Finding my living room are rug has been… quite a journey. One filled with puzzles and side quests I didn’t see coming. 🙃 Simply put, choosing an area rug to go with living room decor has been harder than I thought it would be!
So in this video, I’m talking through my epic tale of finding an area rug and giving you my tips based on my experience. Maybe after hearing my rug-related trials and tribulations, you’ll walk away with some living room area rug ideas that will help you find the right rug for your space!

I am on the same rug journey so this was perfect timing. I feel inspired. I like the muted hue of the rug you landed on. very sexy rug...lol . I think it will work well with your beautiful wall paper and that great couch! I can't wait to see it! I wonder if your pillows will need to change once that is up. I would love to see some more soothing patterns of pillows... IDK ? I can't wait to see what you do ... thanks for sharing.

I have a lot of Persian rugs that I bought ~20 years ago when there was a big glut (as trade with Iran had reopened) and they were dirt cheap. They come in two groups: the blue and cream Nains which do have other colors, but are pretty calm and soothing; and the crazy ones with multiple jewel tones that scream, “I am a rug; look at me.” Generally, I base everything else on the rug I’m planning to use in the room because you can’t go the other way. The Nains don’t go on the floor because of dogs. The bright rugs are substantially less valuable than the others, so they do, but, again… using them in conjunction with dogs is hard. Is a dog feeling unwell? Always best to throw up on the rug. Sudden diarrhea? Head for the rug. I assume cats are similar, though at least they contain less volume of rug-staining substances. Anyhow, generally rugs end up on the wall, which is a lesson in owning pets and rugs.

Best advice I’ve heard for buying a rug is to order a runner size of the pattern you’re considering. That way you can see how it looks with your lighting, furniture, etc w/on the cost of a larger one. I’m moving soon and will be using this advice since nothing looks the same online or in store lighting.

I think once you move the black and white flower prints behind your couch and put up the wallpaper, matching a rug will be easier. Also, have you tried getting curtains to filter some of your living room light?

I agree. The curtains will filter some light, making the light less harsh and protecting furniture at the same time.

I find buying an area rug for my living room is one of the hardest things to do! Getting the right size, the right texture (important, because McKitty is a serial rug-ripper) colours that will blend with my decor - and all at a price I can afford = total headache!

With those huge glass windows you are getting a big dose of natural daylight, which tends to be on the cooler color temperature side, about 3,500 to 5,000 kelvins, which tends to be on the blue spectrum, which in turn tends to give cool colors a totally different cast or brings out the hidden cool undertones in an item, more than what warmer lighting would give . In your other apartment, seems like the lighting what a little warmer naturally, which showed you the real color without bringing out the bluer undertones. And charcoal does have blue undertones that show sometimes depending on lighting.

Current living room rug is orange, pink, cream, and blue grey in an allover pattern (no boarder). I was looking for colourful, as I live in Vancouver 🇨🇦, I walked into Homesense and bought it immediately 😹 My new place and old place both face the same direction, so no colour changes took me by surprise, and wow if you hadn't said that was your old rug I would have assumed it was new - such a difference in colour‼

I’ve been shlepping a Tiffany poster, framed, from move to move, for the past 40+ years. “Magnolias and Irises”, with blues, lilacs, pinks, leaf green. So I found the perfect rug, a vintage style with all the colours. It’s gorgeous.

Have you thought about getting a dark brown instead of a charcoal? That way when the blue light hits it, it will look more neutral.

Something to consider😉I just had new windows throughout my home in Arizona and while choosing the windows & sun reflectiveness the sales person told me the tint used in windows (in Az anyhow) has a slightly blue hue from the street. The darker the tint, which is the solar reflective part, the bluer the windows will look from the outside! I believe there is also a very slight blue “hue” on the inside as well!! Just food for thought! You have large windows in what appears to be a fairly new building therefore the windows very likely have some type of solar/heat/weather type of coating? I now have sheers and don’t notice the blue😉😂😂😂😂

Chaos vs. Cohesion. I lived the expression on your face when speaking od the BIG rug. My furniture was dark brown, so I Googled " rug colors that go with a brown sofa." I chose a marled blue rug with some apricot and cream tones in it and used accent pieces in corresponding colors.

my rug... is an outdoor rug because it was cheaper. it's like geometric stripes, with lots of white in it and bright colors like orange, yellow, deep turquoise:) it was on sale from simons. it looks great, and covers the old carpet, but the material is a little annoying

If your apt faces north, your light has blue of cloudy light and not the colors of south or west light with warm sun color in it, even on a cloudy day. It's very subtle but it's a thing.

Yes, I commented something similar to yours and I agree that the position of the room in the house affects the temperature color of the light that comes in.

I almost never use rugs (except at the front door for wet paws) because hardwood floors are way sexy!! I also feel small spaces look larger without rugs. And that's a lovely rug, but definitely reading as navy to me, sorry! I think you're right about the light. But navy and gold look great together.

Choosing rugs (and wall art) completely paralyzes me so I usually go without. I did recently buy a cool washable rug though and it changed the entire look of my living room. Like completely up leveled my life. lol. Now I’m obsessed with finding a rug for my bedroom and a runner for the kitchen! Who even am I right now? 😂.

love a good sexy rug video! i bought some big plush bold zebra print rugs that looked great in our last apt w tile floors, but now we have a semi plush carpet flooring so my amazing rugs are happily in the bedrooms where the extra plush feel is appreciated. still need to figure out a living room rug. your new rug looks great, it looks like hilo approves too!

I will note that there are multiple blacks, as nothing is ever pure black. Most things that read as black are either blue-black or green-black, and these actually clash.

Hi steffi and Hilo, I really like all the rugs but, I i especially liked the bold print, true black, big beautiful rug. Add a few pieces of turquoise,deep turquoise, and it'll break all the black and white pattern. I'm a Abigail Ahern kinda gal, I also love dark moody jewel tones.

I always start with the worst reviews. Then go up from there…maybe. Electrical problems, shedding, only worked for a week, parts don’t match…all red flags.
