaids and sirens since I was a child. What a beautiful song , I’m glad I found a different and equally great cover . I was only familiar with Erutan’s version.

I don't know why I didn't pay this attention during the movie as many times as I have watched it, but this song my jolly sailor bold is so sad. I am watching Pirates of the Caribbean: on Stranger Tides now and I really paid attention to the song so much I had to Google it and get the name. Once I did I found this video and I read the words and it's just as I thought this song is sad and heart breaking with a whole lot of meaning to it, to the point that I have tears in my eyes and my heart is heavy for Maria. Thank you for opening my eyes to this song and the words, the extras that you added to this, the sounds of the ocean and the way it sounds like the mermaid is singing under water. You did this beautifully. 👍👍👍👍 thumbs up all the way.
