Yes, learning a new golf swing is a journey. After struggling with the conventional golf swing to the point I almost quit playing, I was introduced to Moe Norman - known as the worlds greatest ball-striker.
Noticing Moe's simple golf swing motion, I went on a journey to learn his golf swing. This video is a gift for donors to the Moe Norman Documentary - The Feeling of Greatness. It explains my Journey with Moe Norman and discovering the Single Plane Golf swing - and how I am now sharing it with others.

I'll never forget the day I met the great Moe Norman at the Canadian Open. I was watching the players in the practice area and this man came up to me and asks me if I'm enjoying the Canadian Open and a bunch of small talk. Then all of a sudden Payne Stewart came up to us and said. Hey Moe can you show me something on the practice tee. That's when I realised I was just talking to the great Moe Norman.I'll never forget that encounter with this golf legend.

I noticed when Moe sets up to the ball that he places the club head well behind the ball. To strike the ball from that position forces you to transfer your weight to the front foot and lean into the ball at impact which creates backspin and solid contact because you are hitting the ball first and then taking your divot. Love This!!

In the Legend of Bagger Vance, he tells Junuh that everyone has their own authentic swing. I think that is why Moe is the greatest ball striker ever. He didn't attempt to copy anyone else's swing. He perfected his authentic swing.

This happened! At the range last night……pushing, slicing the ball trying everything and anything to hit the ball even just reasonable. I had watched a 2 part Moe youtube vid the night before and said what the heck. As best I could understand I tried to mimic the “Moe” swing. Hit a few not bad………it got a little better….better. Took out my driver and started hitting for me wonderful drives. So intrigued I got another extra large bucket and started smoking them really straight and for me long, was thrilled. I will now convert to this “quirky” way to hit the ball and it starts right here with this really great vid by Todd Graves. It is the beginning of June. Let me look at the results by Sept. and I will let you know on this post what happened. My official handicap is 13, which means I am at best mediocre. See you in the fall.

Todd, this is the best instructional video I've ever seen. You hit shot after shot after shot after shot, straight... I've watched many other golfers (KZfaq golfers) and they NEVER hit the ball straight. NEVER. It's always a draw or a fade... Never have I seen such consistent straight shots... period! "The Perfect golf setup..." "Get rid of your slice!" "How to get more power with a better takeaway" All of those are just straight nonsense when I see how you consistently strike the ball true and drive it down the fairway.. AND IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT CLUB YOU HAVE!! I have an old Persimmon head Powerbilt Citation club. I ABSOLUTELY love the club but can't hit worth a damn with it, other than if I want to hit a slice.. Then you pick up a regular 460CC driver and BOOM drive it down the fairway straight... put it down and pick up a 5 iron.. Same thing... then an old 190CC Persimmon head driver and CRACK there it does... down the fairway 240 yards of greatness.... THAT'S what I want to do! AMAZING swing! I just have one question... Can I see you strike a 1-iron?

One of the most influential golf videos I have seen. Just brilliant. I was completely and utterly engrossed the whole time. I don’t know why this swing isn't used by everyone. My handicap got down to 10.9, then I had conventional lessons, now it's out to 18. After becoming increasingly frustrated with my terrible ball striking and inconsistency I now can't wait to rebuild my swing Moe Norman style. Thanks Todd, you're a legend mate.

Greatest lesson here: moes mentality. It doesnt matted how yoy swing, if you know youll hit it well, and you let go of control, you gain the ability to hit it well and have all the control. Many golf psychologist will agree. From green to tee, you need moes mentality.

Great Video Todd Graves! I met Moe several times in the early 90's then got to play/hang with him when he came up to DeBary Golf & C.C. He was easy to love Not pretentious and I think he dressed to annoy stuffy people. The worlds first Punk Golfer and the best ball-striker I have ever seen along with Hogan.. . I want to say 1995, He was so gracious, hilarious, helpful and I saw him do things that I don't think anyone could possibly match, hitting balls on the range and landing three balls in a row right on top of the first one. I got such a kick out of how he mischievously showed off like you mentioned "I know I'm good" and yet not at all arrogant. What a blessing of it was to catch some of his sunshine and I can imagine you feel fortunate to have spent so much time with that man. Great to see your video and loved it!.(P.S. I hate you for how pure you are hitting it!, :p -(j/k)

Before I discovered Moe, I had been going through what I like to call "the swing desert". Just nothing but endlessly traveling on an unclear path from one swing tip to the next, never seeming to get anywhere but always exhausted. Spent a year being pretty much unable to play, because I simply could not find a swing that I could be consistent with. It was a serendipitous moment. I was scrolling through swing tip videos online and came across a clip of Moe's TV demonstration in '94. Something about him, and something about his swing just sang a lovely tune to me and I figured I'd follow the music to wherever it led to - what did I have to lose at that point? Nothing , I thought to myself; I couldn't get worse if I tried, so it's all uphill from here. I went out to the range later that day after doing some more research on his technique, and it was the damnedest thing - all of a sudden, I was hitting more good shots than bad ones. Naturally, I still struggled with it but after discovering Kirk Junge's minimalist single plane system (he was a student of Moe, and taught his swing for many years) everything came together. Now when I stand over the ball, I have a strong sense of confidence that the ball will do what I tell it to do. It doesn't always follow my instructions to the letter, occasionally it takes some creative license and wanders offline a bit. Sometimes it gets downright rebellious and changes the whole plan on me, but it doesn't take much to dissuade it from that sort of behavior - just a few solid practice swings are enough to bring everything back into balance.

Great job Todd, I’m 59 years old and play golf 3 times a week, I switched from a conventional swing to the single plane method because I wanted to be more consistent and to reduce stress on my lower back. It’s been about one month since the change, while I haven’t perfected the single plan, the results have been great. Broke 70 for the first time on my home course (hilly and tight course) which I normally shoot 76-78. I’ll continue to practice the techniques, it’s a continuous learning process!

Hearing someone a bit older than me gives me hope I can also learn this swing and I am already doing it partly. I like to tilt a lot to my right. So I will have to change my downswing and knee flexion. Start my address with the club 2 feet behind the ball. In and up on the backswing. Beautiful.

Hi Todd. This was a good summary that will help me. I have your book and have been swinging single plain for a few years. I understood your explanations because I have been around your material for a while. What I am trying to say is you left a lot of nuggets in this production that for me will help. Namely that the swing needs to always go into a stable lead knee with the trail leg down so that the straightness is maintained of the club face and a consistent low point is its additional by product. I have met people who met Moe and they always say he was a nice guy. You indeed should be celebrated for preserving his legacy and swing method. May you stay blessed and achieve your dreams 10x greater than your wildest dreams!

Basically your arms from your shoulders to the grip of the club form a triangle, and the club head is an extention of the pendulum. On the way back that triangle gets distorted while staying on the plane line, then on the down swing the triangle becomes less distorted. All this with the addition of the swing balances the body.... Man, wrapping your head around this is crazy. I'll be back out there next week with these thoughts on the driving range.

I'm a 55 year old casual golfer now but 25 years ago I played a lot and was a 4 handicapper. I played last weekend and my ball striking was the worst it has been in a very long time. I hit some balls into my golf net the day after playing and noticed that I was hitting everything near the hosel. No matter what I did I keep hitting it everywhere except in the center of the clubface. Frustrated, I finally decided I was going to do whatever it took to hit the center of the clubface. I ending up minimizing my body movement and holding my arms straighter out toward the ball and immediately I starting striking the ball clean in the center of the clubface (sort of like the swing you are using). My lesson learned was that I (like most people I believe) didn't realize how inaccurately I was returning the clubface to the ball and how much it was affecting my shot. I'm glad I found your channel and have subscribed. Thanks!

I have been looking at lots of swing videos lately (because of how poorly my swing has degenerated) and yours just popped up on the "suggested" video list from KZfaq. I could see in the video load up photo (whatever you call that) that you were holding your arms out straighter like I did the other day so I clicked on it. Interesting enough I am playing a Champions Tour Pro-am next Wednesday at the Country Club of Richmond, VA so I am hoping this change will help my ball striking a bit. Thanks again!

I completely agree chipping and putting are extremely important to score, but I need to get the ball there in the shortest number of strokes to get the benefit of great chipping and putting. As a true, untrained amateur that some of my friends ask for advice, simplification is the key. I am going to train in this model because so far, I see one set up for each type of tee or fairway shot regardless of the club, instead of one setup and swing for driver, a different one for woods, then another for irons and a fourth for chipping or pitching…gets confusing. In the last year I went from a 36 handicap to a 20 with trying to simplify and working on my short game (I need more work on putting). I think what is keeping me from being a scratch golfer are a couple of things. First I need a simple model to get the ball to the green, next I need structure in putting drills and to learn green reading better, finally I need to practice more. At 57, playing 5 or 6 rounds of golf for 10 years before this last one, I think I can become a scratch golfer. Will let you know.

Hit the ball 90 degrees from your set up. If you let your arms drop to start the downswing, it naturally shallows the path if you are now rotating. Your arms being connected, makes the club head move straight towards the ball. No miss. Ever. But only if you can learn to do one thing. That is that when you get to the top the first move needs to START by letting your arms drop using GRAVITY. As soon as you did that, the path is set instantaneously. Now because your arms are dropping because you are bent over, the arms starts to move away from your body as you rotate. You don't do it, the fact that you rotate around a spine that is tilted forward means the arms will naturally fall away as you rotate back towards the front. As soon as the shaft gets to level with the ground, if you follow the path that the club is now moving along, you can turn and fire if you want. I have to say though that gravity accelerates at 32 feet per second per second. It is as constant as it gets. Learn to use it and you gain consistency. That gravity start and the arc movement of the club head in a lag position caused by the gravity lead, create a huge amount of acceleration if you stay out of it and don't try to help it. It is universal physics. You are using a two lever movement. When length of movement reaches its limit, the rule of the two lever system is, the trailing lever must catch up. It is a universal physical law that is provides pure acceleration. I could add some snap to my shots, but I find that to be a timing element I don't in my swing. I choose to club up or down instead of varying speed on full shots. I just usually hit it straight and I trust that. The key to straight is a good grip and launching the ball on the intended line. (90* from set up being standard but not written in stone.) That line can be moved about if you need it to create curvature, but if you're in the fairway, no need to unless a tree is in the way. Just hit it where you know it will land... 90* from your set-up. My experience is that no matter what finesse shot I am attempting, the swing path is always along the foot line. That natural initial drop sets that path along the foot line naturally. When you open a wedge to engage the bounce, you still swing along your foot line. You change the ball position in the stance to accommodate the desired results but never the path along the foot line. When you don't swing along that line, then you have to steer the shot and you're only bringing miss hits into the mix. What if you're off 3 degrees to one side or the other? That is not consistent enough to attack a golf course. I just allow a gravity to start the club-path on 100% of my shots. I am a 3.4 capper but I don't practice often anymore. When I work a bit on the green-side short game, I have gotten down to a 2. When you hit from the fairway, it gives you an edge over people hitting through trees and out of 8 inch rough. Others are trying to hit recovery shots, you're playing clean lies from the fairways into the greens. The game gets a lot easier. I have shot a 63 once. Went out in 29. I didn't like the heart rate beating so fast from the adrenaline. Not cool. It would take a huge amount of work to even get that under a little bit of control I think. It scared the bejesus out of me. I'm good... I don't need to find scratch anymore. I'll leave that for others.

This is great Todd! I love your philosophy of the teacher, demonstrating over and over again the thoughts, feelings, and mechanics of the swing! I learn best through observation and mimicry. I know that sounds trite, but I know you understand that. My brother and I are totally into you and your videos. Thank you!!!😊

Thanks so much for sharing. I love the part about shaping shots. I play with guys all the time that hit a good but maybe not perfect drive in the fairway. Then they complain "where's my draw, where's my draw today".It so good to hear you say "I just want to always hit it straight. So simple.

I have been watching all your video’s for a year now, bought your book, videos, alignment board and recently bought the single plane trainer. Iam sold on your SPS. It’s a process to hit all 0-6 positions to set up too finish. There no other feeling when you hit it solid. My back is great now, I can hit balls for hours. Now it time put all together in 2022 golf season! Thanks Todd for your dedication to our sport.

I loved watching this video. So entertaining yet very informational. I can’t wait to get my back fixed to where I can start to learn this. I watched you hit every ball and not one was mis hit or shanked or duffed which to me shows once you get the swing in correct sequence you can’t or won’t miss hit! Thank you

I wish I had come across your videos much earlier than March 2020. That's really the best advice I have seen on a golf video and it makes so much sense - many thanks Todd for your excellent delivery. Unfortunately most of us are in "Lockdown" so it might be a while until I can put your advice into practice.

Genuinely incredible. I read about Moe Norman a year ago when I was watching videos on ‘Count Yogi’ also arguably the greatest golfer of all time. I didn’t do any research in to Moe until recently. And it’s just incredible. I’ve only been playing 2 years and have gotten my handicap to 9. I shot 2 over in the club comp a few weekends back, and felt like I played as good as I could. So I’ve been trying to figure out how to improve my swing the “standard” way and it’s just fallen to pieces. I can’t fathom how to hit a ball anymore. Watching Moe Norman videos has inspired me to really try and play it in this manor. I just have no idea where to start 🙈

Huge thanks for offering this content for free (could have easily sold this as a DVD etc, actually it's better than most I've seen), whether you want to follow this or not it's excellent content and worth a watch for any golfer IMO. A nice change from the "miracle cure", "magic move" type videos that others post.

BRILLIANT VIDEO and spoken and explained so low handicappers can relate too and it's not all about Jack Nicklaus etc.... I.M.O Moe Norman will always be down to earth and vastly more entertaining and honest.... he said what was in his head and not what people want to hear..... I've been a fan of MOE since i first stumbled on his videos and hooked ever since..... i've save this video and feel you are almost an incarnation of Moes game and will be watching this video over and over.... thanks for a thrilling visit Todd

I didn’t quite get the Moe swing before watching this, it now makes sense. Especially as when I was off 1. I remember my hands always swinging out towards the target and my divots were shallow but long. Had to take 15 years out from Golf due to a family crisis, just when I was playing my best Golf, hope I can get some of the same back again, I know fully I will have to work hard at it. Great Video

What an excellent, and well though out video! Obviously the most complete, and best explanation of Moe Norman's swing that exists. I hit a straight ball, and completely agree with your thoughts on why this is the best approach to playing golf. So much detail as to the different parts of this swing that was just plain valuable knowledge to have about the golf swing in general. Can't thank you enough for the time and effort you've spent in learning this swing, AND for sharing it with us.
