This is my journey while finishing my first ever LIVE EDGE table.
This thing was a beast.
I bought this solid slab of Acacia wood at a GREAT price due to the fact that it came unfinished. So, I researched the best way to stabilize, prep, sand and finish this 4 inch thick, 8 foot long, 350 pound dining table. It took a few weeks to complete, in and around many other reno projects, and in a garage that isn't anywhere CLOSE to setup as a shop! But it's done now, and my family of 5 and I LOVE it in our dining room!

Looks awesome! I’ve made a few coffee tables like this. Never one that big nor did I have the courage to attempt bow ties. Awesomely done 👍🏼🇺🇸

6:20 premix the glue and saw dust to make sure you get the consistency you want. You can also use a little epoxy and saw dust, it'll flow in more evenly into the cracks.

I purchased an acacia live edge table from crate and barrel and although it's nice, it's nothing like this. Amazing work.

Thanks! More labour intensive than Crate a Barrel, or any other purchase, but memories made in eating around something I built is well worth it!

Awesome video! How is the oil holding up at the end ? Why did you choose that option rather than a epoxy or similar product?

Thanks for checking this out! The oil has been EXACTLY what I was hoping for! Epoxy was too shiny for me personally- I wanted coverage and protection, but not a gloss finish look. I haven't had to re apply at all so far! Loving the choice. I think for my next project (coffee table) I may Epoxy a river table, but Danish Oil was perfect for our eating surface.

Great video! I'm actually following all of your steps to make a desk for our home office! I had a question with the UV ecopoxy, did you wait 48 hrs to sand it down or can you sand it down within a 4 to 8 hr window? Thanks in advance for your response! And great work on that table it looks awesome!

dorozco619 Thanks for the comment! To be honest, I cheated on the 48hrs... but I did wait a full 24hrs before I started planing and sanding down. Didn't pose an issue (for me at least). Happy building!

Thanks for checking this out! I used 3" lag bolts. I pre drilled the holes slightly thinner than the bolts, and then just threaded the bolts into the holes with ratchets.

Great work & awesome table! I was searching for the videos to learn tips and tricks to make live edge table for my family. Question! Is there reason you choose to go with Danish oil instead of staining or urethane coating? I'm planning to start the work next month - still looking for the right slab. Thanks.

Thanks for the question! I chose Danish Oil for a couple reasons... Danish Oil is food safe, as it is a dining table. Past that, it soaks deep into the wood, and with 3 kids with forks and knives there's bound to be knicks, scratches and gouges. If it's too deep, I can simply reapply the Oil, but the oil soaks in about 3/4". Didn't use stain cause I wanted the colour to be true. And didn't use urethane for the marking reasons- any mark on the table, I'd have to sand down the area to reapplying. Not wanting to do that.

Jonathan Robson - glad you like the vid and the table! Got the chairs through Wayfair. Had a GREAT deal when bought them- $40 a chair!!! Haven't seen a deal like that in a while, so I scooped up 8! They also come in multi colours.

JAMES STRICKLAND thanks man! Ummm- all in all, about 3 weeks to finish. But that wasn't full attention on it, as I was doing the rest of our reno. So ya, intermittent, 3 weeks. It was so fun!

I got the legs from the same place I purchased the slab of Acacia wood... I just had to spray them black. The height of the legs were predetermined - my only concern is whether the 4" tabletop would put the height over average. Average tabletops are 29"-31". Mine sits at 31", so it's working great for us!

Joe Resek I used 3" long lag bolts, knowing I had a 4.25" thick table. Just pre-drilled the holes smaller than the bolt width is all.

vfighter bought it off a guy who finished and sells tables- though he couldn't finish this one himself. In Markham, where I live. Slab was from Indonesia though. Looks beautiful!

stateamind29 Slab unfinished was $1300. Given I could buy a 1"x6' finished table for $4000+... a 4"x8' table at that price was a STEAL!

John Proffitt the guy that sold me the slab actually just threw them in for me! I asked what to do about legs, and he said "ah, just take those"! Just had to clean them up and install them!

Did you epoxy from the bottom or the top? Also did you have put bow ties in on both sides or only the top?

Jeremy - I taped the bottom, and epoxied the top. I bow tied on both sides- so the bow ties are the strength/support, and the epoxy is the filler for food and spills. For strength, you technically only need to do bows OR epoxy. I chose both for function and aesthetic.

Nope! Just used regular Lepage Carpenter's glue.

Nice job! Stop using gloves with machinery of any kind man. Those gloves will pull you right in and in one second you have just lost three digits! 40+ years, seen it all. Looks good, enjoy your table, safety first.

Get oowt witcha bad self!! Nice work. Love that it was a family project too. What a beautiful piece. I know you must've been sweating cutting into that for the bowties, but you did a great job. Appreciate the pro-tips too. Since you're not selling it, do you mind telling how much that acacia slab was? I'm in NC where the hard woods are aplenty. Working on 4 tables at the moment. Special Ed Haha- glad you liked the process vid! Had a blast. Truly. And nope- pretty confident in my cuts for the bowties! Once I research and know it's the right thing, next step is DO IT, as long as it's done right. Got the piece of wood for $1300. Came kiln dried and has end posts installed so it wouldn't cup. I took it the rest of the way!
