Today my new co-op student Marty and I are hoof trimming and vaccinating some rams, and my next group of ewes due to lamb end of next month. Music: / led-zeppelin-vs-rollin...

What a trip for the sheep being turned upside down to trim their feet and an injection! They don't really freak out either. Sheep are so cool. Tfs! 💜🙏🤗

I came across your channel recently enough that you have been using the electric trim shears for a while. I decided to go back to watch your 'origin' episodes so I'm working my way through them. It's strange to see you with the manual trimmers in this vlog from years ago now! 😊

Having a good system like that is vital, it means you can do many more sheep without getting tired and compromising your efforts. Really 👍

Found your videos a week ago and I am binged watching them (started with this years and now I am back at the beginning to catch up) Love your videos so much, I was even able to get a couple of ideas. You are awesome!! We have to keep buying new trimmers since my husband keeps breaking them...it's a pain.

Just a suggestion: the sheep want to trust their footing, so if you line the base of turn table with non slip layer of grip tape or the like, they would not be as reluctant to step in.

What a nifty machine! We keep goats, but we don't have nearly as many animals as you do, so we don't have one. It would be nice -- we sure get tired of wrestling for their feet...

Hey Jonathan! I have a distributer who lives really close who sells this line of equipment. His name is Andrew and his contact info is zuid-agri@quadro.net . Depending on where you're located, he did say sometimes shipping costs deter many sales to the US.

There's a hoof trimmer on KZfaq the "hoof trimmer gp" that uses a electric unit and a battery powered .... I call it an angle grinder with cutter heads ? On cows , Check it out sometime I think a similar device would work for you and perhaps stop you developing carpel tunnel from doing it your way .

Hi Sandi. Sure felt like a lot of work. I used to trim feet as a requirement to send them out to clear-cut grazing. But for the last 20 years I have not done so. No foot problems whatsoever. Are we sure we need to trim feet at all? Probably depends on breed and management but... We used pneumatic hoof trimmers: Loved them. Do you want them? A bit scary at first, but that makes one extra careful, since I love having 10 fingers almost as much as the sheep love their feet.
@SandiBrock5 жыл бұрын
LOL! Thats why I still don't own a set of pneumatic hoof trimmers... I am the world's biggest klutz! I would for sure lose a finger! LOL. As for the hoof trimming... that is the one downfall of having the ewes on a pack year round. They need to be outside to wear down those hooves in theory. So for the health of the ewe, I am forced to trim at least once a year. They get pretty long otherwise.
@arvokoppel89135 жыл бұрын
Rats.. I was hoping I could pay back for your wonderful series with the donated hoof trimmers. I am surprised to hear that concrete (with bedding) wears down hoofs less than clay soils do. Maybe its the moisture outside that softens hoofs up. But we do what we gotta do, and I for one, am now done coffee, and its back to the lambing barn to check for little surprises. It's finally above freezing!!! Please keep up the series. It is wonderful to reminisce back to our trials in earlier years. The sheep had been good for our family, even when they were $67/cwt.

Isn't it bad to put sheep upside down for the chance they choke? I had people tell me not to put my goats upside down cause they choke...is it different with the two species?
@jhutch168110 ай бұрын
Let me preface my question by saying that I am not a farmer and everything I know about sheep I learned from you, Sandi. Why do you trim the ewe's feet when they are heavily pregnant? Could they not be done on a different schedule - say, prior to mating, and have their vaccines when they are being shorn? I am trying to imagine my own (non-sheep) pregnant self getting squeezed and flipped, and I think it would be uncomfortable at best. Who is your helper? A co-op student? Lucky to be able to work with you!

@randy1ization6 жыл бұрын
its a coarse flat file, kind of like a grater.
@abbystevens56936 жыл бұрын
Yes it can be There are special rasps for small cattle and for large cattle like horses and cows,mules.
@crenaud5905 жыл бұрын
No, those are for horse feet, that are much, much harder like very thick toenails. The sheep feet are like rubber that curls under the foot, which is why we need to use clippers to cut them. They have to be VERY SHARP!

It’s so unnecessary to put an animal entirely upside down. So sad the treatment these animals receive...There’s alternate methods, which obviously require more work so it won’t be utilized. Before people discredit my comment I have a bachelors in animal science and worked on farms my entire school career. There are different methods-ones that are less stressful on your flock. And I’d like to keep stress low in my flock since we do know that’s a MAJOR cause of disease.
@wendyrowland77873 жыл бұрын
You are so right. I found turning crates more trouble than they are worth. At least the second hand market is good. I used to halter the rams and lift their feet, they soon learned to co operate . Turning up ewes the traditional way was less effort than pushing over the crate. The Ritchie Combi Clamp is a really good innovation. It just squeezes the sheep and you can drench, crutch and foot trim, I would like to have had one. Not sure that doing a dirty and clean procedure at the same time is a good idea though.
