Sometimes I think it's so hard to get motivated to go out in the cold to check for lambs in the night or start morning chores when it's so cold out. But it's well worth it when you wake up to a newborn healthy lamb or lambs standing with their mom. Thanks again for the education, and great videos.

Thanks so much Brett! Wow, such kind words. I'm really just trying to share the journey... Coming into this industry with NO experience or knowledge was a real challenge. Getting people like me to stick with it and not give up is so critical to our industry. I guess thats my mission... to let people see that we all fail, but we learn, we make the changes, and we see small wins!

first i would like to thank You for sharing with your experience with us, some unreachable knowledge for many people who is about to jump in to your world. Then I thought automated technology would make your work easier, I know they are expensive if you buy em from the stock, but making the progress yourself for better, easier way to farm I believe is the beauty of farming. I learn from other people and watch them, then build it

Hey sandi, great thanks for your videos it really inspired me and i get alot of energy, strength, information from just watching you, more encouraged of course by each video i watch. Uuum if i may suggest few thing about lamping 1-if you only leave 2 lamp with mom and not more and better be females to yield better end Wight, body, mothering behaviour and ability, no harm if they needed mor time suckling cuzz its in your benefit both ways. 2-you can use the lamps to dry the mother just by taking one of the lamp befor one week, also give the mother some penicillin(it reduces the milk thats its side effects) for three days befor drying and inject some liquid iodine in the udder, this dryers the mother for sure and also prevent alot of mastitis, eather when you dry, or breed again ( thus, reduce culling) , or at the instant of lamping. 3-you might want to consider putting a (mineral - molasses mix ) blokes for the ewe that are expecting to help prevent lap of pregnancy tox. And to ease lamping by providing a balanced ca/p ratio especially you are feeding tmr. Ps:barley grain are very good at this stage and in flushing Boath male and female. I also have some advices about your reproduction ops. Tell me if you are looking to hear from me

Hi Sandi - I totally love your videos! Thank you so much for making them - I'm learning so much. I'm retiring in about 5 yrs. and am strongly considering starting a flock of sheep for extra income. My question for you is, what are the costs of raising a lamb to market? Everything I've seen on the internet in terms of numbers varies so widely, I don't know what to believe. I'm just wondering if it will be profitable enough for me as I'm looking to only have around 200 ewes. If you've already done a vlog on this subject, please let me know where I can find it as I haven't come across it yet. Thank you again and PLEASE keep vlogging!
@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 5 жыл бұрын
Great question! I sat down for a few days last month to go over these numbers, and will be doing a vlog in the new year on this. But, unfortunately, the internet is right. The costs do vary according to so many factors... Are you buying feed, growing your own, when do you wean, breed, daily gains, what weight for market, etc... Everyone's cost of production will look very different. My set up has a significant chunk tied up in barn mortgage, so my costs look much higher than most. Stay tuned!

So glad to hear you say you are prepared with a bottle for thin babes. I get so much grief for making a “new apple dumpling gang”. I seem to have a bunch every year which I know every other shepherd does. Do you give all new borns colostrum or wait and see if mom takes care of it? I have heard some tubing every lamb just in case which seems a ton of work especially with 100 lambs or more. How long do you wait?
@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 6 жыл бұрын
I don't give every lamb colostrum... only those ones who just look like they will take too long to get up and at it... Or if its really cold in the barn and baby is slow to get up. Or if I'm leaving for the night and haven't seen lamb drink, I will feed before I leave. As for feeding the thin babies... They go backwards SO FAST! And I hate knowing all I had to do was supplement...
@1jmass
@1jmass 3 жыл бұрын
I know it would involve a little more thought, but have you considered putting ewes with multiple lambs in the pens close to the feed troughs? This would help with space since food would not have to be in their pen. Those little families of 3,4, and maybe 5 little lambies need that little bit of extra room.

Hi Sandi.. Thank you for your wonderful videos.. What is your birth rate and mortality weight? You mentioned 2.5 for birth rate one. And what is your av birth weight? You mentioned 3.5 pounds for a new born with multiple babies once. What would be the weight after 100 or 120 days? Thank you.
@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 5 жыл бұрын
Birth rate is variable depending on if I have ewe lambs in a group... So my mature ewes typically average about 2.2 (ish) and the ewe lambs would be closer to 1.7 (ish). Birth weights in general for twins would be around 7-8 lbs each, and singles likely closer to 9-10 lbs.. again depending on the ewe delivering them. Multiples can be small if there are many, but 3.5 is about the smallest I've ever had that survived. Even quads are usually around 5 pounds plus. Most lambs are shipped at 105-115lbs by 5 months of age and as early as 3 months of age... whatever doesn't make that weight target gets shipped out anyway to clean out the barn for the next group.

@bluejfarm9098
@bluejfarm9098 6 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure... they are all running around the yard. So i felt like a bit of an ass asking this so i went out caught my ewes and rolled them over and sure enough i did not get them sheered and they were just woolly... Everybody's seems to be eating well and doing fine. But next year i will sheer prior to lambing for sure. FYI I really appreciate your videos. For someone new to the sport you really give great info without making us feel stupid. Well done. I subscribed and i suspect you will hear from me again. (sorry about that) We only have 6 Ewes and to Rams but it's fun... not nearly the operation you're running.

Did you ever consider, and this may be a real stretch, getting a couple of nanny goats that will produce a ton of milk and will let the extra lambs nurse? I know a person who lets her nanny goat have kids, sells them, them pops some lambs on her and she grows them fat and happy for her. Now I get that it's very outside the box but who knows 😉😉😉

Do you keep your ewes always in the same pen or do you rotate so lambing is always in same pen, dry ewes in same pen etc?
@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 6 жыл бұрын
Great question!! The ewes are always rotating depending on where they are in their lifecycle... I like to keep the side closest to the handling facility for the ewes that will be handled... ie., CIDR, breeding, hoof trimming, vaccinated... The other side of the barn is for the ewes that are confirmed pregnant, or lactating... I like to lamb always on the south side of the barn (closest to the utility room)

Hi, it's me again. I'm just going through all of your videos. lol Anyways, I have another question. You seem to have so many multiples (triples and quads!). Do you have an idea why that is? Is it because of the breed, the CIDR or any other management approach you use? I though that triplets were unusual, but quads? WOW!

@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 6 жыл бұрын
The ram lambs either go to our local salesbarn (Brussels Livestock), or sometimes I ship to my direct-to-packer group. I also get some lamb done for family and friends, as well as a store nearby who sells it. www.mccullys.ca/ Most of my ewe lambs I keep back for replacement stock.

If you don't mind me asking. What is the purpose of cropping the tail on the lamb?
@SandiBrock
