what I don't get is how they all share the food and take bites out of someone else's sandwich? Usually you only share food like that with someone very close to you? So was the food spoiled or did it just taste bad?

It's pretty common in Asian cultures to share food, besides these people are his staff and managers whom he is working closely with and there is a level of comfort. The food in question is Wasabi (the green stuff normally used in Sushi) filled sandwich, and it tastes horrible to some people.
